office confirming they have found the body of a baby. there's no official confirmation whether or not it's that of justice rees the newborn boy who disappeared with his mom. but we know his family believes this is the case. they are on the scene, being comforted by a police chaplain. a a yolo sheriff marine patrol found the baby next to the town of knight's landing, which is north of woodland where the boy lived with his mother. this has been provided by our own jodi hernandez. this is located where searchers had been looking all night. the yolo county sheriff's office is not calling them a homicide right now, just a death investigation. a captain with the sheriff's office saying quote, this is something you just can't wrap your mind around. now, the family reported the boy and his mother reporting missing yesterday. the sacramento bee reports in the evening, the boy's mother 23-year-old samantha green, who you can see on the screen called 911 in a panic. law enforcement found her by the same slew but without her baby boy. she was distraught disheveled with cuts and abrasions consistent with somebody who had been wandering in the slew. she has been in the hospital since for treatment and evaluation. woodland police are trying to figure out why she ended eded unin night's landing since she doesn't have links to the area. samantha green's sister posted a message on her facebook page that reads in part quote, our family is asking for privacy at this time, and we will not be answering questions unless necessary. i have seen some very upsetting comments circulating as well as many assumptions, and it's only making things harder end quote. it should be noted that message was posted before the searchers reported finding the body of a baby. >> all right. three-week baby boy. thank you so much. >> new details phau in a high speed chase in the bay area. several police agencies across the state now investigating whether the four suspects in this case are connected to a string of other crimes. it ended in martinez this morning. the chp said just before 3:00 the officers threw down a spike strip to stop the suspect's car. the driver exited just south of the vunesia bridge and then crashed into a fence. this video shows one woman surrendering to police. the chp arrested two others as they tried to flee, and then officers arrested a fourth suspect after homeowners came face-to-face with them in their house. a neighbor says there was a lot of chaos this morning. >> 6:00 a.m. i saw a lot of flashing lights came out front, and encountered a few officers. they told me there was a suspect on the loose, armed and dangerous, and i should stay inside, lock all the doors. i have children here and so yeah pretty scary, definitely. and concern for my neighbors. to think that someone was over there in their property. >> as if the flashing lights and sirens weren't enough he also said the dogs were barking in their kennels on the property. the chp not confirming whether the suspects were armed or whether they found weapons that were confiscated. >> punched, kicked and stiffed. police hope you can solve the crime against a san francisco cab driver. cameras capture the attack. there's the man there, happened on valentine's day. video released last night. driver picks up a man in san francisco. drops him off in daly city. you can see the passenger got out of the car. he apparently refused to pay. when the driver confronted him, the suspect punched and kicked him and ran off. >> a judge will consider setting a trial date for the man accused of killing sierra lamar. torres pleaded not guilty to charges he kidnapped and killed the 15-year-old in 2012. they found lamar's hair on a robe inside torres' trunk, and her dna showed up on clothes on his body. >> a man accused of a triple stabbing in san jose is expected to answer to charges today. in may of 2013 reuben ramirez killed his own mother and 1-year-old nephew. he also stabbed his 3-year-old niece, but she survived. family members say ramirez has a history of mental trouble. >> well, a lot quieter in one san jose neighbor this morning after police shut down an illegal gambling and prostitution ring. locals had been complaining about stranges coming and going add all hours in the evergreen area. yesterday, police arrested four at a home after finding illegal evidence of gaming illegal gaming, drug dealing, stolen vehicles, prostitution, and identity theft. that led them to this nearby convenience store where they say they found nine illegal gaming machines. >> southwest flights are starting to get back to normal. the airline had cancelled dozens of flight over the last 24 hours for failing to inspect their planes. there were no issues at mineta san jose or sfo, but oakland saw five cancellations this morning so the planes could be inspected. southwest reached an agreement with the faa allowing it to put all its planes in service so long as the inspections are complete in the next five days. >> the driver of a pickup truck accused in the train accident is under arrest. federal investigators determine his truck left on the rail tracks wasn't stuck lie they first thought. >> 28 people were hurt in yesterday's derailment, but officials say it could have been much worse. miguel has the latest. >> fire on the rails. an explosive people expressed privacy concerns. germs are not only an issue in the