Inspect in the tri valley and the delta and the north bay. There is just enough of a marine layer we can see it, a thin layer of fog at about 700 feet just above the ocean looking at the outer sunset. We are going to feel some really hot temperatures just away from the coastline. And all of these areas that were seeing now shaded in orange, thats where we do still have the heat advisory that continues until thursday night. For the area shaded in orange which includes Solano County and extending toward the sacramento valley, this is where temperatures will be the hottest reaching up to 105 degrees in vacville. You need to limit your outdoor time and try to get to some airconditioning. This heat does not loosen its grip until later on next week. Well talk about that and some more hot spots around the bay area coming up in a few minutes. Nbcs rick boone is in livermo livermore. We know its always hot there. You just got off the phone with p pg e, but it sounds like theyre concerned with Power Outages all week long but one particular one stands out . Reporter its going to be thursday. Thats going to be a pretty tough day around the bay area. Its expected to be a pretty good strain on the electric grid that day. What we know so far is theyre expecting major Power Outages especially on that day. Yesterdays outages were just as strong as the heat storm we had in 2006. A majority of customers, over 100,000 people lost power since friday. Now thursday its expected to exceed their system. It will be at its max of high energy use. No alerts in place right now, but officials are asking you to conserve your airconditioning usage as you possibly can and safely can. Just ahead in about 27 or so minutes from now, im going to tell you whats so significant about this thing right there, that tower back there has a lot to do with how people are trying to stay cool throughout this heat wave this week, and it is going to be a hot one. It should come as no surprise that fire danger is high across the bay area right now, not just because of soaring temperatures but when rains fuel the growth of vegetation, that is all dry and ready to ignite. Its leading to scenes like this. This is a brush fire this morning in cordelia. We brought you live breaking coverage from the bay. Pete suratos was first on the scene. It looks like it calmed down a little bit now but fire officials have to be on alert. Reporter good morning, sam. Weve been monitoring this fire since 9 00 a. M. Its still under investigation. You can see they made a lot of progress. As you see, several Fire Agencies hee agencies here on the ground, cordelia taking the lead on this. Even though its confined to this facility youre looking at, so a lot of it was wood debris that caught on fire. Its a cause of concern for the residents. There is always a concern with grass. There is a grass at the building behind you here. Its possible that could go up. Hopefully it doesnt. Reporter according to cordelia fire, they say the fire started roughly around 4 00 a. M. They were taking out the piles of debris in order to stop this fire. That fire chief i spoke to a couple times this morning said it appears the weekend heat wave which hit the hundreds in this area may have played a role. This area here, you get a lot of traffic on 680, people throwing out cigarettes, sparks off of chains, you know, could start it. This one here, i think, was from spontaneous combustion from the mulch and the cocompost just si there in the heat. As its slowly starting to decompose its putting off heat. Reporter cordelia fire said this same compost facility started two years ago and it took them several hours to put it out. You can see crews working on that mulch fire, working to extinguish it. It is very windy in this part so crews will look to prevent spot fires from popping up. Power has been knocked out for some buildings in this area, but in speaking to cordelia fire, theyre hoping to clear out this scene behind me by this afternoon. Were live in cordelia, pete suratos, nbc bay area news. Elsewhere in california despite the heat wave, firefighters made critical ground on two brush fires there. This fire is near estate lake north of los angeles. If you drive past Magic Mountain in valencia, youve probably passed it. It destroyed two outbuildings. At last check it was only 10 contained. Hundreds of firefighters are out on the front lines fighting the flames in a different area. A small fire burning in San Bernardino county. Only 50 contained. Its burned 11 acres so far. The heat will be around for a while. As pete mentioned, as rick boone mentioned, there are power concerns, there are fire concerns. We are learning this morning that actress Carrie Fisher had cocaine, morphine, codeine and oxycodone in her system at the time of her death. The coroner released her autopsy this morning. Reporter minutes after the deadly terror attack and the injured are treated where they fell, rammed by a van at high speed. He drove on the pavement, coming straight towards all the muslims. As hes coming to them, he hit all of them. Women and men on the floor, people bleeding. There was screaming. You know, total anarchy. Reporter the attacker appeared to crash into people, leaving the mosque. We tried to get him out of the car. Before he got out of the car, he was spit and go biting at us. Reporter some say he was shouting threats at muslims. Those he tried to kill handed him over to police. He was led away to the police van. He basically screamed out, ill do it again, and he stuck out his