spare the air day with the unhealthiest levels here in the santa clara valueley and through the tri-valley. the wind will pick up a touch through tonight. as a result of a storm system approaching the bay area we'll likely not be sparing the air as we head through midweek. that looks good. fantastic to not break the record. some records you want. that's not one of them. now, we have a lot of fog lingering across the bay area. you can clearly see that from high atop san bruno mountain. it's slowly starting to clear. this is a really good representation of how fog does clear. that sun comes out, warms up the top layer, and clears from the top down. you can actually see right from san bruno mountain starting to make that city appearance. this is what it looks like on the golden gate bridge. quite the contrary. likely to be socked in with fog all day long here. we'll see a repeat performance. the good news is as more and more commuters hit the highway, we're looking good to not have to spare the air tomorrow with more wind in the forecast. temperatures are climbing nicely. look at these numbers. we're in the 50s for now. we're on our way to the 60s. hard to complain when most of the nation is still feeling the effects of a brutal winter. i'll let you know when things start to change for us. we have rain in the forecast. stick around. i'll let you know when those rain drops are expected. right now, back to you. >> christina paung. just into the news room, the twitter and youtube accounts belonging to the u.s. military's central command have been hacked. they claim to be working on behalf of the islamic state militants. the sites were filled with threats. military officials tell nbc news there was some information posted to those sites, but none of that information was classified. new at 11:00 this morning, gavin newsome will not run for barbara boxer's seat in the u.s. senate. he posted on his facebook page this morning that his heart remains firmly in the state of california not in washington, d.c. newsom had been rumored to be one of the democratic candidates to possibly take over for boxer, who said she will not seek another term in 2016. and scary moments in the south bay for chris brown fans. shots rang out at a nightclub sunday morning as he took the stage. nbc's nannette miranda joins us from the location. how is the investigation coming? >> reporter: well it's going pretty slow at the moment. san jose police did detain and question several people after the shooting but so far no arrests. chris brown has had a troubled past including a domestic violence case in 2009 involving pop star rihanna. the star attraction at private party held at the fiesta nightclub on monterey road was controversial r&b singer chris brown. he finally took the stage toward the end of the celebration, and during his first song, right around 1:20 a.m. -- [ gunfire ] >> reporter: gunfire. and the crowd of about 700 went into a panic. brown reacted by ducking. everyone else scattered, getting low to the ground or running to the exits. a witness who took cell phone video of the incident asked that she not be identified. >> i could see people hiding under the bar, just everybody hiding panicking. it was like a scary movie. >> reporter: in all, five people were shot and sustained non-life threatening injuries. brown was not hurt and was quickly hustled backstage to safety. >> there was blood everywhere. it was a bloody massacre. >> reporter: the event was originally scheduled to be held in downtown san jose p but due to capacity concerns, it was moved to the bigger fiesta nightclub at last minute. today cleanup of the club's parking lot is under way, as the mess left behind sunday morning was still there. residents are upset that the location did not provide adequate security. >> the first thing that came to my mind was, you know, weren't they checking to see if they had weapons when they came in? >> reporter: yesterday's shooting in san jose marks the third instance of nightclub violence involving chris brown in just five months. in august he was the alleged target of a shooting at a west hollywood venue. a month later, the grammy winning artist was out drinking with friends in new york when a bottle throwing brawl broke out. in this instance witnesses say that brown was not the intended target. brown is scheduled to come back here in san jose in march at the s.a.p. center as part of his national tour. live in san jose nannette miranda. >> all right. thank you. community leaders are organizing a prayer vigil tonight for the four people shot and killed in san francisco. this was friday night. flowers and candles now mark the scene of the shooting. the men were shot as they sat in a car on laguna street in hayes valley. this is believed to be gang related. police say the car the men were sitting in was actually stolen. no arrests have been made. a police chase spanning two east bay cities ended when a car, a police car, crashed into a cement barrier. it started