Pretty soon, our sister station telemundo says everybody will have to be gone. Good morning. Today, several City Employees of san jose came out to the jungle to post these evacuation notices letting homeless know they have 72 hours to leave the place because beginning this thursday, all of the encampments will be destroyed. Were talking about hundreds of people who have called this place home for many years and who now have to pack up whatever they have and go. This morning, several officers went to each makeshift home to deliver the notices. The citys homeless response manager said theyve been working with several agencies to provide housing for those people and believe this time, theyll get rid of the problem for good. Weve been working very, very hard with our partner, nonprofit agencies, streets team, destination home and home first to get people into housing and provide them with a longterm solution thats better than this unsafe and unsanitary condition. But the majority of the homeless who got the notice this morning are angry and upset because they dont think the city is doing enough. And they say they simply dont have a place to go. Many people have asked why the city is doing this. And now, well, its because the cold weather shelters in Santa Clara County are opening this week and that provides an additional 275 temporary beds. One of the Biggest Challenges city leaders say they faced is the fact that a lot of the homeless are felons and others suffer from Mental Illness or addiction. So a lot of the times, they dont want to leave the streets because of the rules theyll have to follow. But city leaders are hopeful theyll be able to get rid of all of the encampments and keep everyone out come december 19th. In san jose, nbc bay area news. Well, let the clicks begin. Back to you, scott and kris. Well, composting, not just good for naturally getting rid of food scraps and making fertilizer. Its actually a critical weapon to fight climate change. Nbc bay areas joe rosado jr. Reporter the tiny town is quietly tucked away among the sloping hills of marin county, the town square is a baseball diamond surrounded by buildings, mostly from the 1800s. But just a couple of miles away from home plate is an experiment thats reverberating well beyond the town limits. This has been the native grass ranch. I made that up on the fly. Our mission is to promote native perennial grasses. John and his wife peggy bought this 54acre ranch 60 years ago with plans to return it to the native state. Our strategy was to remove the cattle from the landscape in an effort to let wilderness heal itself. He admits this home brewed strategy can you see the hill behind me . Failed miserably. It didnt. It actually caused the whole system go into chaos. Weeds began to choke the rolling grassland. And then the ranch fell apart in front of their eyes. So seven years ago, tapped the ideas of cutting edge agriculture expert jeff creek. We came up with a strategy to apply compost, very small amount do you mind following me up here . He divided the fields into five plots. Im standing here in the control plot. Some of those plots got a light dusting of compost. 1 2 inch of compost on standing vegetation. Spread it out. Could barely see it. This is where we step into the composted plots. Within 6 months, what we saw was significant increase in the grass that was growing in those rectangles. What we have those bunch grasses. Installed hightech monitors in the fields to gauge the amount of moisture and carbon coming into the soil. We saw massive quantity of carbon atoms that had come in from the atmosphere. What you experience is its softer under foot, more textured. Wider variety of plants, including flowers and different clovers. The odd thing is that year after year rolled by. And even though they never added anymore compost, the treated plots continued to burst with new plants while the lands without it got worse. You were able to increase plant growth enough that we captured an additional ton of soil carbon each year following that application. The study demonstrated that adding compost pulled carbon from the air and into the soil where it helped plants grow. At the same time, helping to clean the air of co2, a culprit of climate change. Compost is clearly, you know, in a sense its a miracle cure. Not only are we removing carbon from the atmosphere and helping to slow climate change, were also making the land simultaneously more resilient to the effects of climate change. Since launching the project, other farms in marin are staging similar experiments, and there were hopes it could eventually spread even further. Really trying to look at how can we support these practices on ranches across the state of california and really across the country. What we have here is manure. Believes the ideas germinating in these fields of Rolling Acres should send a message well beyond home plate and the tiny town. Nbc bay area news. Well, still to come, move over, barbie.