bay area. france had a problem of its own related to drones. coming up in about 30 minutes, concerns about drones flying over famous parisian landmarks. >> and san francisco's archbishop is rethinking his policy over requiring morality clauses for teachers at four local catholic schools. the chronicle reports the archbishop is re-examining the strict guidelines. they prohibit birth control and allowing sexual relationships only within the confines of a heterosexual marriage. they sparked outrage after added to a new faculty hand book. >> friends and family are mourning a bay area journalist. dory mainer died of lung cancer. she worked at the detroit free press and the bakersfield californiaen. she became the 11:00 comes right back. the staples guys get very excited, and staples ladies. the markets have been fairly quiet today. a company out of holland which makes sim cards, the little chips you put in your cell phones, confirms it was hacked. the guardian newspaper quotes nsa whistle blower edward snowden is saying the u.s. and british governments are behind the hacking. the company agrees saying it was indeed hacks and it suspects the americans but say the governments were not able to steal any data. >> the head of the nsa was at a conference earlier this week when he was asked about the hack. he said he could not confirm or deny the report but says the u.s. stayed within the law. now, at that same conference, the head of the nsa was challenged in public by the head of security from yahoo over the hacking of silicon valley companies by the u.s. government. now, as best i can figure out, not a shred of video exists of the question and answer session, but it was angry. all we have are transcripts, but i bring this up because silicon valley versus washington is a problem. the two sides are more angry at each other than they let on. yahoo, by the way, has become a leader in the fight against washington. it's carefully and respectfully fought the government over a number of privacy issues, and we have noted in the past, the ceo marissa mayer was invited to the cybersecurity conference at stanford and turned the invitation down. it would appear the fcc is going to vote on net neutrality tomorrow. republicans leaders said they don't have the votes to stop it. republicans are against net neutrality but they don't like the way the obama administration is going about it. what will fcc commissioners being voting on tomorrow? we know the basics, but weirdly enough we don't know the details. the commissioners have been given a briefing paper but the public doesn't. >> we count on guys like you to make it simple once it does come out. >> once we know what we're talking about. >> the new port labor deal here in oakland may be too little too late when it comes to california fruit and nut farmers. the l.a. times reports it may take three months to clear that cargo backlog. losses for some exports may reach 50%. case in point, california grown citrus bound for chinese new year celebrations overseas and california almond farmers fear that foreign buyers will now cancel the delayed orders due to the backlog. say nothing of all the produce that's just going to spoil in that time. >> loss altose city leaders could ban development on one of the city's main streets. the city attorney is drafted a 45 day moratorium banning new projects along first street between san antonio road and edith avenue. city council would have the opportunity to extand the ban up to a year. city leaders want to make sure the downtown area is developed in a way that sticks with the image. >> menlo park could get taxpayer money to pay for a new luxury boutique hotel downtown. the mercury news reports the city is open to the idea of helping to fund a four-star hotel. city leaders expect the hotel to bring business into the downtown area and produce more than $8 million in room taxes over ten years. no word yet on how much the city is willing to put out. >> the supreme court will hear arguments this morning from the lawyers of a muslim woman denied a job at abercrombie and fitch because of her wardrobe. she said she was recommended for hiring only to lose the decision because of her job. aber fromrercrombie stated the look policy. they said what states they must take. >> a pet food giant is defending itself against a claim that its food is toxic. that suit claims beneful contains toxins that can be deadly to dogs. a pet owner filed suit alleging his three dogs all became sick. one of them died after theyate beneful exclusively. nestle purina called the suit baseless. it also says courts have tossed out two similar lawsuits in the past. >> well, how about this? these are not your ordinary cable guys. >> two u.s. ostastronauts trading in their gear for hard hats. they just finished a 6 1/2 hour space walk installing data and power cables on the exterior of the international space station. the installation is considered to be one of the most complicated cable jobs ever undertaken at the 16-year-old orbiting outpost. the astronauts will need a third space walk to finish the job, but they'll be back out on the job sunday. we understand they'll make their window. >> look at that. a house blown to bits caught on a dashboard video camera. is our last day of complete sunshine. by tomorrow afternoon, clouds increase. as a weathermaker starts to move onshore. it's still chilly out there. if you're headed out and about although the sun is warming things out nicely temperatures are mostly in the upper 50s and we'll end up in the upper 60s later on today. 