early this morning with a routine traffic stop in san leandro. the suspect led police on a chase all the way into oakland. the car got away after a right turn on northbound 880. the san leandro police cruiser couldn't make the turn and slammed into a cement pylon. crews had to use the jaws of life to free it the officer who was trapped in the car. that person was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the suspect is still on the run. a big change on the iconic golden gate. the first morning commute with the new median barrier is over. the new zipper trucks have already been put to good use after years of planning and a weekend full of work. the new movable median is installed ready to go. >> nbc bay area's stephanie trong is live at the bridge. did you get to see the trucks do their business? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. we tried to get a shot of the zipper trucks in action for the first time but as you can see, it's kind of tough to do when the fog is here masking the view of the golden gate. you can see some of the median here, but now the lanes are three and three. we did see a crash leading our live shot off the bridge. so far, the new mean yandian is not a factor. some drivers we spoke with say it did lead to the collision. >> kind of bad. i'm surprised my air bag didn't go off. i'm a little shaken up. >> reporter: this was not the start of the week kathleen fox was hoping for. she was heading from san francisco to santa rosa when her suv was sandwiched in a multivehicle collision. a collision hard enough to force air bags to deploy in the last of the chain reaction. this white suv. fox believes a lane change heading north as a result of the new zipper trucks was partly to blame. >> people are accustomed to opening up into four lanes right after they get off the bridge. now they're going to go about 1,000 feet up the hill. the zipper trucks are, in fact parked in the median at that location. >> i think that caused a little confusion. that's why someone broke really quick and we all rear ended one another. >> i guess you have the lane changer machines there. i don't know if those people stopped to look at that. i'm investigating it right now. >> this is the result of a monday morning and fog and a new median. >> reporter: as golden gate bridge patrol and chp took pictures and reports of the crash, these drivers told us they prefer the 1500-pound concrete and steel barriers over the old plastic pylons that used to be the seoul objects separating the two directions of traffic. >> it feels better you're not really facing a car coming right at you. that's a little more -- but yeah i worry more people will be crashing into the median. >> it was just a little narrow. i felt like i was too much towards the edge. so i had to, you know, keep to the right. >> reporter: the key here speed. the warning is to keep it low, as drivers get used to new changes from the new movable medians and zipper trucks to the new merge south on the waldo grade. now right to left with a speed limit there dropping from 55 to 45 miles an hour. >> you might be used to the new median or find that it's not really any different, but other people might find it. so be careful. go slower. >> reporter: back here live you can see the fog has cleared a little bit in the last minute or two. you see the cars now navigating with that new median barrier. reports are that the crash we talked about may have been a result of people looking on the other side southbound, where there could have been a crash or tow truck activity as a distraction. plus, the fog. although, this is a commuter bridge. people who drive this regularly are very used to these conditions. by the way, one of the interviewees we spoke with said he had just dropped off his 7-month pregnant wife. he's very thankful she was not in the car and on that note thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries. live at the golden gate bridge, stephanie chuang. >> stephanie, thanks. >> yeah good to see that there. a lot of folks not looking at the roadway. they're looking at the vista t right? so new details now more details. a woman who survived a head-on crash on the golden gate bridge in 2008 and who is now partially para liezed spoke at that ribbon cutting ceremony. >> i'm so grateful. i am so grateful because maybe in the future people will meet in a slightly different way. >> as she worked lobbying for a permanent median barrier she actually met the man who was driving the car that crashed into hers. and they have since become friends. stay with us for continuing coverage of the new median on the golden gate bridge. as always, you can key upep up to date with the latest any time of date at nbcbayarea.com. one of two climbers is making a push to catch up to the other partner on the sheer granite in yosemite national park. 30-year-old kevin yorgen son from santa rosa has been behind 36-year-old tommy caldwell for about a week. they're trying to scale the el captain. it