KNTV NBC Bay Area News At 11AM June 23, 2016

People, mostly latinos, from deportation. President obama reacted to that Decision Just moments ago. Were going to have to decide whether we are people who accept the cruelty of ripping children from their parents arm or whether we actually value families and keep them together for the sake of all of our communities. Were going to have to decide whether were a people who continue to educate the worlds brightest students only to send them away to compete against us or whether we encourage them to stay and create new jobs and businesses right here in the united states. So thats president obamas reaction. Plenty of reaction from the bay area this morning. Lets go live to Stephanie Chuang standing by live in San Francisco. Stephanie . Reporter this is a blow to undocumented immigrants everywhere, including the countless here in the bay area. The question is, where exactly does this land them . It means that the deportation will continue as they have been. The Obama Administration brought this to the high court in the first place to try and stop the deportation as the issue worked its way through the lower courts. It would not have offered permanent legal status. It would have given prevention against deportation including 4. 5 million undocumented ildren and parents who were brought into the country under the age of 16. We caught up with the mayor who says its a setback. Sometimes the federal policies have not been modern. This is what the new the current president and the new president will struggle with, is reforming our immigration policy. Probably hundreds of thousands in the bay area were hopeful that they would be able to have protection against deportation, have a work permit, be able to live together as families with more security. Thats very disappointing. Reporter and that Immigration Rights Attorney Says he and his peers in the bay area will work harder to mobilize people in the 2016 president ial election which will have a huge impact on the immigration reform, discussion and debate. Even if the Supreme Court sided with the Obama Administration, it may have been a risk to undocumented immigrants to come out of the shadows, so to speak, because the action could be expanded or changed or overruled by the next congress and Hillary Clinton said she would take the plan even further. Donald trump said he would completely stop it. Hes completely against it. This will likely work its way through the lower courts and work its way back through the ninth circuit court. I want to point out that it is completely independent and there is no bearing on the sanctuary city status here as a result of the Supreme Court 44 vote. Live here in San Francisco, Stephanie Chuang, nbc bay area news. The Supreme Court also held up the texas affirmative action ruling. Affirmative action is Still Necessary and legal but the opinion goes on to say the University Must continue to improve its admission policies. The case centers on Abigail Fisher who claims she was not admitted to the school because shes white. A gunman stormed a german Movie Theater today firing shots and taking several people hostages but no one was hurt except for the gunman shot dead by the german police. There were no other injuries reported in the incident about 45 miles south of frankfurt. Police are still sorting it all out. Now to baltimore where the only officer charged with the death of freddie gray will walk free. A judge found officer Cesar Goodson jr. Not guilty on all seven counts related to grays death last year. Goodson is one of six officers charged in this case. He, though, faced the most serious charges, which were seconddegree murder, manslaughter, seconddegree assault and reckless endangerment. Community leaders say that they are disappointed but hoping for peace in their city. Much more on that verdict and the reality from baltimore coming up in 25 minutes. And just in, an unprecedented sitin by democrats on the house froloor came to an end about 25 hours later. The democrats have their eyes on the november election. Steve handeslman is live in the u. S. Capitol with the latest. Reporter scott and kris, these old walls were shaking today. Rules got broken. The sitin is over. It looks like the u. S. Senate will vote on tougher gun control. Nofly, nobuy, restricting guns making it harder for terrorists to get guns. Even though that vote may take place, it probably will be voted down. House members who sat in know that if they did get a vote, which they probably wont get here on the house side, it will be voted down. Their overriding goal was to raise the issue of tougher gun control in the wake of orlando. c to a real solid Election Year issue. The democrats feel that since all of the polls show that most americans, including republican gun owners, even nra members, want a little tougher gun control. They want background checks, for example, on all gun sales, that this could result in voters waking up and being as active in this area as the minority of nra enthusiasts are and actually result in more democrats being voted in and so john lewis, a civil rights icon who started this sitin as he started many sitins back in the 1960s on civil rights issues, called this a civil rights issue as he declared victory and reminded voters, theres an election coming up. You need to put democrats in office because, after all, they know, the democrats know that if they were in the majority in the house and senate, you wouldnt need sitins. Theyd just have votes. Back to you guys. Steve, thanks very much. We are also on this hour following a developing story out of Southern California where 29,000 gallons of crude oil may have spilled after a pipeline burst in ventura. They are clearly shaken by this case and actually shed some tears in the courtroom as the judge spoke to the defendant juan zarati. He ordered the defendant to not have contact with any animal until the next court date. Police say the groomer, 38yearold of San Francisco, came out of the pet smart grooming office last month holding the dog and explained it was suffering from a medical emergency. This was just minutes after the owner brought the dog henry into the grooming office at the petsmart on el camino real. The dog died minutes later. A postmortem xray shows that the dog suffered two broken ribs and a punctured lung. The dogs injuries were caused by deliberate actions of the defendant.