hand like that as a gesture to mock people. Reporter one man died at the scene, though police are not sure this was as a result of the attack. Theyre now examining the van. No matter what the motivation for this attack proves to be, we are keeping an open mind. This is being treated as a terrorist attack. It is a reminder that terrorism, extremism and hatred take many forms, and our determination to tackle them must be the same whoever is responsible. That could be the size of five times what the Valley Fair Mall is right now. The Investigation Continues this morning into a deadly shooting in concord over the weekend. Police say it happened around 2 00 saturday morning in the downtown area near the brendan theater. Officers found the victim and tried to save him, but it was too late and he died at the scene. Right now his name has not been released, but a swat team did arrest a suspect at his home in oakley. Were waiting to see this morning if we learn new details on a Police Shooting on the bay bridge that happened over the weekend. That shooting ended up halting eastbound traffic for hours on fathers day. San Francisco Chp says that officers were at the scene of a crash just east of the bueno island tunnel when a red truck went around traffic and appeared to go right toward officers. They did not follow commands to stop and a Police Officer opened fire. That suspect was taken to Highland Hospital with injuries. Its not clear exactly how badly he was wounded. Passengers in the car were not injured. As we just mentioned, President Trump is meeting with ceos and tech leaders in the Silicon Valley, but once again hes trying to keep the focus on his agenda while also dealing with allegations involving the russia probe. They posed with their haul of cocaine last week. They are due in alameda at some point today. That cocaine was all seized in Central America in the last two months. Its street value is estimated at 266 million. A California Homeowner got a really kind of willyinducing surprise. The couple was in their jacuzzi last week when the wife saw what she thought was a dog toy on the ground. Its a time when you touch something really hot, you dont know what it is and then you are processing. She bends up to pick up what she thought was a toy there. It was not. It was a baby rattlesnake. Thats what were watching for the high temperatures over the next couple days is really going to be a scorcher as we look around the bay area. I want to show you somewhere nice, cool and refreshing. Point reyes right now. 61 degrees with clear skies there. And sunol making it up to 93 degrees and the inland valleys close to the 90s and 100 degrees. Berkeley, kind of in between. 74 degrees with some beautiful views across the bay. The 7day forecast is coming up across the bottom of the screen. Youll see as we go through the week, it just stays hot even into the weekend as temperatures come down a few degrees. Were already at 88 degrees. These are the current temperatures, not the highs. Were at 89 degrees in fairfield, livermore 93 and morgan hill already at 85 while palo alto is at 75 and San Francisco is now at 72 degrees heading into the low 80s today. We will have just enough of an onshore flow to keep San Francisco and the immediate coastline cool, but you get on the other side of the hills and really it doesnt help you out very much. We are going to have those valleys heating up today with those wind speeds only at about 5 to 10 miles an hour. As we go through the day, looking at the north bay. Napa to 98 degrees, 101 degrees in concord and livermore. Up to 100 degrees there. Half moon bay will see a high of 72 today and santa rosa 97. Weve been watching some thunderstorms firing up around the sierra. Now things have since quieted down and its also been triggering some thunderstorms well away from the sierra as well. Now, as we get a look out there now, we see the clouds developing and theres still a chance that we could see some storms firing up today and temperatures very warm reaching into the mid to upper 80s. So really, you cant even go there to find a nice, refreshing place to cool off, but you can head to the coastline. Santa cruz will be in the upper 70s for the afternoon and temperatures dropping back very quickly. And San Francisco highs in the low 80s there and we stay there as we go through the week. For the valleys we keep the triple digit temperature. Some dangerous heat continuing. And thursday looks like that will be the peak of the heat. And then it starts to come down a few degrees each day heading into the weekend. But it still looks like well have the air conditioners on full blast in the valleys over the next seven days. Reporter how an advanced warship with sophisticated equipment and a watch crew could collide with a cargo ship more than three times its size is the focus of several investigations. There are conflicting reports about the time of the crash. And marine traffic records show the cargo ship, called the acx crystal, made a series of course changes and a uturn before heading toward tokyo. The fitzgeralds captain, commander brice benson, suffered a head injury and was airlifted from the destroyer. Now out of the hospital, he is facing questions about how a collision could happen in calm weather. Repairs could take up to a year. The starboard side is crushed and gashed. The entire crew scrambled to keep the ship from sinking but couldnt save the seven lives that were lost. Its unclear how long the investigations will take. Japans investigators have already