On tuesday, two Santa Cruz Police officers were shot by a suspect before they even had time to react, and now there is a growing memorial in santa cruz honoring Sergeant Butch baker and detective elizabeth butler. But one item in particular left behind by a mourner has really caught the departments attention. Mixed in with the flowers, candles, and pick checks, someone pinned a purple heart medal to a teddy bear. Police received an anonymous note explaining, quote, the purple heart is for the sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty. When one loses their life for the protection of others and the greater good. I know you will understand. Quite a contrast from what this man is accused of doing at the same memorial, stealing flowers from the memorial. 53yearold Kenneth Maffei is charged with vandalism to a Law Enforcement memorial and public intoxication. This happened on friday, the first day back on the job for Santa Cruz Police officers following tuesdays killing of Sergeant Butch baker and detective elizabeth butler. And tragic news this evening from the annual escape from alcatraz triathlon in San Francisco. This morning, we know its grueling, but this morning a man from austin, texas died as he began the swim portion of the race. Race officials believe the 46yearold must have suffered a massive cardiac event during the first part of the triathlon which begins at alcatraz island. We talked with the race organizer, who says in the races 3year history, nearly 100,000 athletes have participated and this is the first time someone has died. The gentleman received assistance right when it happened. I mean, thats all you can ask for if youre an athlete. If youre an athlete and something happens, you want to get assistance as soon as something happens to you in the water or on the bike or on the run. And he got that assistance today. Unfortunately, any type of assistance we could give him, it just wasnt enough. The triathletes hit chillier waters this year because the race was moved from its traditional spot in june to february because of the americas cup. The race Organizer Says that isnt likely a factor. Participants from the age of 7 to 70 years old finished the race. It is one of the most intimate and extreme sporting events in the world. Dozens of concerned citizens showed up at a meeting in Mountain View today to talk about the spread of a toxic plume releasing dangerous plumes. For years the area around moffet field has been an epa superfund site. Groundwater and soil contaminated with tce has been removed. Tce is a cancercausing cleaning agent the military used decades ago. Our investigators discovered the plup has spread under more homes and buildings and is releasing toxic fumes. Thats why residents and watchdog agencies are worried. The concern that were asking about, and we dont really know yet, to what degree were the people who worked in the bigs, particularly the pregnant women, were informed. Google did share some information with them. And i dont know to what degree they fully explained the implications of that information. Our investigation discovered that there was a higher than expected incidence of cancer among those living over the plume of try chloroethylene, which includes googles office building. Today they shared test findings and answered residents questions. San jose firefighters are investigating a suspicious fire at an eastside high school. The fire started this afternoon around 12 35 at independence high school, which near mckee road and jackson avenue. It started outside a building in the b villa, which houses one of the principals of the school. What helped to contain the fire in this one is that the school had Operation Fire sprinklers. The thing that helped us out, though, is the building was sprinklered. So the Sprinkler System held the fire in check until the firefighters were able to get here and extinguish it completely. It took firefighters about 40 minutes to contain the blaze. They say its not the first time there has been a fire reported at this school. Fortunately this were no injuries.