69 in the tri-valley. 65 in san francisco. and 70 degrees in the north bay today. so your weather headlines tell the story, warm afternoon sunshine, a little more cloud cover later on tonight. that fog will roll back in, and then we're really going to see the clouds increase by the end of the day on thursday. cool and damp into the weekend. so if you want the sunshine, you've got today, most of tomorrow, and then things start to change. and it's not just one weathermaker we're watching. we have a couple. but from the first one that comes through on friday into saturday some pretty decent looking rainfall totals. we were originally not forecasting anything measurable but right now, some of the models are showing us about a tenth of an inch in morgan hill. .05 for san jose and maybe up to a tenth of an inch in ukiah. the good flews is the hillsides are so pretty and green, and this re-enforcing shot of shower activity will keep it that way, at least for a while. really love the way the bay area looks. we the to wait for that to happen. let meet give you the timing of the next two systems. we stop the clock for you, move you forward in time friday at about 1:00 showers working through the bay area. we continue to advance the future cast. stop it at saturday at 9:00 p.m., and looking good for rain showers. if you want to make outdoor plans, it's going to be damp on saturday. so sunday is your day to do so. if you can, get out there. by monday the rainfall returns. by 4:00 that will continue into tuesday. and we should get a pretty good break as of wednesday, but overall, i'm looking as far out as i can when it comes to the extended future cast you about the story of sam acacia coworkers found him lying on the ground and bleeding from his head. no one saw what happened but dispatch reports show up to 53 minutes may have passed before anyone called 911. for years, the policy at the oakland facility said only postal police are allowed to initiate the 911 procedure. now, though it says in an emergency anyone who can call 911 should. >> if insan tay defense, a texas jury found eddie ray routh guilty in the murders of american sniper chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield. the verdict came after less than three hours of deliberation. city is wondering whether there's another threat. >> bill neely reports from paris. >> for the last two nights, police have spotted mystery drones over five landmark locations. first over the american embassy. then at the plaza concord, the eiffel tower, the military museum, and finally over the pastille. police couldn't tell if it was one or multiple drones or who the controller was, and they couldn't bring one down. there have never been so many sightings two nights running. >> it can be used for surveillance, and they can be used in propaganda films. that's a real concern. >> in recent weeks, mystery drones have buzzed the presidential palace, nuclear pants, and military basis. in a country fearful of terrorism after last month's attacks in paris that left 17 people dead, and it's not just paris that's worried. last month in washington a drone flew above the white house and crashed into the lawn. >> the biggest risk in a drone is you would pack it with explosives with a detonating device and ride it into a large group of people. >> paris is still on the highest security alert after more threats by islamists to target the city. the unexplained drones are raising tensions further. now, you might think there must be an innocent explanation for all of this. it can't be serious, and that may well be the case but the police here are taking this very seriously, and not a hand out. many people believe the best way to help people is to teach them to help themselves. >> how do you go about doing that? one south bay nonprofit thinks they have a successful working model growing at a rapid rate. garvin thomas is here with today's bay area proud. >> janice barren as you'll learn in a moment, started sunday friends 18 years ago. but three years ago, the nonprofit hired a successful tech executive to take over. their budget has grown five-fold in the time and they think the community they're creating others will want to be a part of. >> i interact with the kids i ask them what are you doing this summer. >> a funny thing about trying to teach someone a lesson. >> if they say nothing, i don't know -- >> that every once in a while you learn one yourself. >> this year i really want to turn that around. >> it happened to janice 18 years ago. when a lesson she hopes to teach her children revealed to her a new way to help those in need of a hand. something she now calls sunday friends. >> it's a combination of learning and service. you know, all in interwoven together. >> it was in 1997 that janice a lifelong volunteer, took her three teenagers to a local homeless shelter to teach them about giving back. janice and her kids tried engaging the homeless children with games and crafts with limited success. but then looking around the trash filled property janice had an idea. >> i turned to the child next to me and i said i'll give you a sticker for each ten pieces of trash you pick up and count into the trash can. i