And thats because the family lived on that side of the building, they say the man was stuck there, again, in critical condition. That side is also where there were six people according to the fire chief, trapped on that fire escape. If you go down you can see that the ladder actually doesnt fall anywhere doesnt drop because it meets that awning. We spoke with several witnesses who said it wasnt just fire escapes malfupgzing but there were no working smoke alarms or Sprinkler Systems. Among the people a young boy hailed as a hero for saving his dog and himself. He said he thought someone was trying to break into his apartment, and they told him, your apartment is on fire. You need to get out. The window wouldnt open. I had to push it really hard. It broke, like shattered. I went down to the bottom fire escape. And the ladder i dont know something didnt work with the ladder, so they told me to drop my dog first. And then i had to drop myself. So, yeah the cops caught me. And thank god im okay. That was a two hfstory jump but alessandro and his dog are fine today. Youre a hero. Everybody was saying that. I dont see myself as a hero. You know. But i couldnt save my bunny, which was sad for me. Gonzalez and others inside the building at 22nd and mission said they didnt hear any alarms go off. No indication of the fouralarm blaze that would kill one man who firefighters said was dead before they got to him. I didnt see anything just you know the smoke coming from underneath. And then what you didnt hear any alarms go off, nothing . No nothing. Nothing. Preliminarily, were hearing there was reports from witnesses there were no audible alarms in the building that they heard, so without warning, there was a fire. And so the natural thing for them to do is go to the fire escape because they couldnt get down the stairs. So were looking at the Sprinkler System looking at if there was a working and adequate fire alarm system as well. And making sure some of our firefighters had a difficult time accessing certain residences. One person described it as maze like. Ed lee joined the fire chief visiting the aftermath. His focus now shifts squarely to the people who lived and works in the apartments and the estimated 20 or so Small Businesses that had offices here. While temporary shelter may have been had last night, we will be identifying places that we have available to help with these residents on the few weeks ahead. Back to you live. Theres a group of people standing there. We believe most of them are residents or people who live and work in the building. They have been speaking with firefighters and building inspectors. Theyre hoping to get inside to see if they can retrieve buildings. Lonely arson investigators will be allowed. Theyre here and will determine a cause of the fire as well as origin, but that could take days. The city says Building Code inspections happen every three years. And that this building passed the last one, that was two years ago. Meantime, the red cross has helped 46 of 59 displaced people placing 24 of them in housing in various hotels. But a lot for people to take in. I spoke with another woman who said she was supposed to move into this building today. She moved here from denver. And doesnt know what shes going to do. Heres just 6 years old, but this bay area boy is at the center of a debate over vaccinations. Parents of that child in marin battling cancer worried classmates who are not vaccinated are putting their son at risk. So his parents are asking his school to keep those kids out of class. Mark matthews talked with the parents and the school. His dad started the conversation when he posted the question on a medical blog. I hypothesized what would happen if my child got sick just because a person for personal beliefs didnt immunize their child and it got my child sick. He has been very sick battling leukemia for the past five years. His system isnt Strong Enough to respond to a vaccination and like like hundreds of other Cancer Patients in there bay area if they get measles, its not a small thing. Not only are they at risk for a more severe form of illness, like measles, for example, but it would likely delay their therapy. His parents went to his Elementary School and asked the school to consider requiring parents to vaccinate their students. The superintendant was sympathetic. They have the same goal, which is not to bar students from going to school but to encourage families to immunize their children. California law allows parents to claim a personal belief exemption from vaccinations though this year, they have to consult first with a medical professional. Jody said its time to have the exemption law repealed. Were hoping theres. Some either a person or an organization, a politician who sees this and says this is something that we can do something about. The family is certainly getting a lot of attention in the past 24 hours, National News organizations have been lining up to tell their story. Everybody has been trying to find a human reason to prove why the doctors are right, the ones that are saying immunize your children. Mark matthews nbc bay area news. There are legalities that come along with that. There are. The u. S. Navy is investigating a fighter jet pilot who flew over the city of berkeley while on a