months. it is almost too much to comprehend. new details emerging tonight about the death of a 3-year-old napa girl. police now say that the girl's mother and boyfriend told officers that they, themselves, put the little girl's body in a suitcase and than freezer before police eventually discovered her. innocence bay area's jodi hernandez is live in napa where the suspects made their first court appearance late this afternoon. jodi? >> reporter: jessica, the courtroom here was packed today with little caylee's friend he is and family. in fact, there was not an empty seat. things also got quite emotional as sickening new details became public. with lips quivering, a visibly distraught sarah krueger appeared in court this afternoon, where she was formally charged with murder and assault for the killing of her 3-year-old daughter, caylee. krueger's boyfriend, ryan warner, looked straight ahead, showing no emotion, as he, too, heard the charges. >> based on the evidence that we have in front of us at this point in time, these are the charges which we believe the evidence will support. >> reporter: tonight, shocking new details are emerging about the case. according to court documents, the pair told police they stored the 3-year-old girl in a suitcase and then a freezer for three days before police found her beaten body. >> through the conversations with both the parties, there was indication that that child had been placed into a freezer or into a suitcase at some point this time after her demise. >> reporter: napa police captain said officers responded to the apartment last wednesday after someone concerned about the girl's well being asked them to conduct a welfare check. >> they did check the welfare of the child, found the home to be in a livable condition and there was nothing to indicate the child was not being taken care of or fed. >> reporter: if their statements to police are true, caylee died that very same day. police and prosecutors say they are determined to unravel what happened and get justice. >> and there's nothing any of us can do in our job and certainly in my job to bring caylee back to the people that she loved and that's why i said it's about justice and accountability. >> reporter: now, krueger and warner did not enter pleas today. they will be back in court on february 25th to do that. and while they have been charged with murder and assault, the prosecutor says that more charges could be coming. the pathologist apparently is still trying to determine whether a sexual assault also took place on the girl. if it did, the district attorney says this could be a possible capital death penalty case. reporting live in napa, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. new at 5:00, an intense afternoon in a san francisco neighborhood. a driver tried to ram a police officer with a stolen car. it started around noon in petrero hill. officers cornered the suspect, and that's when police say he tried to ram a patrol car. the officer inside fired several shots. now, it's not clear if the suspect was hit. the driver then abandoned the car several blocks away and got away. police fanned out across the neighborhood. four schools were put into lockdown. now, that lockdown has since been lifted but the suspect is still on the run. also in the city, smoke could be seen for miles. take a look. after two homes caught fire. this was in the exclusive presidio heights neighborhood of san francisco near the intersection of walnut and clay street. our nbc chopper on the scene around 1:30 this afternoon. crews were able to knock down this fire within about an hour. no word yet on how this fire started. okay. get ready for another change in the weather. you're looking live over san jose skies, where they are cloudy and rain is on the way. nbc bay area's chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri, tracking the storm. wither back to win thor. >> finally, after not having too much winter here the past month or so live radar right now does show those dry conditions, but it's going to be all about this strong southerly push of moisture out in the passivic. that's what's going to be responsible for amping up two particular storm systems as we head throughout the next six days. in fact, rain chances over each and every day in that next six days. so let's go ahead and get you to the latest on these storm systems. some of the data right now showing us the best possibility of some rain moving in wednesday night, also into thursday. by this weekend, a second and stronger storm is likely, but what you do want to know, like every other storm in the past this year, there is high model disagreement, every forecast model is showing a different scenario at this point, but just do know we have a chance of rainfall over the next six days for the entire bay area. we will fine tune the details on this coming up. one thing that is great news, san jose this past sun say 800th inch of rainfall. the next hours, the rain totals will be higher, up to quarter inch for san jose. details coming up. >> thank you. san jose police asking for the public's help in finding men responsible for a string of armed robberies. this is surveillance video of actually one of the suspected gunmen. it took place back on october 27th. they say at least three men carjacked and pistol whipped the driver of a black cadillac escalade and the driver of another car as well. they use those cars to commit several more armed robberies of people on the street. anyone who recognizes this man is asked to call the police department. a disturbing trend, another pedestrian killed today crossing the street in san francisco. it happened in the sunset district on sunset boulevard and yorba street. it comes on the same day that san francisco's city leaders were working on a plan to stop the growing number of pedestrian accidents. