Turner Construction Company was picked to build it. But millions of dollars have been wasted and the county is losing 100,000 a day in lost revenue. Work records we with obtained show the original project contract was about 291 million. Turner requested another 6 million and then 9 million. They agreed to other change orders as well. Heres what the project looks like today. Two weeks before it is supposed to open. Unfinished rooms and no beds. Im very disappointed. The project is not where it should be for this building. This is a patient room. Intensive care unit bed. As you can see from top to bottom, the room is nowhere near completion. In fact, county Officials Say the september 19th opening will be impossible to meet. And in fact, say it could take two or three years to make up time and solve problems including a rain damaged roof. We expect to have a new roof as opposed to a patched roof. Building an entire floor to specs not a approved by the state. County executive smith said officials tolerated early delays because of their reputation for completing big problems. Turner was working on lee is vie stadium at the same time. Now smith says he believes Turner Construction became preoccupied with levi at the expense of the hospital project. Well, we noticed when levis stadium offered an incentive to finish quickly, suddenly a lot of our subcontractors left. So they redirected them to the levis stadium. Officials agreed to talk to us because the delays prevent them from delivering much needed services. The rehabilitation unit was supposed to move into the new building. Instead, the county has had to turn away patients because of the current facilitys limited capacity. The new building was also supposed to house an expansion of the burn unit and maternity department. Today a spokesman for Turner Construction said it was wrong to plame the Construction Company for all the delays and say it is not supported by the facts. He would the county accepted responsibility for many of the problems. But county executive smith is not swayed and said county has already put Turner Construction on notice. Come up with a better explanation in seven days or lose the project. We cant afford to waste tax payer dollars. We cant afford to have a company who is playing games in charge of the scheduling. So the county could fire turner within a week. Right. Things may not on remain up in the air for very long. I woke up and looked outside at 7 30 and noticed people were on the roof. There was a crew of 20 on the roof and donations for 50 waiting for them on the ground. They came from across the bay and down the street. Almost none of them knowing david before this morning. They just wanted to help a a neighbor help his neighbor. A roofer with 18 Years Experience brought his son with him all the way from tracy. Youve got to show him the values of life too. And in the middle of it all watching it all, a little stunned, was the home owner, richard du beale. He said he had been losing faith in his fellow man over the years.