Training Mission. Flyby ozloud scary and possibly a way to say byebye to his brother at cal. We have more on the brotherly gesture thats caused a bit of comotion. What is that . Many eyes looked skyward tuesday afternoon when a loud frightening noise rumbled over berkeley. I thought something was invading berkeley or something because it was loud and it caused the whole building to shake. It was kind of crazy. I saw somebody on the street, and i said was that really terrifying . She said yes. It was an fa18e superhornet like this one on youtube, on a Training Mission returning to its air station. An online tracker traced the path coming in from the Golden Gate Bridge and over the Berkeley Hills then down to its base. According to the tracker, it never went below 2500 feet. Though some people thought it was flying much lower than that. Fearing it would hit buildings. Were used to helicopters all the time but this was clearly really loud really like bang. When online news site berkeley side posted the story, someone going by the name the culprit, wrote in the Comment Section he was a cal student and his brother was the pilot of the jet, essentially saying hi to him. Senior reporting, emily ruguso confirmed the report. The navy would not confirm the identity of the pilot, but we feel confident based on our interactions with him that hes telling us the truth. In the statement, the naval force said while Training Missions in the local area are common and the pilot was under positive faa control the u. S. Navy is investigating the flight to insure the aviator complied with all faa and u. S. Navy regulations. If the flight was in fact just a shoutout to the pilots brurt at cal, some people thought it was cool, while others are upset. A lot of people were scared by it. They dont know what it was. It was completely inappropriate to be using Public Resources to do Something Like that. When the danger could be so great. Nannette miranda. All we get are Police Helicopters around my neighborhood. My kids would have run out and looked up and said cool. Well see how the investigation turned out eventually. So a bad start to the year with this january on track to be the driest on record in the bay area. As firefighters worried about a busy fire season and warning fires like the one we saw in pacifica earlier this week could become the norm. Sam brock takes a look at the numbers to see if winter wildfires really are on the rise. Yeah this drought has taken a strangle hold on california, the last couple years. Its not surprising the drier conditions have led to more fires in general. But in the dead of winter we had cal fire pull up the februarys for january for the last five years to see what kind of story they tell. Situated along a pristine coastline, there city of pacifica has plenty of waves, moisture packed air and fog. Not conditions typically conducive to this. A booming brushfire that sprang up in a cove not far from Rockaway Beach on january 26th forcing the evacuation of some 80 homes. The north county Fire Department sells us this is the first wildlands fire in pacifica this year and cal fire calls it an oddity. You have a fire on the coast that you would think the area would not be susceptible to any type of fire. Due to where its located. And due to the moisture content in that area. And other anomalies are cropping up too. You remember the king fire in the Eldorado National forest last september that was the king of fires in 2014 tearing through almost 100,000 acres. In the same region five fires popped up last weekend in the middle of january, burning 70 acres. A timber fire is a very significant indicator, if you will, up here in the forest those areas should be under snow and theyre not. With warning signs red hot, what do the numbers show . Cal fire pulled the figures for us. In the last five years, the bay area zone has averaged seven fires and 72 acres burned in january. In 2015 so far just three fires and one total acre. Though that doesnt include the pacifica or eldorado fires since they werent on cal fire land. But go back to 2014 and january saw 472 fires in the bay area and 1300 acres burned. Numbers that pop. Whats the difference . Experts say the drenching we got back in december thats helped stave off the flames for now. But as things continue to dry out, expect fire activity to pick up. The reality is this is an imperfect science. Cal fire is responsible for 33 million acres in california and their stats are the best indicator that we have even if they are incomplete. The numbers tell us this january has not been historic for fires. But they also point to a major bump coming in the next few months. Im sam brock. Thats this edition of reality check. And after an unexpected delivery, a u. P. S. Driver is out of a job. Surveillance cameras outside a houston home caught the deliveryman chucking the package over the fence very carelessly but its what the driver did next that shocked the homeowner. You can see in the tape the driver unzips his pants and then relieves himself on the side of the house. The owner posted that video to youtube and got a humg response. U. P. S. Says the driver has been fired and u. P. S. Apologized to the homeowner. Well rare sites in yosemite but this may be the rarest. Park biologists were thrilled to