must have been overheard because immediately all these kids came running. they wanted to know how many pieces do we have to pick up to earn a whole sheet of stickers. that was the formative moment the birth of sunday friends. >> our day starts with families -- >> what was born then has not stopped growing. now at three san jose locations, sunday friends works with hundreds of low income families a year. the stickers now gone replaced by tickets. parents and their children earn the tickets any number of ways participating in glass, writing letters of thanks to donors. working on projects that benefit other nonprofits. the list goes on. at the end of the day, those tickets are redeemable in a store for the things families both need and want. the secret to all of this is that while earning, the families are learning about parenting, about health and perhaps most importantly, self-reliance. >> we work together side by side as equals to give back to the community. so there's that sense of respect. we don't praise them for doing well. we thank them for contributing. >> we are not just impacting low income. we also impact volunteers. >> for 25 years, ali was a silicon valley tech executive. he learned about combined we're looking toward some decent rainfall totals. .25 inch in napa santa rosa closer to a half inch. areas to the north, and then in the south bay, i don't think we'll see a lot of rabe but maybe .1 inch. that will keep the hill sides nice and moist. getting into the next couple days, staying nice today, sunday, want to make indoor plans. you'll be able to get out there without heavy office confirming they have found the body of a baby. there's no official confirmation whether or not it's that of justice rees the newborn boy who disappeared with his mom. but we know his family believes this is the case. they are on the scene, being comforted by a police chaplain. a a yolo sheriff marine patrol found the baby next to the town of knight's landing, which is north of woodland where the boy lived with his mother. this has been provided by our own jodi hernandez. this is located where searchers had been looking all night. the yolo county sheriff's office is not calling them a homicide right now, just a death investigation. a captain with the sheriff's office saying quote, this is something you just can't wrap your mind around. now, the family reported the boy and his mother reporting missing yesterday. the sacramento bee reports in the evening, the boy's mother 23-year-old samantha green, who you can see on the screen called 911 in a panic. law enforcement found her by the same slew but without her baby boy. she was distraught disheveled with cuts and abrasions consistent with somebody who had been wandering in the slew. she has been in the hospital since for treatment and evaluation. woodland police are trying to figure out why she ended eded unin night's landing since she doesn't have links to the area. samantha green's sister posted a message on her facebook page that reads in part quote, our family is asking for privacy at this time, and we will not be answering questions unless necessary. i have seen some very upsetting comments circulating as well as many assumptions, and it's only making things harder end quote. it should be noted that message was posted before the searchers reported finding the body of a baby. >> all right. three-week baby boy. thank you so much. >> new details phau in a high speed chase in the bay area. several police agencies across the state now investigating whether the four suspects in this case are connected to a string of other crimes. it ended in martinez this morning. the chp said just before 3:00 the officers threw down a spike strip to stop the suspect's car. the driver exited just south of the vunesia bridge and then crashed into a fence. this video shows one woman surrendering to police. the chp arrested two others as they tried to flee, and then officers arrested a fourth suspect after homeowners came face-to-face with them in their house. a neighbor says there was a lot of chaos this morning. >> 6:00 a.m. i saw a lot of flashing lights came out front, and encountered a few officers. they told me there was a suspect on the loose, armed and dangerous, and i should stay inside, lock all the doors. i have children here and so yeah pretty scary, definitely. and concern for my neighbors. to think that someone was over there in their property. >> as if the flashing lights and sirens weren't enough he also said the dogs were barking in their kennels on the property. the chp not confirming whether the suspects were armed or whether they found weapons that were confiscated. >> punched, kicked and stiffed. police hope you can solve the crime against a san francisco cab driver. cameras capture the attack. there's the man there, happened on valentine's day. video released last night. driver picks up a man in san francisco. drops him off in daly city. you can see the passenger got out of the car. he apparently refused to pay. when the driver confronted him, the suspect punched and kicked him and ran off. >> a judge will consider setting a trial date for the man accused of killing sierra lamar. torres pleaded not guilty to charges he kidnapped and killed the 15-year-old in 2012. they found lamar's hair on a robe inside torres' trunk, and her dna showed up on clothes on his body. >> a