we come together and put up some runs when we need to. we have the pitching that can hold down any team, i think, in the game. and we were able to do it. not in the most normal fashion, but we were able to do it and now we're here. you can't predict a world series berth. i don't think you should ever do that. what we had is a team we felt would compete for a play-off contention. we had speed, power in certain spots, good pumping, good starting pitching, good back into the bull pen. and we had wilson go down, that was kind of a kick to the stomach, but there were two guys, casilla and romo who stepped up. and the way the bull pen was ran by bochy this whole year was methodical, strategic, and it worked and now we're here. >> of course, the big question with regard to the tying. >> rest versus rust. detroit has had a five-day layoff. and the giants no such issues. they just finished up late last night. we do know the pitching matchup for game one should be very interesting as the giants send barry zito to the mound against reigning cy young award winner and american league most valuable player justin verlander. more from at&t coming up a bit later. for now, scott reiss, nbc bay area news. >> very good, scott. a dry scott reiss. so it's out with the cardinals and in with the detroit tigers. no time to blink. restaurants are happy, and so are these shirt makers. the national league championship shirts hanging on the windows of the giants dugout store today. all around at&t park, you see it here, workers were whipping things into world series shape. the saving grace here, they have a little experience. they've done this before just a couple of years ago. even the city has a world series plan. mayor ed lee says he began calling his department heads during the sixth inning last night. >> i already have contact all of my public safety agencies to begin all the preparations for the world series. and we're thrilled about it, of course. but we're having to go about our work in a very time-constrained way. >> everyone is fired up. the giants say they're just dusting off their game plan from the 2010 world series. they're hosting more than a thousand journalists, all arriving the last couple of days and today. they're hosting this week, and the party kicks off with a world series gala tonight. according to las vegas oddsmakers, the detroit tigers are the favorites, but that's hardly a concern for the giants. stay with nbc bay area and nbcbayarea.com for our continuing play-offs coverage. of course, yes, this is the world series. game one, first pitch tomorrow at 5:07 p.m. a big night for investors, and a new smaller apple for tech fans. let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. a thumbs-up? >> lots clicking the like button as facebook earnings were better than expected. mark zuckerberg promising about a month ago that facebook would start to bring revenue in with the mobile apps, and that's good news. so many of the users are on the site through the mobile devices. facebook's profits a bit higher, shares of stock moving higher by about 13% in after-hours trading. investors not nearly as kind to netflix tonight. reporting quarterly earnings that were pretty strong, but the forecast for future subscriber growth is weaker than expected that is how netflix makes its money. shares of netflix stock down 16% in extended trading. ahead of the closing bell, the spotlight was on apple, which rolled out a bunch of updated products today in san jose's california theater. a new i mack desk lop computer, a mac book computer and the much anticipated ipad mini. 7.9 inches of the screen, competing directly with amazon and google tablets. it will start at $329. >> and they showed here is our lineup. it's a family. and that led right into how they released the ipad and the ipad mini by saying this is a computing -- we also have a family with. therefore, we'll have different sizes and different price points to meet the needs of different folks in the market. >> lots of different products. apple has its eye on your holiday dollars. if there is a high-tech computing need in your household, apple wants to fill it. tonight at 6:00, you'll hear more from tim cook. also what customers are already doing to get their hands on the newest ipad. janelle? >> okay, thanks, scott. >> you bet. [ closing bell ] this was actually one of the worst days of the year on wall street. weak corporate earnings reports from dupont, 3m and others pummelled the market. the dow jones ended the day down 243 points to end the day at 13,102. that's the third steepest point decline of the year. the nasdaq fell 26 points to 2990. its first close below the 3,000 mark since early august. still ahead here at 5:00, the third round of storms are moving in. >> that's right, raj and janelle. we are tracking that right now on the radar as it continues to loop around right now, we have this activity off to the north as we're going to find even more changing conditions in the next 24 hours. so far rainfall totals impressive. oakland over an inch, as well as santa rosa picking up 1.21. there is the third system offshore. sheer what we're concerned about. a few of the embedded thunderstorms producing some hail. we'll let you know if we'll get any of that coming our way in my full forecast. everybody's mouth drops when they come in here, whether it's from awe or agh. >> one woman found way to turn an unlikely interest into a bay area first. also, too close for comfort? why some pet owners may want to think again before getting too close to your pooch. stay with us. >> kidman kins or adult. the dressmaker, hands that move, arms that bend, with heads, without heads. this unique italian design. who is that skinny, right? >> reporter: you see, sometimes in life you find your passion. or times it finds you. ju judy's just happened to be waiting for her in a warehouse where she had gone to buy a single mannequin. >> i'm overwhelmed when i got over there. he had about 50. they were all thrown around his warehouse, kind of dismembered, kind of a dark, dusty warehouse. it really felt kind of creepy. >> reporter: but when the owner told judy he was selling them all, and once he did, there would be no place to rent a mannequin in the bay area, well, she decided to buy them all. >> i was able to research and indeed, there is no one else doing this. but then i thought maybe there is no unelse doing this. hence the name, mannequin madness. maybe i'm crazy for doing this. >> reporter: judy is sure she is not crazy, though not all are convinced. >> everybody's mouth drops when they come in here whether it's from