Happening over the venetian bridge. Our pete suratos is standing by for a News Conference at the center there. What did you find out. Reporter they tell us theres going to be a News Conference at about 11 45 a. M. It could be a combination of police as well as other city officials speaking at that News Conference. I want to go and show you guys a live look right now. You can see it on the screen of the situation right now at the valero refinery. You can see the flames coming out of the stacks. When we were crossing the cartinas bridge earlier we could see the black smoke. The flares are a result of a power outage at the refinery just before 7 00 a. M. Were learning that pg e says it happened during what they call a routine switching but that power was restored shortly after. Now, as you mentioned, some places are still being asked to shelter in place such as Matthew Turner and Roberts Temple Elementary School and folks at the nearby Industrial Park were also notified to evacuate. Now, not too long ago we spoke with a resident who said it was around 7 00 a. M. When he heard the sirens coming from the refinery indicating he should stay inside. Sunrise, heard the whistle, and it triggered the shelter in place. I like looked outside the door and saw some black smoke. I didnt know until you told me that there was a power outage at the refinery. He actually did notify him about the situation. Valero released a full statement explaining this situation saying that the power outage sent the product to the flare which is used to monitor. Theity is not being asked to shelter in place but as i mentioned at the top of the report were waiting for a News Conference from fire and police and other city officials here at 11 45. Well send it back to you in the studio. An empty room and well get updates from pete. Thanks very much. Youll see the column of smoke moving in a particular direction. That will tells us the winds are playing a big part in the smoke hacking around the area. Lets turn to meteorologist kari hall. When can we expect improvement . Well have gusty winds as we go through the Early Morning and afternoon. The winds will be picking up. We see the direction of the wind speeds by these arrows here blowing onshore and also across the bay, so as we get a look closer at the smoke, its mostly flowing into sassoon bay and mostly over the marshlands so we wont see this moving over towards vallejo and as theres an approaching cold front we can see by the clouds spanning over the ocean and moving closer to the bay area. That will cause the winds to increase as we go into the rest of the afternoon. So the smoke is still coming in from the west and moving off towards the east, and we will still see that same wind direction, even as this cold front approaches, but it will be stronger which may carry it a little bit farther off towards the east, and well continue to monitor that. Sam and kris. Thank you very much. A live look at that flaring once again and as kari mentioned well continue to follow this breaking news. Well have updates throughout this newscast and you can also find some of the photos and videos that weve been posting online at nbcbayarea. Com. If you download the nbc bay area app youll also get the latest alert. And more breaking news right now. A major break in a 12yearold cold case in the north bay. The Sonoma County sheriff Just Announced in the last 15 minutes an arrest in the 2004 murder mers of a young engaged couple on a remote jenner beach. Sheriff steve operateos says this man 38yearold is now under arrest for the murders of the couple as well as the murder of his own brother in forestville. He allegedly new details about the beach killings that no one else would have known. He had information about the killings that no other person could have known and we have located evidence that corroborates his statement. Based on what detectives have been able to learn we feel confident that we have jason and lindseys killer in custody. A 26yearold jason allen and 23yearold Lindsey Cutshaw were camping on Horseshoe Beach in jenner when someone shot them as they were sleeping in their sleeping bags. Their bodies were not discovered until days later by a helicopter, and their murders have remained a mystery until today. The young couple were camp counselors and were enjoying time off before heading home to the mid wrest to get married. Were awaiting a verdict in the sierra lamar case. A developing story right now. Both sides wrapped up their closing arguments. That happened yesterday and now the fate of this trial is in the hands of the jury. Nbc bay areas bob redell is live. If they dont come to a verdict by lunchtime today, this is going into next week . Correct, samms. Jurors are only deliberating for half a day at the hall of justice until noon so unless they come up with a verdict within the next 55 minutes they will break for the weekend and some back monday to begin deliberations again. Remember, this trial lasted for three months. This panel of six men and six women potentially have a lot of information, a lot of evidence to consider in trying to decide whether or not to convict antolin garciatorres for