man accused of a triple stabbing in san jose is expected to answer to charges today. in may of 2013 reuben ramirez killed his own mother and 1-year-old nephew. he also stabbed his 3-year-old niece, but she survived. family members say ramirez has a history of mental trouble. >> well, a lot quieter in one san jose neighbor this morning after police shut down an illegal gambling and prostitution ring. locals had been complaining about stranges coming and going add all hours in the evergreen area. yesterday, police arrested four at a home after finding illegal evidence of gaming illegal gaming, drug dealing, stolen vehicles, prostitution, and identity theft. that led them to this nearby convenience store where they say they found nine illegal gaming machines. >> southwest flights are starting to get back to normal. the airline had cancelled dozens of flight over the last 24 hours for failing to inspect their planes. there were no issues at mineta san jose or sfo, but oakland saw five cancellations this morning so the planes could be inspected. southwest reached an agreement with the faa allowing it to put all its planes in service so long as the inspections are complete in the next five days. >> the driver of a pickup truck accused in the train accident is under arrest. federal investigators determine his truck left on the rail tracks wasn't stuck lie they first thought. >> 28 people were hurt in yesterday's derailment, but officials say it could have been much worse. miguel has the latest. >> fire on the rails. an explosive collision during the morning commute into los angeles. >> a metro link train plowing head on into a pickup truck hauling a trailer at a rail crossing. >> the truck exploded right outside the window. anytime soon. they placed a one-year moratorium on drone use by the berkeley police department. that gives the council time to write up a policy for officers. >> government use of drones and the potential misuse of drones to invade the privacy of the public especially in terms of surveillance. >> it's going to be harder to regulate drones. once the sky is more flooded with them. they're here now, but there will be more soon. this is a perfect opportunity. >> berkeley is one of many bay area cities debating the eyes in the sky. the san jose police department grounded its aerial camera when people expressed privacy concerns. germs are not only an issue in the bay area. france had a problem of its own related to drones. coming up in about 30 minutes, concerns about drones flying over famous parisian landmarks. >> and san francisco's archbishop is rethinking his policy over requiring morality clauses for teachers at four local catholic schools. the chronicle reports the archbishop is re-examining the strict guidelines. they prohibit birth control and allowing sexual relationships only within the confines of a heterosexual marriage. they sparked outrage after added to a new faculty hand book. >> friends and family are mourning a bay area journalist. dory mainer died of lung cancer. she worked at the detroit free press and the bakersfield californiaen. she became the 11:00 comes right back. the staples guys get very excited, and staples ladies. the markets have been fairly quiet today. a company out of holland which makes sim cards, the little chips you put in your cell phones, confirms it was hacked. the guardian newspaper quotes nsa whistle blower edward snowden is saying the u.s. and british governments are behind the hacking. the company agrees saying it was indeed hacks and it suspects the americans but say the governments were not able to steal any data. >> the head of the nsa was at a conference earlier this week when he was asked about the hack. he said he could not confirm or deny the report but says the u.s. stayed within the law. now, at that same conference, the head of the nsa was challenged in public by the head of security from yahoo over the hacking of silicon valley companies by the u.s. government. now, as best i can figure out, not a shred of video exists of the question and answer session, but it was angry. all we have are transcripts, but i bring this up because silicon valley versus washington is a problem. the two sides are more angry at each other than they let on. yahoo, by the way, has become a leader in the fight against washington. it's carefully and respectfully fought the government over a number of privacy issues, and we have noted in the past, the ceo marissa mayer was invited to the cybersecurity conference at stanford and turned the invitation down. it would appear the fcc is going to vote on net neutrality tomorrow. republicans leaders said they don't have the votes to stop it. republicans are against net neutrality but they don't like the way the obama administration is going about it. what will fcc commissioners being voting on tomorrow? we know the basics, but weirdly enough we don't know the details. the commissioners have been given a briefing paper but the public doesn't. >> we count on guys like you to make it simple once it does come out. >> once we know what we're talking about. >> the new port labor deal here in oakland may be too little too late when it comes to california fruit and nut farmers. the l.a. times reports it may take three months to clear that cargo backlog. losses for some exports may reach 50%. case in point, california grown citrus bound for