Congressman swalwell examined the perimeter of San Jose National airport and is calling for tighter security, not just there but at all of our nations airports. Marianne favro joins us from the stowaways home in santa clair wa with the hightech tools the congressman thinks could have blocked the teen from sneaking onto that plane. Reporter janelle, the councilman thinks perhaps motion sensors on the perimeter fence at San Jose International airport would have helped in this situation. Also, he believes that some kind of hightechnology that would alert pilots whenever theres additional weight in a wheel well would have helped in this incident. Bottom line is he says while the airport is meeting federal standards, those standards are simply not high enough. What went wrong here is that tsa standards i dont think are Strong Enough to protect vast amounts of airport crime. I think bottom line, we dont have enough information about what is coming across these perimeters to alert people as soon as possible. Reporter thats the assessment from bay area congressman eric swawell today after touring minett that San Jose International airport. He inspected some fence line and scheduled the tour after a 15yearold santa clara boy scaled the fence here last month, climbed into a wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines flight, and miraculously survived a 5 1 2 hour flight to maui. The councilman said the airport did not catch the boy scaling an airport fence on surveillance video. Passengers are stunned. Youd expect this to be cameras everywhere. Theyre all inside the airport, why shouldnt they be on the outside . Reporter the congressman said Airport Security told him theyre adding additional surveillance cameras. Hes asking that San Jose International be part of a Pilot Program hes proposing to beef up security technology, adding motion sensors and radar. Spokeswoman barnes tells us the airport has added additional cameras but wont tell us how many. Over in the east bay, an unusual find during a routine screening at the Oakland Airport today. Tsa agents discovered 81 pounds of marijuana in two checked bags. They say the bags belonged to a 26yearold woman flying to jackson, mississippi. The Alameda CountySheriffs Office confiscated the pot and arrested the passenger. A followup on the stabbing death of a san jose mother. Gabriel alejo is accused of the brutal killing, arrested wednesday, one day after teresa maravia was found dead. Police say they knew her but didnt reveal the relationship. The woman was found dead in her apartment on jose figeures avenue. She was the mother of a newborn baby and twin girls. This is san joses 13th homicide of the year, compared to four in San Francisco, 29 in oakland. Hawaii authorities are trying to figure out how a bay area Woman Working at a zip line company fell to her death. Patricia robelisa moved to maui months ago. These are facebook photos from her wall. She was working at p. E. Hollow ranch zip line yesterday when she fell 150 feet. Her death is resurrecting calls for regulation of the zip line industry. New details to share with you now on that fire in San Francisco that burned four houses this morning. Neighbors woke up to screaming, smoke, and flames. It happened in the oceanside area. Brent walker and his son jordan rent rooms in that house where the fire began. They were also the first ones out. As soon as i cracked the door, the fire was right here. Four feet in front of me. Reporter brent walker opened the door to his bedroom and yelled for his son to get out. All i hear is a scream and i hear get out of the house, theres a fire. The mattress was blazing, the ceiling was ignited. Reporter walker and his son jordan ran out of the house, yelled for someone to call the fire department, and then brent walker ran back in with the neighbors fire extinguisher. Ran in, start spraying. Theyre screaming in the back, they were still in the building. Reporter he exhausted one extinguisher, got another, ran back into the Burning House a second time. Walker told me it looked like a scene from a movie. The fire rolling, rolling from the ceiling up. I cant see my dad. Im trying to get him. Hes trying to save somebody since he was in military, trying to be a hero. Reporter in all walker helped six people out of the house. The homes owner mark gardner suffered seconddegree burns on his neck and ear. A friend Cynthia Vance was treated for smoke inhalation. Both of them are out of the hospital this afternoon. The red cross helping residents of all four houses find a place to jimmy broom had lived in his house 35 years. Everything in there is gone. Reporter weve heard all kinds of things about what started the fire. Brent walker thinks it was a mattress fire caused by his roommate. His son thinks it was a discarded cigarette from the same housemate. Fire investigators are looking into it. So far, no cause determined. Essentially workers will have to pay to drive on city streets. The more congested, the higher the price, for streets like shoreli shoreline. The traffic is bad now in Mountain View. Wait until google and other companies expand up to 3. 4 million square feet of new office space in North Bayshore park over the next few years. Bringing in as many as 20,000 new workers. Among the plans to ease potential traffic is congestion pricing. San antonio, rangestorff, and shoreline would essentially become toll roads. This plan would affect city roads. The idea is to get people out of their cars. If we really want to change behavior, weve seen that pricing, it doesnt have to be sky high, but just some little amount really does change behavior pretty significantly. Proposing something, a pricing scheme that is really authoritarian mandate. Reporter the city councilman thinks its a bad idea because Companies May choose other cities instead and take those jobs with them. Its but the question i think in some businesses minds, do we want to go where there are toll roads our employees are going to have to pay . Theres a Public Relations image there. Reporter campaign for a balanced Mountain View thinks putting housing in North Bayshore park and reducing employment growth are the answers to reducing traffic. The city is calling it a slalom course. Were talking about downtown palo alto. But not the traffic on the road, its the traffic on the sidewalk that has the citys attention. Reporter were talking about university avenue, the main stretch here in downtown, where tables are very popular. But the city says they can turn into a liability. Were always busy. Every day, its very its a challenge. Reporter a challenge to cater to every customer. Orens shop on university, there used to be more seating available. When you have the nice weather, why not enjoy it . Definitely missing out on those tables. Reporter she got ride of four tables after the city approached downtown businesses, telling them to have eight feet of clear space from the curb, five feet with a special permit. The city says its gotten complaints about sidewalk accessibility downtown. But they peaked last fall. We want the experience downtown to be absolutely perfect, absolutely the best. When youve got an obstacle course, thats hard to achieve. Reporter russ cohen heads the Downtown Association here. He adds there are also liability issues. For example, if a car were to go up onto the curb and hit a pedestrian or someone eating at a restaurant and they didnt have enprovoment permit, the insurance policy would not cover them. I would say the hardest thing for us since then is really when you walk down a lot of university, youll see that theres a lot of restaurants that arent upholding that ordinance. Where we are.
