We showed you a little earlier in the newscast how the city of san jose is helping some of theving times of februarys floods, but they are not the only ones pitching in. I love this story. Its one San Jose Elementary School that is going above and way beyond. Garmin thomas is here with their effort in todays bay area proud. Hacienda environmental is a Magnet School and draws people from all over san jose and what it means in this case while its not close geographically to the flooding, the flooding still hit close to home. Weve got the daily total figured out. Reporter one of the math skills Jessica Friedman expects her fourth graders at hacienda elementary to master is how to estimate. Whats that number again. Reporter this past month it was jessica who needed to brush up because she clearly underestimated them. Like super proud of you. They absolutely surprised me. But in the best way, the best possible way reporter this all begins with two of jessicas students, roma smith and jenna kang, both of whom live here san joses coyote creek and both of whose families were hard by februarys flooding. Right now im living at my grandmothers has. The two girls made a presentation about the flood to the schools Student Council suggesting their story and suggesting a flood fundraiser, mott for their families though. We did if for our neighbors because they really do need a lot of help. The Council Agreed and a schoolwide goal was set, 5,000. I remember when they said 5,000, i was i kind of wanted them to big something more achievable. Who has donations. Still, when spread out among the entire school, all jessicas students had to do to do their part was raise a little more than 200. We thought, oh, my god, if we raise that much were going to be awesome and now i dont know what happened. Sock, so youre adding 21. Reporter what happened is they needed more and more sheets for their thermometer, more and more ink and their best multidigit addition skills. 1,943. 86. Some students raided their savings and others gave their tooth fairy money. Some gave two, even three times. Victory lap. I dug into my piggy bank and my grandma gave me some. Yeah, i think it will help them. They might have started thinking about just their classmates, but the money these students have raised will help many, many more, showing that one time of flood can sometimes lead to another. They see neighbors in need and they see classmates in need, and they just want to be part of the solution. Reporter while jessicas class finished with more than 2,000 raised, the rest of the school did their part, too. The total for the fundraiser, over 5,400. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. More than double, can you believe it. More than double and not just that, but the fact that they were doing the fundraiser and gave their own money out of their piggy banks. Tough to get kids to part with their money if they dont believe in the cause. If they believe in the cause they will give you everything. Selfless, wise beyond their years. Im not even a mom. I cant even imagine when im a mom one day. If you are a mom youre going to want to get the boots out, the rain boots and the umbrellas. No risk of flooding here later in the weak, just risk of rain. Theres a risk of localized fligd on t flooding. Were expected to see a high of 74 in palo alto. Napa 76, and it looks like, unfortunately, the north bay is going to be getting hit first, at early as tomorrow morning. Live Doppler Radar, we can see a lot of the cloud cover and there it goes the cold front off the Pacific Northwest and thats going to start trekking in by tomorrow and then become widespread by tomorrow night. Were also going to start seeing those wind picking up with very strong gusts, anywhere between 40 and possibly even 50 miles per hour. Lets talk about this time line very quickly. By about 10 30 well see well seat yellow and the orange, the strongest potential for heavy downpours and, yes, this storm is also going to pack a punch which means there will be blizzardlike conditions in the sierras so if you had plans to head to lake tahoe remember to be safe on the road. Right now it looks like your morning commute is going to be the messiest on friday morning so if you have to head to work early on take some extra time and prepare the kiddos with rain gear. By about 9 00 on friday well still see that rain in there and thats because an additional storm system comes in and thats fast moving hand what that is going to do and carry some rain on over into saturdays forecast and sunday we clear out nicely and on monday we do see an additional storm system that will bring spotty rain through the bay area. As for as estimated rain totals it is looking like 2 to 3 inches with the majority of the rainfall still sticking off to the north bay and, of course, we are seeing or expecting to see the possibility of anywhere between 2 to 4 feet of snow for the sierra. Heres a quick check of what you can expect. Just looking ahead, well issuing as of knew, it looks like a microclimate weather alert for friday and thats because were expecting strong gusts which could bring downed trees and, of course, Power Outages with isolated flooding concerns and no major river flooding for now. Over the next seven days a look of what to expect over the weekend and it looks like showers are in the forecast and please go out and enjoy today. I hope you two do it. I think well walk the dog.