chinese new year celebrations overseas and california almond farmers fear that foreign buyers will now cancel the delayed orders due to the backlog. say nothing of all the produce that's just going to spoil in that time. >> loss altose city leaders could ban development on one of the city's main streets. the city attorney is drafted a 45 day moratorium banning new projects along first street between san antonio road and edith avenue. city council would have the opportunity to extand the ban up to a year. city leaders want to make sure the downtown area is developed in a way that sticks with the image. >> menlo park could get taxpayer money to pay for a new luxury boutique hotel downtown. the mercury news reports the city is open to the idea of helping to fund a four-star hotel. city leaders expect the hotel to bring business into the downtown area and produce more than $8 million in room taxes over ten years. no word yet on how much the city is willing to put out. >> the supreme court will hear arguments this morning from the lawyers of a muslim woman denied a job at abercrombie and fitch because of her wardrobe. she said she was recommended for hiring only to lose the decision because of her job. aber fromrercrombie stated the look policy. they said what states they must take. >> a pet food giant is defending itself against a claim that its food is toxic. that suit claims beneful contains toxins that can be deadly to dogs. a pet owner filed suit alleging his three dogs all became sick. one of them died after theyate beneful exclusively. nestle purina called the suit baseless. it also says courts have tossed out two similar lawsuits in the past. >> well, how about this? these are not your ordinary cable guys. >> two u.s. ostastronauts trading in their gear for hard hats. they just finished a 6 1/2 hour space walk installing data and power cables on the exterior of the international space station. the installation is considered to be one of the most complicated cable jobs ever undertaken at the 16-year-old orbiting outpost. the astronauts will need a third space walk to finish the job, but they'll be back out on the job sunday. we understand they'll make their window. >> look at that. a house blown to bits caught on a dashboard video camera. police and utility crews in new jersey evacuated the area. people smelled a natural gas leak. the blast injured 15 people. two utility workers are still in critical condition. the house was under ren is our last day of complete sunshine. by tomorrow afternoon, clouds increase. as a weathermaker starts to move onshore. it's still chilly out there. if you're headed out and about although the sun is warming things out nicely temperatures are mostly in the upper 50s and we'll end up in the upper 60s later on today. 69 in the tri-valley. 65 in san francisco. and 70 degrees in the north bay today. so your weather headlines tell the story, warm afternoon sunshine, a little more cloud cover later on tonight. that fog will roll back in, and then we're really going to see the clouds increase by the end of the day on thursday. cool and damp into the weekend. so if you want the sunshine, you've got today, most of tomorrow, and then things start to change. and it's not just one weathermaker we're watching. we have a couple. but from the first one that comes through on friday into saturday some pretty decent looking rainfall totals. we were originally not forecasting anything measurable but right now, some of the models are showing us about a tenth of an inch in morgan hill. .05 for san jose and maybe up to a tenth of an inch in ukiah. the good flews is the hillsides are so pretty and green, and this re-enforcing shot of shower activity will keep it that way, at least for a while. really love the way the bay area looks. we the to wait for that to happen. let meet give you the timing of the next two systems. we stop the clock for you, move you forward in time friday at about 1:00 showers working through the bay area. we continue to advance the future cast. stop it at you about the story of sam acacia coworkers found him lying on the ground and bleeding from his head. no one saw what happened but dispatch reports show up to 53 minutes may have passed before anyone called 911. for years, the policy at the oakland facility said only postal police are allowed to initiate the 911 procedure. now, though it says in an emergency anyone who can call 911 should. >> if city is wondering whether there's another threat. >> bill neely reports from paris. >> for the last two nights, police have spotted mystery drones over five landmark locations. first over the american embassy. then at the plaza concord, the eiffel tower, the military museum, and finally over the pastille. police couldn't tell if it was one or multiple drones or who the controller was, and they couldn't bring one down. there have never been so many sightings two nights running. >> it can be used for surveillance, and they can be used in propaganda films. that's a real concern. >> in recent weeks, mystery drones have buzzed the presidential palace, nuclear pants, and military basis. in a country fearful of terrorism after last month's attacks in paris that left 17 people dead, and it's not just paris that's worried. last month in washington a drone flew above the white house and crashed into the lawn. >> the biggest risk in a drone is you