The game plan is pretty straightforward, to have this Building Collapse literally inwards as opposed to outwards as it threatens other apartment and offices. Preliminary reports say that a welding machine may have been the cause of that fire. Now, as you can see behind me, there is a huge crane there. It stopped working right now, but what it did is pushed part of the building in, and then theres another machine going on the other side, and they are going to do the same on the other side. The water is not here right now. They stopped pouring it on there because they need to know just where the fire is burning. At 3 45 this afternoon, construction crews started dismantling the burned out building as smoke started spewing into the air. Its now been 24 hours and the fire is still burning. Its such a hazard right now because, you know, the building is leaning in several places so this is a collapse zone. Reporter result of a fivealarm fire that burned down this 172unit Apartment Building that was under construction. At height of the fire flames started shooting hundreds of feet into the air. The rating was pretty bad. Kind of retreated back to that occupied building, the strata, which was fully constructed and occupied, and the radiant heat started to pop the windows. Reporter fire investigators say the massive blaze had the potential to burn down the entire block and was likely started by an accident. Its our understanding that there was some welding taking place yesterday in the area that the fire originated. Reporter investigators believe the fire started on the eighth or ninth floor of the building. Fire chief Joanne Hayes White and mayor ed lee got a closer look at the gutted building this morning. As you can see, theres lots of other properties around. Were very fortunate that it wasnt as windy last night as were experiencing this morning. That might have made a huge difference. The mayor also credits another thing for keeping the flames from spreading. But for that High Pressure water system, this fire would have been perhaps very hard to conta contain. What do you feel when somebody points a gun in your head . Reporter on monday the woman says she agreed to meet a man who was selling iphones on craigslist. She took no money with her to prevent a possible robbery but still found herself staring down the barrel of a gun. Police say two men kidnapped her and took her to a local bank to withdraw cash. When that failed, they brought her back to target. They told her to get on the phone and call somebody and provide some money. The robbers ultimately got their money and let the victim go. You know, they have guns. What can i do . They still try to do something. Like many crimes, robberies are on the rise in san jose. Robberies jumped to 1,907 in 2013, compared to 1,208 the year before. Police say they are doing all they can but admit they are swamped. Today Supreme Court Justice Anthony kennedy denied an emergency request from the nra to block sunnyvales new ordinance t. Bans all largecapacity magazines. This made national headlines. Fire fighters are digging through the rubble of two buildings that clps after a deadly gas explosion. They are searching for more than a dod people who remain missing. So far three people are dead. A smouldering pile of brig and metal is all thats left of two apartment build National East harlem. They flew out when the blast hit, and it knocked everybody into the debris. People say they felt the blast from a mile away. I heard boom, and high windows rattled. I ran out the apartment because it sounded much closer than it was. Never seen anything like that or heard or felt anything like that before. The explosion happened around 9 30 this morning east coast time. It scattered debris into the street and on to nearby buildings. The only warning anyone had was from someone in the building next door. That person called the Utility Company before the blast. From what we know now, the only indication of danger came about 15 minutes earlier when a gas leak was reported to con edison. It was too late. Crews didnt arrive until moments after the buildings exploded. One tentant said neighbors complained repeatedly in recent weeks about, quote, unbearable smells of gas. The most recent complaint was made just yesterday but the gas company in manhattan says they didnt get any reports of problem until today. New developments on that missing malaysian airliner.