awe or agh. it's probably easier to get all the same time. >> reporter: judy learned from what she learned from a variety of past careers, of past successes and failures to turn this accidental business into a successful one. she and her husband jay now sell and rent mannequins all over the country. judy has won a slew of business awards, even being recognized for the recycling nature of what she does. >> we recycle about 100,000 pounds of mannequins a year just here in the bay area. just pretty unbelievable. these came from a cosmetology school. they're really popular for halloween. >> reporter: still, the best part of this for judy is not the good that has come from her line of work or her success as an entrepreneur, or even that she just enjoys coming to work each day. the best part is that she somehow managed to pull off all three. >> just realizing that it is important to follow your own instincts and bloom where you are planted. >> that's a great shot. >> was that a foot hanging out there? >> i just wanted to say she said in the story that everybody says awe or agh. when that shot showed up, raj went whoa! so there is another one that she is list in people's reactions. it certainly is a fun place to visit. >> a unique place. thanks, garvin. let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. i think the tigers and giants want a few word. what is going to happen tomorrow? >> i've got the answer here coming up in the forecast. you knee, a little bit of rainfall coming our way. let's get a look at the doppler radar right now as it scans around. we are currently finding dry weather from santa rosa to san jose. that's going to be changing. we'll have more of that in a moment. let's get a look at these impressive rainfall totals. mill valley picking up over 2 1/2 inches in the past 48 hours. berkeley nearly 2 inches. danville 1.63. and mt. diablo over an inch and a half. as the radar scans around off to the north, we are tracking our next batch of showers. and the thing that i'm concerned about at least with this right now is the fact that we are picking up on some isolated embedded thunderstorms that is also producing some hail. so we may actually see some of that make it to our way here in the next 12 to 18-hour period. also up across the sierra. it may be clear right now. as you head throughout the next 24 hours, we are forecasting 4 to 8 inches of snowfall. winter weather advisory in effect. and of course as many of you know, it is cold out here right now. let's take you outside of the live hd sky network and transamerica building, looking great with this dry weather. and right next to the peak of that, you can see the towering q, or in other words towering cumulus clouds, up at about 15 to 20,000 feet. a sign of instability in the atmosphere. and down in san jose, we're also looking at clear weather. and also a mix of some sun and some clouds. so let's get you into the next 48 hours. and what we do expect to happen across the bay area. we have this broad area of low pressure in the pacific. we're already tracking the potential thunderstorms, even developing several hundred miles out here in the pacific. so no doubt we'll keep that instability in the forecast. and a lot of cold air wrapped in this. don't expect any kind of big warm-up in the next two days. as we look at our wednesday forecast, chance of isolated thunderstorms, 40s and 50s at the coastline. and we'll find 60s inland. eventually, as we head throughout thursday, we are looking at a clearing forecast. here it is. hour by hour, throughout tonight, we're going to find showers develop up into the north bay. and then for tomorrow morning, we're going to see this push a little bit more to the south. and we do expect wet roadways for the peninsula, north bay, east bay, and also for the south bay. then as we head throughout the afternoon hours, we still cannot rule out some showers up into the north bay. overall totals with this next system look to be anywhere from a tenth of an inch to a quarter inch from the north bay back here into livermore, pleasanton, also walnut creek, even including san jose. so not a huge soaker, but definitely going to get some wet weather in here for tomorrow morning. mid 60s for daytime highs from the north bay and santa rosa all the way down to los gatos. 65 in san jose and 6 almadin valley. temperatures in the low to mid-60s. a dry forecast for thursday. by friday in michigan, well, we've got colder weather and also showers coming their way. here it is. when it comes to weather and also weather stats and baseball, the thing you're concerned about, chance of a rainout, 1%. chance of a rain delay, 30%. so we're still in the good there. and can you bring the umbrellas? yes at at&t park and detroit also yes. they prefer those smaller folding umbrellas if you can fit it under your seat, you're probably good to go. so one more day of this iffy weather at at&t park, and then we're looking good on thursday. >> after last night we can handle anything. >> of course. they like the rain. puckering up to your pup could carry real health risks. the new health warning for dog owners. plus, it's a slim-down that is creating quite a stir. the department store under fire for putting a childhood icon on a diet. in health matters, many pet owners love their dogs so much, you know this, that they kiss them on the mouth. but that could give you gum disease. japanese researchers took dental plaque from dogs and their owners and found one particular bacteria was found in both. the result shows that bacteria could be transmitted between dog and owner. but some vets say the study does not prove conclusively that kissing dogs poses any danger. this probably won't help bushes health officials say it's probably best to stay away from kissing your dog. high-end department store barney's is taking heat for featuring an anorexic minnie mouse in its window display. on the left is barney's new version of minnie mouse, compared with the normal one we're used to seeing. and minnie isn't the only one getting the skinny makeover. she'll be joined by her friends mickey, goofy and daisy there is already a petition out asking them to leave minnie alone. so how are we looking? >> we've got some cumulus clouds. >> they look beautiful, actually. that shot you had up is amazing. >> looks almost like a pinting out there. we do have a chance here of some isolated thunderstorms for tomorrow morning. so your commute is going to get wet. then it will dry out here on thursday. a few showers for the first game of the world series tomorrow. >> thanks for join us. "nightly news" is next.