would pack it with explosives with a detonating device and ride it into a large group of people. >> paris is still on the highest security alert after more threats by islamists to target the city. the unexplained drones are raising tensions further. now, you might think there must be an innocent explanation for all of this. it can't be serious, and that may well be the case but the police here are taking this very seriously, and not a hand out. many people believe the best way to help people is to teach them to help themselves. >> how do you go about doing that? one south bay nonprofit thinks they have a successful working model growing at a rapid rate. garvin thomas is here with today's bay area proud. >> janice barren as you'll learn in a moment, started sunday friends 18 years ago. but three years ago, the nonprofit hired a successful tech executive to take over. their budget has grown five-fold in the time and they think the community they're creating others will want to be a part of. >> i interact with the kids i ask them what are you doing this summer. >> a funny thing about trying to teach someone a lesson. >> if they say nothing, i don't know -- >> that every once in a while you learn one yourself. >> this year i really want to turn that around. >> it happened to janice 18 years ago. when a lesson she hopes to teach her children revealed to her a new way to help those in need of a hand. something she now calls sunday friends. >> it's a combination of learning and service. you know, all in interwoven together. >> it was in 1997 that janice a lifelong volunteer, took her three teenagers to a local homeless shelter to teach them about giving back. janice and her kids tried engaging the homeless children with games and crafts with limited success. but then looking around the trash filled property janice had an idea. >> i turned to the child next to me and i said i'll give you a sticker for each ten pieces of trash you pick up and count into the trash can. i must have been overheard because immediately all these kids came running. they wanted to know how many pieces do we have to pick up to earn a whole sheet of stickers. that was the formative moment the birth of sunday friends. >> our day starts with families -- >> what was born then has not stopped growing. now at three san jose locations, sunday friends works with hundreds of low income families a year. the stickers now gone replaced by tickets. parents and their children earn the tickets any number of ways participating in glass, writing letters of thanks to donors. working on projects that benefit other nonprofits. the list goes on. at the end of the day, those tickets are redeemable in a store for the things families both need and want. the secret to all of this is that while earning, the families are learning about parenting, about health and perhaps most importantly, self-reliance. >> we work together side by side as equals to give back to the community. so there's that sense of respect. we don't praise them for doing well. we thank them for contributing. >> we are not just impacting low income. we also impact volunteers. >> for 25 years, ali was a silicon valley tech executive. he learned about sunday friends after his son volunteered here and three years ago took over as executive director with big plans. >> if this program is good for this community, it's got to be good for other communities. >> and once they do try it sunday friends believe they will learn the lesson janice learned long ago. that the best kind of charity isn't actually charity at all. when ali took over as executive director of sunday friends, a few years ago, their budget was in the area of there 200,000. they're now operating with a million dollar budget and looking to keep growing. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> well so much of the nation blanketed in snow, maybe you're feeling a little left out here in the bay area. no? well nast ylooking to capitalize on the feeling some people are having. >> ship snow yo. he'll ship snow as a service. he'll shep a water bottle full of snow for $20 if you pay $89 to get six pounds of snow. he said he's already made more than 100 shipments, came up with the idea while shoveling his yard with his wife and joking, they ought to send the snow to family and friends. >> my kids have asked my mother-in-law to do that send snow from new york. >> once a year, our church trucks in snow from tahoe, or maybe we don't anymore, but the kids play with it it's fun. >> that's cool. christina, that kind of snow doesn't show up on the radar. >> i wish we had that kind of snow. that's what we need to get out of the drought. it's funny how it's equal but opposite. they're getting hammered with system after system. we're having sunny days and warmer than average temperatures. that will persist into the upcoming next couple days and then things start to change and we have some snow probably not enough for scott's church but snow on the way to tahoe as combined we're looking toward some decent rainfall totals. .25 inch in napa santa rosa closer to a half inch. areas to the north, and then in the south bay, i don't think we'll see a lot of rabe but maybe .1 inch. that will keep the hill sides nice and moist. getting into the next couple days, staying nice today, sunday, want to make indoor plans. you'll be able to get out there without heavy