been on board the cargo ship that was involved. U. S. Navy officials here sayfulr now theyre focused on the families of those sailors. Back to you. Happening today, at least one of the suspects accused of attacking a lift driver on highway 1 in San Francisco is due in court. Police arrested three men after identifying the suspects from videos like this one of the attack. Police arrested durwayne johnson, rodriguez and Dwayne Williams all from San Francisco. Johnson is due in court a few hours ago, and police say the attackers were on dirt bikes and motorcycles when they cornered that lift driver, ripped him from his vehicle, beat him, and he did suffer a broken nose and broken leg. Now to some good news. The San Francisco zoo is inviting ups workers and their families to visit for free which is a show of support following the shooting at this San Francisco facility last week. The sf zoo president and executive director extended that offer saying every tragedy deserves Community Response and support, but that the recent ups shooting feels close to home as ups has been a transporter for the zoo for many years. She hopes that ups families will take advantage of the therapeutic power of the animals and the park. The offer to visit for free for ups families goes until the end fortunate month. Members in San Mateo County expect to sign off on a deal that would equip Police Officers with body cameras. It means that the city is spending close to 700,000 for that technology. San mateo hopes to have the program up and running by this fall. We are learning new details this morning about a destructive Apartment Fire in san jose. Everyone made it out safely, but now 10 people have no place to stay after that fire erupted at the complex on stokes avenue yesterday afternoon. This complex is about a mile away from Santa Clara Medical center. Four apartments were damaged. Fighting the fire in the heat was also a tough chore for crews. They had to call in more firefighters for help. When were wearing all our heavy gear on a normal day, its warm enough. Having to do all this work on a day like today makes the amount of time you can work so much shorter, so we bring in a lot of extra personnel so we can rotate people quickly so we dont wipe out our own people. It took about 30 minutes for crews to gain control of the fire. But again, no one was injured. Portugal has declared three days of mourning in the wake of a weekend wildfire that killed dozens of people, many of whom were trapped in their cars. The video is very hard to watch. The fire is one of several still burning in rural central portugal about 100 miles nor ea northeast of lisbon. On saturday it became a death trap for people trying to evacuate. In all, 60 people died. Many victims caught in their cars as flames spilled over a roadway and just enveloped those vehicles. Firefighters believe the fire was started by lightning, but at this point leaders in portugal say theyre only concerned about the lives lost. Were talking about ancestry dna, a company that allows you to submit a small amount of your dna to reveal your roots. Its changing its contract to calm privacy concerns. Last month we introduced you to larry guernsey but balked when he had to grant ancestry a perpetu perpetual, royalty free, worldwide license to use his dna. It just sounds like theyve left it open to do anything that they want with it. Reporter after we broadcast larrys concerns, ancestry responded with a blog post that indicated it received a number of questions and vowed to update its contract. Well, now the company is making good on that promise with newly revised terms and conditions. The worldwide license is still in the user agreement. However, the contract now says, ancestry does not claim ownership to your dna and it contains new language that lets users delete their Genetic Information from ancestrys data base at any time. Larrys main concern was ancestry selling his dna data to a Health Insurance company. Ancestrys updated contract now says it does not share Genetic Information to employers, insurance providers or thirdparty marketers without your consent. In a statement, a spokesman said, these changes provide additional clarity around the policies we already follow in terms of data ownership and sharing. In a blog post to users, the companys chief privacy officer said, there are a lot of questions to be asked and discussions to be had about genetic testing. We are dealing with that right now. This is the time youll want to check on your friends and neighbors, someone who doesnt have airconditioning. Invite them on over. We have some sizzling temperatures in the inland valleys where we are under a heat advisory for all of these areas shaded in orange, and then where we see the red for Solano County extending over toward the central valley, thats where the heat will be the greatest. As our temperatures reaching over 100 degrees for several hours during the day, and our high temperatures could reach as high as 106 degrees there, so you do want to limit your outdoor time and real hard for anyone who has to work outside. If youre in daly city, youre seeing the fog and the temperatures are nice and cool. Lucky you, you have that natural airconditioning. In San Francisco its 72 degrees. 74 degrees in oakland, and then the farther you go away from there you see those temperatures getting much hotter. We have a wide range in temperatures, so lets head to the south bay as our high temperatures today will be a few degrees lower than yesterday but still really hot.