will be a push to the 3,000-foot summit. hopefully by midweek. last year he got past -- or last week rather he got past one of the most difficult stretches after days of failed attempts and waiting. climbers are two weeks into what's being billed as the first free climb of the dawn wall. >> just swung off the side right there. really unnerving. well if your co-workers is missing from work today, it could be because they won the lottery. there are two tickets matching all five numbers plug the mega number, making them worth $3.5 million each. one was sold at this 7-eleven start in mil pee das. the other at an arco amp station in richmond. both are jackpot winners, meaning all five numbers plus the mega number were a match. so while some of us were wishing we'd bought a ticket others were wishing that the tickets they did buy were a match. >> it's awesome because the last winner was just not too far from here. it would be awesome if i would have won that ticket but hey, you know what i'm not complaining. congratulations to whoever the new winner is. it's awesome. >> those winning numbers are 1,5, 16 24 30 and the mega number is 7. the winners have 180 days to claim their winnings. >> and if you're just hearing this and you just won, remember it's kris sanchez. don't forget to tip your news anchor. still to come mission half kplished. the space x dragon capsule makes it to the international space station, but it's the other part of the mission we're more interested in. >> plus the golden globes get dished out. winners, losers and who's still making a buzz this morning. and welcome back. the dow industrial up 78 points this morning. we have word that oil prices may fall even further. this from goldman. and stocks have begun to lag with that news. president obama was in the midst of a speech this morning proposing new cyber security laws when the twitter account belonging to u.s. central command was apparently hacked as we showed you. the images sympathetic to isis appeared on the account's site but were quickly taken down. president obama is suggesting new laws to cover businessings, which would require them to notify consumers within 30 days if their information was hacked. california already has a 30-day law in place. in fact, some privacy advocates fear the president could propose new federal laws that are less restrictive than what we in california already have. president obama will also offer a bill which would crack down on what data is collected by schools and the technology companies which supply them. the concern being that as we add all those apps and ipads and computers to school classrooms we're also opening up our children's private lives to marketers. but once again, california leads the way. governor brown signed a law prohibiting any noneducational use of student data collected by school computers. 30 states have no laws at all about student data. the unmanned space x dragon capsule arrived safely at the international space station this morning. it's delivering cargo and new experiments. here you see the launch of the falcon nine on saturday. now, this is the one part of the mission where not everything was quite accomplished. space x had hoped to land the first stage of this rocket back down on a floating platform. but that did not work. elon musk tweeted, didn't get good landing/impact video. pitch darg and foggy. will piece it together from actual pieces. kris? >> not the kind of tweet he was hoping to send out. happening today, it is the first day of what is planned to be a week-long strike at kaiser hospitals across the bay area. more than 2,000 mental health workers are expected to walk off the job. union members are planning picket lines at some three dozen locations statewide. the union is demanding more mental health workers be hired and retained. kaiser says its teams are sufficiently staffed. a hospital spokesman says is all campuses will meet the needs of patients through the end of the strike and all offices will remain open. as i'm sure you saw here on nbc last night, the top stars in tv and movies turned out in hollywood for the golden globe awards. the hollywood foreign press association doled out honors for this year's best work. we have a wrap-up of some of the winners. >> and the golden globe goes to "boyhood." >> a movieuovie about growing up which took a dozen years to film won best picture. best supporting actress, patricia arquette and best director. >> i want to dedicate this to parents evolving everywhere and families just passing through this world. >> it was also a big night for julianne moore. >> oh my goodness. >> she won best actress in a drama for "still alice" while newlywed eddie redmayne won for his portrayal of stephen hawking in "the edge of everything." amy adams did not expect to win best actress in a musical or comedy for "big eyes." >> i didn't even reapply lip gloss. >> michael keaton gave an emotional speech accepting best actor for his performance in "birdman." >> i'm so grateful