She was on the first leg of a u. S. Backpacking tour alone. Her body was found last saturday morning in Golden Gate Park facedown, a gunshot wound in a wooded area. Enough similarities to a marin murder that would happen two days later to involve san Francisco Police inspectors. After we learned of their homicide and the similarities between the two both are in outdoor areas, ones on a trail, ones at Golden Gate Park, we started working closely with the marin county sheriffs office. When the arrest was made and we are working with marin county sheriff our investigators from San Francisco immediately went to portland, oregon to also continue our homicide investigation. Reporter san Francisco Police confirm personal items from audrey carey were found in the car the three suspects believe to have driven to portland. Suspects are identified as 24yearold sean michael angold, 18yearold lila allgood and morrison lampley. The car belonged to steve carter fatally shot monday on a hiking trail near fairfax in marin county. Police are not specify which items of careys were found in the car saying inspectors want to withhold that information until they interrogate the three suspects individually. No, thats what ive been doing sitting there just looking at the camera because its just been going back and forth. The weather is just so beautiful for all of the events going on. Heres a look now from mt. Hamilton looking towards san jose. All clear across the bay with all of that sunshine. Look at these temperatures now starting to heat up inland. In the east bay it is 79 degrees. And in the south bay at 74 degrees. As we get a closer look at San Francisco youre going to have a wide span of temperatures anywhere from the western parts of the city where its in the lower 60s. You head over to the embarcadero now its at 70 degrees. So those temperatures will continue to go up. Now in the north bay it is 68 degrees. A look at all the microclimates highs today up to 96 degrees today in gilroy. Inland areas really have to take it easy, drink lots of water. Dont forget that sunscreen with all of the sun beating down. It will be 86 degrees today in palo alto. And 80 degrees today in burnell heights as temperatures continue to rise. Santa rosa up to 92 today. Brentwood 893 and oakland 84. And 90 for today in san ramon. Look at fleet week forecast we have the parade of the ships going on now and temperatures will be rising into the mid70s. And tomorrow the air show low 70s also on sunday columbus day you can tour those ships. It will be 78 degrees. Now as you head out to the beach to see the air show, maybe you want to do a little swimming, keep in mind that we will have a rip current risk tomorrow because we will have some long periods swells coming from the south and southwest all because of a weakening tropical system way out to sea. And it will make things a lot more choppy. So be ware of rip currents and also keep an eye on the family, friends and also the pets. Into the next couple of days we are looking to see if were going to have a chance of rain. And it looks like the models arent picking up on anything until maybe the end of next week. So looking a little bit promising now. But until then it is going to be hot and dry. Our temperatures well above average. I mean, just take a look at los gatos for example. And the average high this time of year for early october is 78 degrees. We are not even close to that. Were talking 90 today, 89 tomorrow and many days it will be at least ten degrees above average. And a look at all the microclimates it will be very warm. In the trivalley 92 degrees, up to 94 on monday. San francisco stays in the low 70s, up to 78 degrees on monday. A busy stetch of east bay highway will be closed to cars. So people can hike, bike, ro a busy stretch of east bay highway will be closed to cars so that people can put it in park, hike, bike, stroll, maybe even ride a horse. That stretch of highway 84 between fremont and sunol will be closed to traffic for much of the day for the niles canyon stroll and ride. Heres the area were talking about. Highway 84 between old canyon road in fremont and main street in sunol. So lace up your sneakers because you have until 4 00 this afternoon to put the car in park and get out and stretch your legs. This marks the end of a Feasibility Study about building a tenfoot wide trail for walkers, riders, again maybe even horseback riders through the canyon. That project would cost between 57 million and 69 million. Well, turns out a runners high is an actual high. German scientists found the feeling you get from a good card cardiowork outcomes from something called an endocanabanoid. They act the same as the chemical in marijuana giving you an easy going feeling. Scientists say that runners high helps keep you calm and blocks pain. Heres a picture of that 50yearold vet and his injury. He says this happened during fleet week of last year. And nbc bay areas kim yokanaka has more. Reporter it was during fleet week last year when 50yearold sean mace lay bleeding after being knocked unconscious by a large seed pod similar to this one. The impact was so tremendous that it resulted in immediate swelling and hemorrhaging of his