We investigate the widespread use of bogus airplane parts all over the united states. Coming up, a fatal crash caused by something so simple that you sit on it every day. Airplaneso cra and pele todie. Sale evywhe. E partfor it is an issue that caused airplanes to crash. Questionable airplane parts for sale everywhere. What did you get your hands on and how did you do it . These are actual airplane parts and it just took a point and a click on the internet. They are supposed to have official faa documentation but when we ordered them online they didnt. Many of them did not. Experts say they can pose a safety risk to anyone that flies. Gails husband died when the cessna he was piloting crashed. Experience Cross Country pilot with more than 1,000 flight hours, the 67yearold was a beloved father and grandfather. Sa he loved to climb and the technology about the plane and the backup system that things would work. Nine months after the crash investigators officially ruled that pilot disorientation, loss of Situational Awareness caused the accident. The ntsb report showed no evidence of a premishap mechanical malfunction or failure. But gail and her family were not satisfied with the ruling and hired one of the countrys best attorneys to dig further. There is no noncritical part on an airplane. His Meticulous Research discovered it was not pilot error causing the crash but unsafe, unapproved airplane part. To slide the seat back and forth. A seat track release was installed in kens plane by a local mechanic and had no documentation or certification. He suspects that caused the politics seat to move out of control. If that seat slips back, you have a big problem because you cant reach the controls to steer the plane up and down and reach the rutter pedals with the feet. A civil jury agreed ruling the mechanic that installed the unapproved seat part should pay more than 13 million. Who is checking . The answer to that is basically no one. The faa considers unapproved parts a risk to aviation because the parts may not withstand the high stress conditions found on airplanes. But an investigation by nbc bay area discovered bogus parts can be found easily throughout the aviation industry. In response to our records question, the faa provided 135 different records of unapproved airplane parts ins it National Tracking and reporting system in the last five years alone. Included in the reports, unapproved parts found in commercial aircraft. We found 22 different crashes that killed seven people and injured 18 others where ntsb investigators pointed to unapproved parts contributing to the accidents. It is very serious. Ken gardner helped to run the Program Beginning in the 1990s. I get all of the suspected unapproved reports coming in. Though he retired in 2011, he serves as a consultant. He said approved parts cost more because they must go through rigorous inspection. Have no idea when they are go to fail. If they fail . It they fail it could be critical. Catastrophic. How do dangerous parts find their way on board airplanes . This is one way. We found these airplane parts for sale over the internet and we bought them. Everything from orings to an engine piston, exhaust valve to lighting lock rings. From a sensitive switch to electric decoder panel. Previously failed. Out in the middle of the atlantic and goes bad, where is it going to go . The electric decoder panel will sell new for more than 1,000. That really needs to be investigated. You would not put that in your aircraft . I would not put that the thing out there for sale. Someones life could depend on that. The consequence for our family has been unbelievable. That is why gail is speaking out to let everyone know what can happen when an unapproved part is put into an airplane. When i look at his pictures, all that i can think about is this did not have to happen. Now the airplane mechanic who worked on ken gottliebs pilot seat still works here and still has has license. The faa acknowledges that there is a problem here but a spokesman told me in a statement that unapproved parts make up a small fraction of all aviation products out there and the faa aggressively pursues the cases saying they will issue a civil fine of up to 32,000 if they can prove an unapproved part like this. This came out of a commercial jet. People say no. No. It happened in commercial aircraft as well. The mechanic that worked on the plane, the fatal flight, he had to be licensed. He would have known it was a bad part . Absolutely. There are times the paperwork was forged. You put it in any way. It is all about the bottom line. This can run for 1,000. We bought it for 60. It works its way in to the system. They watch pilots closely but not the mechanics and the parts this closely. If you have a tip for our Investigative Unit give us a call or send an email to the unit. Guess what happens in five days . Well, four now according there. You have to worry about. What one woman is doing with them makes it a bay area proud story. Before dorothy lang took her most Iconic Images she was a portrait photographer in San Francisco where she took a picture of and became lifelong friends with ellen chongs grandmother. There is more than one way to be put on the map. Sure, tucked away you will find the Peninsula Museum of art on any street map. But how does a small, relatively new museum specializing in living north californiian artists put itself on the map of the art world . Ellen chong, one of the museums dedicated volunteers has a plan one that she is pretty excited about. I was welling up with tears. Because it just means so much. It has to do with something that has been tucked away on the floor of ellens closet for some time. I had them in my possession for three decades. In my fire safe. More than 20 prints by the legendary photographer. They are pieces of family history. That is my mother as a young girl, walking on a barrel down a shallow stretch of the creek. Ellens grandmother was lifelong friends with lange and the photos are snapshots from the time their families spent together. Ever since i saw the collection as a teenager, i was told how famous the photographer was and she was a friend of grandma. I did not know my grandparents sun bathed in the nude until then. Not until then they started volunteering at the museum that she fell in love with it and started to think of ways that she could do more to raise the stature. We marched into the Museum Founders office. I laid them out for her and she was astonished. Right in front of her was a treasure that was hidden away for 30 years. Conservation is now set to open at the museum this january. Ellen suspects there are many more famous museums, but just one that she loved enough to share it with. We did not include the image of ellens grandparents nude sun bathing. To see that one you will have to go to the exhibit in january. Family show, folks. We will be right back.