see this picture of a Sierra Nevada red fox. A remote camera snapped the shot. The first time in a century a Sierra Nevada red fox has been spotted in the national park. Hes or she is one of 50 left in the wild making it one of the rarest mammals in north america. Walking like he owns the place. Up next at 11 00, string of controversy days before the super bowl, the ad from a local company that has puppy lovers in an uproar. And hear from the stars of parenthood as the show gets ready for the Series Finale tonight. Im going to miss that show. Good morning to you. Pacifica, right now, nice and clear. We have big changes on the way. Potentially. Some of the futurecast models bringing heavy rain over an inch and a half even in san jose, and some just dont agree. Im going to show you what i look and let you be the meteorologist when we come right back. Theyre expensive. They are closely watched, and at least one Super Bowl Ad stirring up controversys and it involves a bay area tech company. Scott budman has more on why godaddy is pulling its Super Bowl Ad. Hi im kim. In addition to ads featuring Kim Kardashian and ads pitching beer in various ways the super bowl was going to include this ad from Technology Company godaddy. It features a cute dog, a dog that gets sold at the end of the spot. I think its a misfire. Jeff holmes ceo of an ad firm is right. After a vitriolic backlash on social media, godaddy pulled the ad, releasing a statement admiding the company underestimated the emotional response. Now, because people are releasing them early, youve got facebook and twitter lighting up, you get a lot of feedback so in a way, you get to test it and see if you can extend the story. In their case they were somewhat lucky that they didnt expose that to 108 million people. Given the rocky year for the nfl when it comes to Domestic Violence, a lot of people are happy to see this ad from a group called no more. Org. It spotlights Domestic Violence and how viewers can help. I think its tremendous. I think ad time is very expensive for that game. And to put that in and use ad time for that type of commercial, so to speak, is wonderful. Theres nothing under the hood. Its the most viewed event of the year and we now have some idea what people will be talking about after the game. Scott budman nbc bay area news. That today show ad is very good. I cant help but wonder if godaddy really misjudged or really well judged things and it was a bit of a plan. More folks are talking about it, you mean. Exactly. We told you earlier this week madden nfl predicted a win for the patriots in the super bowl but now theres a more scientific prediction. The website predictionmachine. Com ran 50,000 simulations of super bowl xlix trying to take everything into account. If found almost 58 of the time the seahawks won. Most likely score, 2420, predictors say the seahawks are simply the team more capable of dominating. Now, in case we had not mentioned it on sunday on this very tv channel, nbc bay area we will show you the super bowl. Starts around 10 00 a. M. Supersized pregame show. Kickoff at 3 30 also bob redell headed to arizona today. Hell start bringing us live reports, starting tomorrow morning. And he took my photographer. The one i usually work with allen. What else is on nbc . Parenthood for now. Yeah fans of the show are bracing for tonight because after six seasons, the family drama will say goodbye with what many people expect will be an emotional drama. My parents watch it but theyre on season three. They talked to the stars about the farewell. Im proud of you, son, for standing up for justice. The family ties that bind on parenthood. They look like garden hoses. Wer hour than the moments on camera. This has been the happiest most cope ascetic set i have worked on. That made the final days on set last month that much tougher. You walked around ankle deep in tears, what was it like . It was sad. The last day was sad. I think im still in denial and i think i will be until the last episode airs. Potter said shooting the final kitchen scene was especially tough. It was weird. And i think those tiny moments really struck me more than the actual big final scenes. And even though parenthood never struck gold in the ratings, the highs and lows of the Braverman Family struck a chord with fiercely loyal fans. People found comfort in the show, and the prospect of the comfort taken away from them is doesnt feel good. Theyre mad. Sad, too. Very sad. But the stars hope the finale youll be there for her. Helps ease the thing. You want to be my best man. There are elements thereat are fine universally and there are things other people might have a different opinion about. A lot of tears, but closure. Keep the tissues handy. All right. I know my sister is crying already. Doing the precry. Christina loren is also doing the precry, huh . I like christina braverman. Im a big fan of hers. You probably know nothing of what i speak of. Pacifica, though looking good right nu. You know all about this. We had gorgeous weather. Absolutely spectacular weather over the past couple days. And that will continue to get a little bit of rainfall earlier this week and as a result of that were actually looking pretty good. Our hillsides are nice and moist still, and thats a good sign for us. Were not sparing the air. This is what im really watching for you as we get into next week. It looks like well see substantial rainfall starting at the beginning of next week and continuing into next weekend. Heres the thing. Whenever we go beyond three days out when were forecasting the storm systems, it gets really really hard to predict. And some of the futurecast models are bringing in a lot of rain and others arent bringing in much at all. Im going to show you the two i rely most heavily upon and let you decide. Were at 58 degrees in San Francisco. 