brain. To reduce that pressure they had to remove a portion of skull. Reporter mace says since being hit he suffers from memory loss and depression. His Attorney Says he cant hold down a job and has hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. Today the grove of trees that mace was under is fenced off and warning signs posted. The trees are known as bunya pine or Monkey Puzzle trees. Not indigenous here but common in australia. No one seems to know how they got here, only that theyve been here for decades. The trees have been there. People know that theyre there. It was a freak accident. Youre taking chances under a lot of different trees especially in the drought. Reporter this type of tree can produce seed pods up to 35 sent meters in diameter and weighing as much as 40 pounds. The one that hit mace was equivalent to the weight of a bowling ball. He is now suing the park service and wants something done before anyone else is injured. At a bare, bare minimum i think the park owed a duty of care to all visitors including mr. Mace to warn of this known danger including posting signage around the grove of trees advising of the risk of falling seed pods. Nbc bay area news. Reporter a spectacular viewpoint in the presid owe for watching blue angels or gazing at the Golden Gate Bridge is surrounded by a chain link fence. But with the tunnels on doyle drive complete, the Presidio Trust is making plans to turn this construction site into a park. For 75 years the presidio was kind of split in two by the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge. Everybody knows a couple months ago it reopened. And there are these two sets of tunnels. Well, the beautiful thing is theres going to be parkland right over the top of it. Reporter the trust revealed the newest plans for the 14acre park tonight, land that will join the main post and chris field. Its a jewel. Reporter cant wait for opening day. He has some ideas about how to make it picture perfect. I think i would just let grove with vegetation and not impose anything on it because anything you do is going to cost you money to maintain. Reporter its a 51 million project funded by donations. The trust has raised 35 million so far. Landscape architect jim horner has a lot of people to please. And the more grants you plant, the less i feel presidio. I would argue that we still sort of need those. Those are opportunities for people to throw down a picnic cloth. Reporter there are plans to remove a building, to improve the view and there are questions about the need for bathrooms and separating bikes and pedestrians. Palo alto is making a bold move installing dozens of cameras, but also sparking some privacy concerns. Nbc bay areas peggy bunker shows us why the city wants those cameras up. Reporter look just about anywhere on a busy city street and youre likely to find a camera of some kind recording your every move, which is why palo altos decision to install 45 new cameras on utility poles has Even City Council members alarmed. I certainly have some concerns. Reporter 45 low resolution cameras were approved by the Palo Alto City Council on monday in an effort to improve bike and pedestrian lanes and get people out of their cars. The efforts to educate people on getting out of their cars start really young. Reporter the city transportation manager says the cameras shoot at such low resolution classifying them as traditional cameras is a bit of a stretch. The technology will essentially count how many people are using certain routes. Its a counter. So its taking information about the top of your head as it goes this way on a bike. Or walking. And it kind of converts that image into a blue dot going that way or blue dot going that way. Reporter Council Members were initially concerned about privacy issues until they learned more about the technology. The type of cameras being used is very low resolution so they would not be able to identify an individual. Reporter the citys contacted the camera vendor also says none of the cameras collected images can be shared or stored. You dont want to bike on the sidewalk. You want to bike in a bike lane. Well, one of the most common complaints youll hear from anyone who flies theres just not enough overhead bin space to carry all those humongous carryon bags. They all fit, right . Reporter on a 737 800, the expanded bin space will increase the number of bags that can fit overhead from 118 to 178. 