So this is what we can expect over the next couple days, some cool mornings. Wont be as cool tomorrow, but heres the change. We do have a very weak and dry cold front dropping in from the north. And it is producing some rain up around oregon, but as it moves into the bay area it will be a dry cold front moving through just helping those winds to pick up and just reinforcing this cool air we already have in place. Its a list of questions, what day of the week it is, theres some task as far as drawing a clock. We didnt have a quick clinical test for it. We needed something very quick. Reporter researchers that support the study say one of its biggest appeals is that anybody can do it and that it can be done at home. All you need is a jar of Peanut Butter and a plastic togo container with a lid. Bees caretaker agreed to let her demonstrate how the test can work. With her eyes and mouth closed bee plugs one nostril. You start at the bottom of the ruler and slowly move up. Yeah, now. Reporter do the test on both nostrils. Her left nostril had a harder time detecting the Peanut Butter because alzheimers starts on the left side of the brain. Her right nostril smelled it earlier because her disease hasnt spread to the right side of her brain yet. Some are praising the simplicity of this study. Its not intrusive. It doesnt mean going in front of a doctor and a bunch of strangers to tell you whats wrong with mom or dad or your loved one. This is something that can be done in a home. Reporter not everyone agrees. Some doctors dispute the study. Researchers at the university of pennsylvania tried it and did not see a difference between the two nostrils. Note to our patients with cars parked in the neighborhood, theres been an increase in car breakins. Take a look what we found at this neighborhood coffee spot. Its one of those things you just get used to. Its shocking at first, but backpacks gone. What are you going to do about it . I know ive had my car broken into. My wifes had her car broken into. Reporter greg sur is also a victim, and the chief in charge of San Franciscos police department. When you say the auto breakin issue has got to epidemic proportions . Yeah. I mean, its certainly the number one property crime issue here in this city. Reporter and the statistics confirm what weve heard from the burglar, the victims and the chief. For the first nine months of this year San Francisco has more than 18,000 reported auto burglaries. A 36 increase from the year before. And remember thats just reported auto burglaries. There are bad guys that have turned this into an industry. Yeah. We have a lot of guys that are repeat offenders. Reporter so the question, which days are auto burglars most active . Nbc bay area crunched the numbers between june and september. We found all seven days were nearly identical, a statistical dead heat. During that fourmonth snapshot we found between 600 and 700 breakins on each of the seven days. We need to present best evidence. And i think the District Attorneys Office needs to aggressively prosecute these guys especially the repeat offenders. Reporter and several other sources point to recent changes in the law as contributors to the growth in breakins. Ab109 moved more career criminals from jail cells to street corners. And prop 47 has made it more difficult for criminals to return to jail. In some cases sources say theyve learned to game the system. I think theres a legislative fix that needs to go into place. This is not a rarity, its happening throughout the bay area. Reporter the Regional Intelligence Center team has analyzed numbers from around the bay area. A few spikes. Over the last six months weve had areas where literally all the burglaries have doubled. Reporter is it a rush . Like, oh, yes. You know, money. Reporter and our auto burglar tells us in San Francisco in many cases its easy money. Usually up to Market Street and on Market Street is where you can sell any kind of items and get your money for it. Reporter hes talking about seventh and market. Cops and criminals say its a wellknown clearinghouse for stolen property. Usually one or two people come up to me and say you got anything for sale. Reporter police say its easy to see. Take a look at what our camera captured one night in less than 15 minutes. Thats a guy with a bag and another guy with a bunch of cash. Give him a head nod. They walk towards over by where the water is and look through it. Give you a price. Reporter money he says he used to get to buy gifts for his girlfriend. Taking advantage of the opportunities created by car owners and changes in the laws. Look into the lens of that camera and tell people at home what they need to know to make sure theyre not a victim. My best advice is to keep all your stuff. When you leave your car, take it with you. A little bit more now about that car burglar. Its his fifth time in jail. Hes 21 years old. He says its his last time at least for now. Now, part of the problem current law says if you steal or if they steal less than 950 its nothing more than a misdemeanor. And by working in tandem car burglars can avoid a felony. One guy breaks the window, a couple minutes later another guy comes along and steals the items. If they get caught both only face misdemeanors. Criminals finding out ways to game the system. Now its onto lawmakers to find a way to make a change. I realize this happens all over the place, but San Francisco in particular has become a quality of life issue where youre reluctant to go out to dinner. Happens to tourists all the time as well. No matter what i think this is something ed lee going to have to crack down on. You bring up two good points. On the tourists, yeah, we have learned that car burglars are often targeting rental vehicles. They will look for the little bar code in the window that says its a rental vehicle. Because they know theyre likely to have luggage in the back. Puts those people at risk. Obviously doesnt work well for all bay area and leaves them with a bad taste. And the other side is we talk to people in San Francisco. One guy said i went a year and a half without getting my car broken into. I consider that a victory. Thats kind of what its come to. Its that bad that you expect a cost of living there, a car burglary once every 18 months. Told us what to do, dont leave your stuff in the car. The police have told us. Maybe well listen now that the burglar has told us. Kris, its a valid point to bring home. Because people know, everybody said to me those things are obvious. Well, if they were obvious then everybody would do them and maybe weve all done it. You work with the numbers up more than 100 in several places in the bay area. 36 up in San Francisco. And those numbers were actually up about 70 before the chief started cracking down. So its obvious, but people are making it easy because if its in eyesight, youre going to lose a window or some items. Thank you. Well, if you have a tip for our Investigative Unit, give us a call at 88899 6tips or send an email to theunit nbcbayarea. Com. But some good information though. As we take a live look at sunol we see clear blue skies. Yes, it is a nice dry day. But we do have some more rain coming our way. Looking now at San Francisco gorgeous shot there as our temperatures warm up becoming a little bit more comfortable. But this is where we started today. It was 41 degrees in sunnyvale and san jose. In concord it was 40 degrees. And look at napa. 31 degrees. Santa rosa also dipped below freezing, the coldest temperature in petaluma. Its in the mid to upper 50s now. Look how quickly weve warmed in the north bay. Petaluma was at 40 and now its 60. Were also feeling 60s in napa and other parts of the north bay the temperatures will warm a few more degrees. High of 62 in los gatos, 64 degrees in the castro at 62 degrees. North bay 67 in santa rosa while oakland sees a high of 64. And livermore 65 degrees. So 60s today. More cool mornings. Well see those 60s for the next few days. Maybe even hitting some low 70s. But there will be a dry cold front moving in. This will not bring much of a change in our weather, just increasing the winds and reinforcing that cool air. And then by sunday well have another front moving in. This one looks wet. And it could bring quite a bit of rain as some of the initial runs of the computer models give us at least a quarter of an inch as we head into sunday as well as monday. So how are we doing on rain so far . Weve had close to over 0. 75 so far this month in San Francisco. Thats about a tenth of an inch above average. And the Monthly Average we should get about 2. 38, but we are still lacking a lot for the year. So hopefully we continue to drop more rain in the bucket. And looking at the san jose rainfall totals weve had an inch and 1. 6 inches, which is about an inch above normal. But we are making it closer to that Monthly Average. We do have a lot of month to go, so hopefully we do get that and then some as we try to catch up and get a little bit more as we are lacking over six inches of rain in this drought.