the murder of sierra lamar after disappearing at the bus stop in 2012. Lamars suspect was found in the suspects car, will they side with that or will they question with the defense that maybe she ran away and is still out there. A Santa Clara University law professor says it could take the jury quite some time to come back with a verdict. It could take at a minimum several days, but it could even take longer for them to work through the evidence, and some of it depends on whether or not theres any disagreement in the jury room. Its been a long trial but its just a blink of an eye compared to how much time we havent had sierra with us. If this jury convicts garciatorres they will also have to decide whether or not he should be sentenced to death. If they find him not guilty, hell face life in prison here in the states. A story you were covering this morning, a vend e vandal devastating a Police School and on a day thats supposed to be celebratory. Nearly a dozen windows were broken and glass strewn on the carpet where babies and toddlers would typically be playing. The vandal did at least 10,000 worth of other classrooms, too, the kitchen and the offices there. This happened on may the 4th. That was supposed to be a star wars theme celebration of their yearlong effort to learn the alphabet. The vandal was actually still inside the building when the owner joyce bratt arrived. Though she managed to snap a picture of her, it was little consolation because she then had to call parents knowing they would be in the lurch. Children arrived in costume to have the biggest day of their year and they had to turn them away and that breaks my heart, making the phone calls yesterday morning to tell over 100 families that they couldnt come to care is one of the hardest things ive had to do. Obviously very emotion a. M. For her. Parents though have turned around to try to make this a positive. The Southern California republican assemblyman is now organizing a Voter Initiative to strike down that gas tax. Its an effort that comes weeks after brown got the legislature to agree with the tax which will provide more than 50 billion to improve bridges, tunnels and the roadways. Not all drivers are sold on repeal that plan. I would probably vote against it so that we could pay the tax. That said, lets hope they will take the money and actually fix these roads. They didnt ask their opinion, they just rammed it through. If 3665,000 registered voters sign that petition, the repeal would be on its way to the ballot. At this time would i like to have steve from the Environmental Protection agency come forward and talk about the late readings and what they are doing at this time. My name is see calanog. Im a federal onscene coordinator with the u. S. Environmental protection agency. Im out of the San Francisco office. Any other okay. The before 46 40ks this morning the uscpa through the Natural Response Center received notification by valero, the situation going on at the refinery. Within about half han hour epa personnel were arriving on scene to start assessing the situation and it continued to evolve in our discussions with city and county officials here and requested and brought in additional personnel and equipment to augment air monitoring and sampling activities that were going on. As the chief had already mentioned we had personnel and equipment out with city and county officials in various locations that he mentioned. Within the past hour and assessing them suggests that the levels at various teams peaked and what we were looking at primary insurgents is sulfur dioxide gases and sulfur primarily. In light of whats going on in the weather we expect the levels to diminish over time and well continue to monitor and determine that is in fact happening. Once we have a more complete picture well be able to update you all in the community about where we are. Were here to assist our state and county and making sure that the community is safe. So as far as that is concerned, how is that potential health risk for people who may be asthmatic, et cetera, ten times . The monitoring stations were at peak ten times with normal become gound that we expect to see for the various constituents here. And in our effort to collect data its to support the county Health Agency for our determination for what is safe and whats going on here. Weve been listening into information of information of what they have been getting and talking out of the city. The Fire Department and Police Department and, then, of course, the hazardous materials. What we dont know at this somers point when the School Shelters in place might lift. They are evaluating the situation right now and as soon as we get more information on that well push it out to you. Have a great day. Stand by, everyone. Were live in five, four, three, two, one. Oh, happy Cinco De Mayo, everybody. We are ready to party. Mint juleps coming up, too. But it is fill in the blank friday. We have nina parker and dax with us lets do these rapid fire rapid round. Yesterday, history made here in hollywood. Curt and goldie were honored. They are iconic. Good word. My favorite couple in hollywood. I love them