60 more standard size bags. Of course not all bags are standard. They come in all shapes and sizes. But within two years nearly half of Alaska Airlines fleet will be fitted with the largers bins. Customers told us they have a lot of anxiety whether or not they can fit that bag on the plane. So by providing bin space it alleviates that anxiety. World and its plan to expand its signature killer whale a partial victory for sea world and its plan to expand its signature killer whale program. Yesterday the states Coastal Commission approved sea worlds proposed 100 million expansion of its orca tanks. At the same time commissioners blocked sea world from future breeding of those whales. That decision came after a packed hearing where people on both sides argued their cases including celebrity Pamela Anderson who opposes sea worlds plan. Sea world is clinging desperately to the past. Before people understood these intelligent animals, people know and love them and want to protect them. That is in no small part due to the work of sea world. The expansion will replace two existing orca facilities with larger tanks. One containing more than 5 million gallons of water. Officer Jason Johnson grew up in the east bay city of pittsburg facing he admits a lot of challenges. He didnt have many positive role models. He swore if he ever got the chance hed be that for other kids. Its a promise hes going to Great Lengths to deliver on. When he first joined the force seven years ago, san Francisco Police officer Jason Johnson just like every rookie went through a probationary period. His was just about over when his captain conducted certainly the shortest Job Interview jason had ever been a part of. Hes like what do you like to do . I said i like kids. Hes like, really . I said yeah. Reporter turns out there was a Community Policing spot open at the willie mays boys and girls club. Jason agreed to try it for a month. But came back to his captain the very next day. Said you were there one day. I said i know this is where i want to be. Reporter jason, or officer j. J. As the kids call him, is now a fixture in their lives. Not just at the club but checking in on them at school or organizing a basketball tournament for them at a local church. Anything to keep kids on the right path. A lot of the kids that i deal with on a daily basis theyre on the fence. They can turn bad. They can turn good. And they just need the direction. Whats up with you acting out yesterday . Reporter jason says from that very first day he knew working with the work of the bay view was what he was destined to do. Jason just never knew how far that would take all of them. To africa, ghana to be exact. Two years ago jason started operation genesis, a weeklong trip to ghana for a handful of bay view youth. He got the idea from a childhood friend who had moved to africa and suggested it would be a powerful experience for the kids. They all have this image or this definition of what being black is. I say, okay, you think thats being black, lets go see what originally what it was like being black. Reporter jason says the impact has been remarkable. Students came back from that first trip more dedicated to their school work, their families and their futures. It was phenomenal. The results was phenomenal. We said we got to keep it going. Reporter and that is just what jason has been doing. Not just planning the next trip but expanding the ways he can work with the kids back at home improving their plans for the future while solidifying his. This is absolutely the beginning. Just the beginning. And plans are already in the works for the next, the third trip to africa for operation genesis. This time theyll be taking more kids and staying even longer. But youll need to take it easy in some spots because it will be hot and sunny. And of course we know we are outside for long periods of time you can get dehydrated. So looking now all across the bay its right at about 70 degrees in the east bay, peninsula 76. And 74 degrees in the south bay. But were not done yet. Well see those highs topping out in the 80s and 90s. And of course the hot spot will be in the trivalley up to 96 degrees today. We have much of a northerly wind. We will see that as we go into the afternoon. Our winds picking up about 10 to 15 miles an hour. So wind direction coming in from the north. Well have swells coming in from the south that just has rip currents written all over it. So you want to be careful if youre going to the beach to try to cool off over the next couple of days. Now the microclimate show temperatures are in the upper 70s for the south bay and east bay. And the north bays at 71 degrees as we get a closer look were anywhere from 75 degrees in napa and 74 degrees in santa rosa to bo dega bay at 76 degrees. Im guessing thats a little farther inland. Taking a look at fleet week weather, it is going to be a nice one. Were not going to have to worry about the cloudy skies, the low clouds blocking the view of the air show which happens tomorrow as well as sunday. And columbus day youll be able to tour the ships, but it will be up to 78 degrees. Heading to pumpkins in the park in san jose, its at guadeloupe river park. At 10 00 it will be at 76 degrees, warming into the mid80s by the afternoon. And life is living happening in oakland. We start out at 10 00 in the morning at 67 degrees. Bright sunshine all throughout the day warming up into the low 80s by early afternoon. And at 7 00 sun setting it will be at 70 degrees. Next chance of rain unfortunately doesnt look like it will be for a while. Weve been just keeping an eye on this possibility of some rain towards the end of next week. So in the meantime we have temperatures that are well above average for this time of year. And we will keep that as we go into the start of next week. Upper 80s tomorrow in the south bay. Peninsula 80 degrees. San francisco 73. And the east bay into the lower 80s. The trivalley will be up to 94 degrees heading into monday.
