Ten pounds of gold and Silver Jewelry in a bag at the bottom of the lake. It made big news. Tonight bay area pride is about what people are not finding a lot of in the lake these days, and thats trash. One man who is helping to make that happen. When it rains seven miles of oakland city streets drains down taking with it every cigarette and candy craper that someone littered. Cleaning that up is dr. Baileys passion and profession for the past 15 years. His success is tonights bay area proud. We go over to that big pile of stuff. It would seem spending years on the shores cleaning up Mother Nature taught Richard Bailey a lot about human nature. What the people of oakland like to eetd, drink and smoke. Most of the trash comes from things we put in our mouths. Water bottles, chip bags, cigarette butts, a wine cork. You can see where the water is coming out of a big storm drain puddle. He would know what hes talking about. There is no one around who has thought more about the stuff in the lake. The homeless problem was more severe. They rely a lot on volunteers. In fact, the institute came up with the idea of self help station. Anyone with time on their hands and the environment on their mind can get to work cleaning. The efforts appear to have paid off. When the institute started collecting trash in 1997, it could easily collect 5,000 pounds of it after a heavy rain. That number is cut dramatically. This, for example, is after the rain the previous day. You would see masses of floating styrofoam and paper cups, paper plaits. There would be five times more than this. The institute doesnt claim credit for all of the success. The city has installed new stilters to catch trash before it enters the lake and passed new laws to cut down on trash being created in the first place. Many long time residents say they see a much much cleaner than its ever been and they like dr. Bailey knowing it. You get a lot of people coming by saying thank you. It happens every time we clean up. So thats encouraging. Its satisfying. We didnt have time to include it in the story but you can imagine all the interesting things he has found.