55 in oakland, and 54 degrees in san carlo. The weather story of the day, mild sunshine with a building breeze coming your way. Really good looking day for you to get outdoors. If you havent been able to enjoy the weather, because it does look like its going to change. It will get cooler next week. Thats just about certain. 63 in San Francisco. 66 on the peninsula. And 67 degrees right here in the south bay. Just beautiful conditions. But weve got a big change in the pattern as we head through next week. Not before we get a little bit of a warmup, though. High pressure is going to take the storm track to the north. For us that means temperatures in the 70s for the weekend. Looking good to make the outdoor plans and by monday light showers move in. Not expecting anything measurable. But hey, as we get into next friday, thats when were looking at the significant storm system. Let me kind of give you an idea of what the different models are projecting because they do vary significantly. This is the one that actually handles what is going on on the east coast rather well. Called the gfs. Al roker refers to it as the american model. If this pans out, were talking about an inch and a half of rainfall right here in san jose. More like an inch and three quarters in Half Moon Bay and over an inch in walnut creek and napa. But then the european model doesnt really agree, bringing much loeter totals into the picture. You might be wondering, youre the meteorologist, why dont you take a pick . And i will. This is the one that handled it much better the gfs model, this is the one im always looking at for you, but im going to take the totals down maybe by about a half an inch. I think well get about an inch of rabe out of the system as well as everything works as it should stays organized as we head through the next couple days. I have nng to watch now you may have a vested interest in it as well. Well keep you updated. Im pretty excited about this. I havent seen this for a month. Its been dismal. With all this talk of the super bowl and people betting on their favorite teams, we should wager a bet on the gfs and the european model. I think christina wagers a bet every day. And usually wins. Still to come a big day for small things. Artificates on the edge of the San Francisco bay, and we get to go along for the dig. Welcome back. For most students, the idea of Holding History in their hands means reading a book. For some San Francisco teenagers, holding shovels and tools instead of books. Joe rozotto jr. Shows us how theyre learning history lessons by getting their hands dirty. Time has a funny way with stuff. Given enough time youre looking for every little piece of glass. Even the everyday stuff may eventually be worth digging out. Found one of those, like a leg bone. Saw a lot of pieces of glass. Near San Franciscos ocean beach, a group of students from a high school sifted through layers of history. Trying to shake the treasure from the trash. Its like gold mining a little bit. Youre helping the people find out whats here back in the day. Back in the day, around 1880 this hilltop was the site of former San Francisco mayor adolph sutroses mansion. We know he was here but we dont know his employees who worked here. So these budding archeologists pitched in to help the park service comb the hill down the hill from where the workers stood. This is trying to grow a new clension for the park about the people who made this piece rather than the people who owned this place. And theyre hoping we can find some of the stuff that the people had that lived here like their employees and stuff. Over the decades, this land has swallowed plenty of stuff. End of a shoe. Piece of concrete. Some collectible. Shotgun shells from exactly 1884. Some lots of beer bottles. Not so much. To the students its exciting because it uncovers a story that happened here. During the twoday dig, one of the smallest finds caused the biggest stir. I picked it up and gave it to a lady and she said it might be a coin and it was. A japanese coin. It immediately raises the question of who was out here in 1887. There were plenty of clues who had been here since 1887. Lots of buttons. People are losing their coats here. I dont know what thats about. And lots of lipstick. Turns out even lipstick is an artifact if its discovered in an archaeological dig. One student, her name is on the archaeological record now. A porcelain dish a very old fossil. For all we know were looking at Something Like an agent badger will help tell the story of this place a help with the help of some students has added a whole new chapter. Like history, its crazy. What a good teacher. They want to be aloof because theyre teenagers, but they cant help it. Well be right back.