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd is in san francisco with the details. cheryl? >> reporter: i'm live on sunset boulevard, one of the busiest streets in san francisco. i talked to a woman who said she stopped using this intersection because it's so busy and so dangerous. a problem for the people who live around here, it's a problem for people who come in to the city. sunset boulevard, the main thoroughfare to the golden gate bridge, the zoo and golden gate park. at 11:00 this morning, an unidentified man was struck by the toyota corolla and killed while crossing this busy street. >> where the pedestrian was at that time is under investigation, we don't know if they were in a crosswalk or not. >> reporter: there were three people inside the car at the time, including the driver. they were all taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. >> there's just way too fast, the cars, they put in this flashing light that people team in seam to totally ignore. >> reporter: what happened here is under investigation. but officials admit pedestrian and biker safety is a huge problem in the city. last year, 21 pedestrians and four bicyclists were killed on san francisco's streets. that's the highest number since 2007. nicole snyder is executive director of walk san francisco. >> to be honest, we are fed up hearing about another traffic say faye tallity, another person hit and killed on our streets doing something as simple as walking. >> reporter: san francisco just adopted a program called vision zero. it originated out of sweden and it's designed to keep the streets safer. i will tell you more about that coming up at 6:30. reporting live in san francisco, survived. abraham adams was behind the wheel, investigators say. they tracked him down yesterday in hercules after that off-duty police officer recognized his suv outside of a home. san bruno today escalated its tense relationship with the state's public utilities commission. the city is suing, demanding public records related to the 2010 deadly gas line inferno. san bruno's demanding a judge give the city access to puc public records first requested nearly a year ago. city leaders claim the paperwork could reveal what they call improper conduct and the evidence of cozy relationships between pg&e and its regulator. but there's one more question. >> have the puc not only reformed but have they implemented the safety procedures that have been require sod that this disaster or this type of disaster will never happen again? >> it's been a back and forth relationship after first recommending pg&e pay no fines for the blast. the puc then recommended fines of $300 million. now, in a statement, the puc responds, "we have already replied to several extensive records requested by the city of san bruno and will continue to complete our responses. requests requests hard to believe, stores. >> they go and they work and they get really sad and they cry. >> reporter: well, vivian has now expanded all the way to the big screen. at the balboa theater in san francisco this weekend premiered "stand with me", a feature-length documentary featuring vivian. >> magic of this is the 9-year-old, being able to see it through her eyes, she made something so dark approachable. people talking, it was hopeful and powering. >> spoiler alert, raj, you're in the film. best three seconds of the whole thing. seriously. the makers of the film, still motion here, have set up a model where jeff ranieri. >> our drought in place, live radars and scans around now, completely dry conditions at this point. we have clouds beginning to stream in. take it out here offshore, you can already see plenty of activity going on the thing we are tracking is not only rain changes, but this plume of moisture this is going to be the added equation to boost up several different weaker systems that will be passing over the bay area. more on the timing of that in about one minute. take you outside to that sky camera network. did manage some blue sky for parts of today but right now, that cloud cover increasing, temperatures in the mid-50s for the most part, take you into san francisco, and it's a beautiful sunset tonight. winds from 10 to 15 miles per hour, may find fog against the coastline tonight, the big thing again, head through the next 24 to 48 hours will be that increasing possibility of rainfall. we have two disstinls storm systems lining up, as that gets closer, the primary catalyst, the moisture tap, that starts to fide into the storms, think through the next 24 house, give us a decent chance of rainfall. as we head throughout this weekend, going to find a second storm system that is going to continue to tap into the moisture, at least in the north bay, we could have some good and stronger rounds of rain coming our way. let's go ahead and get to the timing on the first area of wet weather coming our way, see in futurecast, 6 p.m. tomorrow, see showers beginning to develop near the coastline but i don't think until late, late wednesday night, right around midnight, also into 6 a.m. on thursday, that's when we will start to see that widespread coverage of showers across the bay area, heaviest in the north bay and then down toward the south bay, totals range from 500ths to a half inch. clear out as we head through thursday afternoon but again, that southerly moisture tap we talked about, likely see more showers beginning to kick up as we head throughout friday's forecast, basically, as we head throughout the next six days in the forecast, you can expect a chance of rain each and every day. so, with that said you can go over the time range here, rain totals range three-quarters of an in much to go inches. yes, two inches, going to be great news, again, for the water year here across the bay area. forecast models the next seven days, high disagreement, we head to this upcoming weekend, do expect at this point, timing and also intensity changes. on that microclimate forecast, head throughout tomorrow, mainly expect cloud cover, head throughout the evening hours, a slight chance of showers increasing across the peninsula. palo alto, 57, san francisco expecting temperatures mid-50s. north bay, east bay and the tridal valley, you will notice temperatures riding in the 50s as well with a chance of showers increasing as we head throughout the evening it will mainly stay dry for the east bay and tridal virginia valley throughout all of tomorrow at this point, with that chance of increasing rainfall. as we head throughout this weekend, look at the stronger, more potent system lining up by saturday morning and then that will eventually push down into sunday and also on monday. what i'm going to leave you with right now is a look at this six-day rainfall estimate in the north bay. this is great news for the grape vines up there. we could see totals range anywhere from one to two inches. down to so the south bay, one-to-one and a half inches. some of the best weather we have had probably 13 months, you guys. >>
