it is a thoroughly modern problem for which dr. dick post had an answer nearly 40 years ago. >> well, the idea is the rotating wheel will store energy. >> in 1973, to be exact, is when dr. post, a livermore national laboratory scientist, co-wrote an article about the potential of flywheel technology to store large amounts of electricity. >> it's a fundamental fact that if you knew how to do it, this is a very good way to store energy. >> reporter: but in science, the journey between knowing and doing is often a long one, a lesson dr. post has learned more than once in his career. dick post arrived in livermore not long after the lab opened in 1952. six decades of success have followed. just ask dr. post how many patents bear his name. >> i've lost count, but i think it's in the order of 45, something like that. >> there's a few parts that we have to order and stuff. >> reporter: still, much of what dick post works on is so advanced, so theoretical he will likely never see it put to use in his lifetime. which is why this means so much to him. after 40 years of fits and starts, of doubters and obstacles, after 40 years of waiting for the world to catch up to his brain, the flywheel as energy storage may finally be coming of age. >> very satisfies, very satisfying, definitely. >> reporter: investors are pouring millions of dollars into dr. post's technology. and in just a few years, an array of hundreds of these flywheels might just be put to work on a wind or solar farm. >> and that makes a difference to me. i'd like to see something put to practical use while i'm still around. >> that's remarkable. >> i forgot to mention, he's 93 years old. >> that is just stunning. stunning. >> he retired in 1994 but still goes to work four days a week. he's operating at such a high level. and i think i am literally half his age, so i have another 46 years of my life to go and it really inspires you how productive and how on top of it all you can be. >> if we can be that productive. not personally you, garvin, all of us. well, we here at nbc bay area want to give good ideas in our community a chance to be great and that's why we're launching 21st century solutions. it's our grant challenge for local nonprofits with new and innovative programs. if you want to learn how to apply for a grant that's worth up to $50,000, go to nbcbayarea.com. you should know that the applications are due by august 15th. all right. let's turn things over to jeff ranieri. slightly bit cooler. i went for a bike ride at noon and it was glorious outside. >> sun all around from the east bay back to the coastline but this isn't a storm building but the marine layer and fog. that's where that cooler breeze came from. take a look at how widespread it is, throughout most of california. that marine layer stretching several hundred miles all the way down into the south. currently numbers are comfortable out here, right where we should be this time of the year in san francisco with 73, 69 napa, 79 novato and back to the east bay, 84 and 74 in the south bay. we'll take you out to that live hd camera network and it's not doing much to help produce cloud cover but slight southerly flow with these winds and it has been a bit sticky for you. we'll take you to san francisco and moisture moving in with that fog throughout marin and also eventually here in downtown san francisco. so, yes, of course, that fog will be back for the morning hours. most extensive for the coastline and also the north basement and then throughout wednesday, a cooling trend will be continuing. it could be about 20 degrees cooler than what we had this weekend. and by this upcoming weekend, temperatures are going to be getting a lot hotter. storm track is right where it should be this time of the year, well off to the north. we'll get a small slice of this cooler air over the next 48 hours in the upper levels. it's not overly cold but it will help to moderate our temperatures and also keep the marine layer going at the coastline with 50s and 60s. and then for the interior valley, 70s and 80s for wednesday, even thursday calling it sunny and crisp as we head into the end of that workweek. so real enjoyable here as we continue throughout the week. 50 in santa rosa, 53 in san rafael to start, 55 in san jose and also 54 in los gatos. let's get you into those daytime highs for our wednesday. 80 in san jose, 80 in morgan hill, 79 in sunnyvale and 74 in palo alto, so slightly cooler in the south bay, right near average back in the east bay. 83 in pleasanton, 82 in walnut creek and a picks of 70s from hayward to the castro valley. for san francisco, 67 there, 70s in santa rosa and mid to upper 70s throughout wine country. three days to go until the london olympics, the opening ceremony on friday. only a 30% chance of a shower. all in all the best weather they have had in months as a lot of spectators start heading out to the games. they're thinking this is lopd?
