Search crews and cupertino volunteers are out looking for 17yearold conor sullivan. They say theyve covered about half the city so far. The teen was seen monday at high school. The Sheriffs Office has no evidence of foul play but are still suspicious of his disappearance. Its suspicious because its out of his character. He wakes up goes to school, practices sports and then comes home right away. New at 5 00 this could have been much worse. The giant tree about five stories tall fell over today, crashing into that garage down below. This happened in san jose on ninth street north of downtown. A fence and that garage were flattened. Thankfully no injuries. No word yet on what caused this locust tree to fall. An emotional tribute to a fallen firefighter, Jose Martinez died of cancer three years ago, and today his name was added to those who died in the line of duty. Damian has the story where martinez name will appear forever. Reporter thats right. There are 50 names on this wall of honor outside of fire station 1 in san jose. The last four names on this wall are firefighters who died of what the department calls occupational cancer. They run into burning and smokefilled buildings to save lives and homes. But in the process, they end up breathing in all the fire and smoke theyre trained to keep away from us. [ bagpipes ] reporter Jose Martinez was one of those firefighters, he died in 2012 of cancer. Today the Department Recognized the role his job played in his death. His family was presented with the same honors given to a firefighter who dies in the line of duty. I am just beyond words, excited, and grateful for them remembering him. Reporter his 11yearold son put the name plate on the wall for fallen firefighters. As firefighters, were not robots. Reporter friends say every time they run into a burning home, they know they may not make it out alive. But theres other hidden dangers, lurking in the smokefilled fire fights. Firefighters have a highrisk of cancer and we know a lot of it has to do directly with the occupation that we chose. Its a way of proactively replacing pipe before it burst. Right now the San FranciscoPublic UtilitiesCommission Says they pay 40 million a year to replace about 15 miles of pipe. But water officials all over the bay area admit theyre not replacing this pipe fast enough to keep up. How many miles a year would you like to be doing to try to keep up and maybe get ahead of this curve . We feel 15 miles is the sweet spot for right now. This is because its sustainable. Its doable. Today a judge ordered him to surrender his drivers license and check in with a probation officer weekly until his case is resolved. A local Animal Shelter is being called unsafe and outdated. A bizarre scene here. Mountain view was sharing the cost for this facility but when they built their own palo alto said it struggled to keep the doors open. Employees at the palo alto Animal Shelter care for dogs like sammy every day. They also work very closely with fluffy, a snake that lives in an office in the shelter because theres nowhere else to put it. The employee break room is also home to two birds. Staff at the shelter werent allowed to speak on camera, but say the audit didnt come as a surprise. The independent report says the facilities are outdated and inadequate. The city has not successfully completed projects to renew the shelter over the years. It also points out the shelter is losing nearly 900,000 a year. The council had identified wanting to meet some sort of Cost Recovery goals in operating the shelter. Unfortunately, weve not only been unable to meet those, weve actually gone in the wrong direction. Reporter the city plans to transition the shelter from city control to a nonprofit organization. Reporter one of many things heidi has done, the Mini Mermaids Running Club started six years ago after talking with a friend about the limited options for fitness programs for young girls. Since then more than 4,000 girls have gone through the program. Six weeks of raising heart rates and selfesteem, all leading up to the girls running a 5k road race. Each one, heidi hopes, getting out of that race what she did hers. If we could give that feeling to that one person what would it do . Reporter which brings us back to this run. Heidi is doing it to promote mini mermaids, even though shes now battling that cancer for a second time. Just another challenge, it would seem for a woman who hasnt yet met one she couldnt finish.