honestly from the bottom of my heart. you have no idea what this means to me. >> but in a surprise keaton's film lost out on best musical or comedy to "the grand budapest hotel." there were more upsets in the tv categories. >> "transparent." >> the amazon.com series about a transgender parent won best comedy and best actor for star jeffrey tambor. >> this is much bigger than mi. >> another surprise gina rodriguez of "jane the virgin" beat out veterans like julia louis dreyfus for best actress. another first-year series "the affair" walked away with best tv drama and best actress for one of its stars, ruth wilson. best actor honors went to kevin spacey for "house of cards." nbc news los angeles. >> says a lot about the fracturization of television. "the affair" and "transparent," i've never heard of them and they won best television shows. >> "transparent" is not even traditional media, not cable. >> amazon. >> interesting times. here's meteorologist christina loren with interesting times in the weather department. finally relief from can we call it smog? >> indeed, we can. we can call it whatever we want. the good news is it's getting out of town and that's fantastic for us who have been suffering. people with asthma respiratory issues happy to learn we will not be sparing the air tomorrow. also, people who want to have that fire. you're actually going to be able to have one tomorrow without it being illegal. 59 degrees in half moon bay. the more we continue to try our best to keep this air quality clean, the better off the whole area will be. so if you don't have to have that fire you probably want to hold off until we get some rain. that's right, i said rain. it is in the forecast. let's talk about this because it's actually historic. this is our 11th consecutive spare the air day. as you can see here we have better levels of pollution, if you can say that at the coast and east bay for today with the unhealthiest levels right now in the santa clara valley and through the tri-valley. we will see better air quality throughout the week. storm system is slowly but surely making its way toward the bay area coastline. here's the deal. a little bit of fog still lingering out there. hazy and mild to finish off the day. by tomorrow, you can get out there, go for a bike ride, go for a run, breathe in the air. much better air quality on tap for tuesday into wednesday. then the rain will return as we get into this weekend. let's talk about the dry period that we have. before we get that rain temperatures will be comfortable this week. mostly ending up in the mid-60s. 67 degrees in north bay for today. san francisco at 61. and 66 degrees in the tri-valley. meanwhile, 64 degrees in beautiful san jose. we have a little bit of warming trend headed our way as we get into the midsection of the week. between wednesday and thursday close to 70 degrees in san jose. i think we'll bypass that 70-degree mark in places like santa cruz. really look at san francisco. very unusual to hit the mid-60s this time of year. typically one of the coldest months, and we're seeing that really comfortable weather continue all week long in the city by the bay. then, of course you want to make those weekend plans, and the rain arrives. really focusing on this rain as we head throughout saturday night into sunday morning. whole thing is going to clear out of here, but we have more rain on tap for early next week tuesday into wednesday. we really need it. hopefully this chance will maintain. overall, second half of january looking to be much more active in terms of rainfall than what we've seen so far. it's just been dry, hence we've been sparing the air. i'm happy to not have to report a 12th brand new record for spare the air day. just one of those records you don't want to have here in the bay area. we want the beautiful weather and beautiful air quality both on tap for tomorrow. back to you, scott and kris. >> a baker's dozen can be 13. yours can be 11. >> nice. well one dog's owners simple solution to keeping his best friend toast you on the coldest of nights. how it works next. don't wait for awesome... totino's pizza rolls... ...gets you there in just 60 seconds. go bold with flavors that kick. release a devastating avalanche of taste on your tongue. bury group of 1500 survivors about their continuing needs after cancer. 38% said they suffered physical problems. patients who had prostate cancer most often complained of sexual incontinence problems. black and hispanic survivors were more likely to say financial problems due to the cost of treatment. among the common theme, really was anxiety about having cancer return. >> i bet. a south carolina got it set up. robert set up an igloo home for his four-legged friend with pipes set up from his home. the dog is presumably resting comfortably no matter what the weather outside. >> you cannot use it as a granny unit, no. still to come they are taking over the air. unmanned drones getting dangerously close to planes. what our investigative unit uncovered after poring through faa documents. well, they're popping up in more places, unmanned drones taking over the skies. those small flies devices becoming increasingly controversial and sometimes even dangerous. >> yeah right now lawmakers are trying to figure out how to regulate them. our senior investigative reporter looked into faa data and shows us that more and more drones are flying far too close for comfort near passenger planes. >> experts believe that the numbers of these close calls between drones and airplanes are, quote, going in the wrong direction, up. and they say that jeopardizes your safety whenever you fly. when we hear the term drones most of us think of these. model airplanes used for stunts by hobbyists. or these, large armed military spy planes. but consider this. this is video taken from a drone flying a medical mission in haiti. >> it's new and a lot of people don't really know what it's about, what exactly, you know -- what do they do. >> this man is cceo and founder of a san francisco company whose entire business plan is based on the use of drones. >> if you fly, you must follow the rules, the safety rules, like anything else. they can be great tools. they can also be pretty dangerous if you don't use them safely. >> and whether americans, the federal aviation administration, or congress like it or not, drones what are technically known as unmanned aircraft systems, have already taken off elsewhere around the world. in other countries thousands of drones now legally fly, delivering emergency supplies monitoring farms, and construction sites and even filming movies. >> we don't like the word drone. we don't use it to describe our vehicles. >> andreas and his company already do amazing and life-changing things with unmanned aircraft. they just do it in other countries besides the u.s. >> my view is that it's absolutely amazing that, you know, people are getting excited about using this technology. flying is inherently exciting. >> these pictures tell the story of how drones can change the world. a trek through the mud using trucks that can take days to get critical medical supplies to a remote region in papua new guinea takes a drone only hours. >> how can public perception around the use of new technology is one of the big challenges we have to deal with. >> but congress and the faa continue to wrestle with whether or not to allow commercial use of drones here. right now all commercial use of drones is banned in the u.s. with only a handful of exceptions granted by the faa. >> that's the main issue. you have seconds to react. >> fredrick robinson is captain for a commercial airline here. he and other pilots we talked to worry that some day a drone will bring down a commercial jet just like that flock of birds brought down u.s. airways flight 1549 over new york's hudson river. >> that's hard to spot when you're in a cockpit. >> just in the last 11 months of 2014 according to the faa, there were almost 200 sightings of drones near the flight paths of commercial aircraft in the u.s. >> yes, it does scare me. >> according to the faa, some drones have even been spotted flying thousands of feet off the ground, like the one seen by a pilot flying near burbank at 8,000 feet passing near a plane's wing. other drones are big. one was described as the size of a trash can. or another drone spotted at 4500 feet above sals lee toe. california new york and florida led the nation in these drone sightings. >> it's unacceptable. >> captain lee moak is president of the airline pilot's association. he testified before congress late last year about the dangers of unregulated drones in the u.s. >> because even one near mis, if it was a little left or a little right, could have created a larger problem. we need to address this. >> the faa data also shows that many of these drone sightings have come as commercial airlines were either taking off or landing, the most vulnerable time safety wise during flight. even drone advocates say this trend of close calls has to change before someone gets hurt. >> if you don't know how to use it, you'll crash it. it's pretty dangerous. you have to learn how to do it safe. then you get better results. >> i absolutely don't want to feel that myself my family my loed ones are ever threatened by those flying vehicles when they get on an airline. >> in a statement e-mail to nbc bay area the faa said it is quote, still in the process of executing a plan for safe and staged integration of unmanned aircraft into the national air space system. in fact, the faa has been steadying and working on this issue for a decade ten years. and critics say it must move faster because, like it or not, they say more and more drones will be flying around the world and in our skies whether or not the faa or congress acts to regulate them. i'm stephen stock, nbc bay area news. >> if you have a tip for stephen or the rest of our investigative unit call our tip line 888-996-tips or send an e-mail to
