Reporter 4 00 this morning Santa Clara County firefighters arrived to find the restaurant gas meter spewing flames like a dragon. A firefighter had to reach for the shutoff valve with only the layers of his suit between him and the hot gasfueled flames. The departments investigator believes the fire started outside the building by that meter. Burning up the wall of the kitchen and into the attic space above. Too early to see whether the gas meter fell which caused the fire. Or whether the fire was next to the gas meter and then heat from that transferred over and then basically made the meter fall. Reporter captain jeremy davis doesnt know yet if this Early Morning fire was accidental or arson. Too early to tell. The kitchen roof is gone, but the kitchen itself suffe ed mostly smoke and water damage. You can see the fire investigators out here with the Santa Clara County fire department. What theyre doing to do is pull back layers of debris by the gas meter. Taking photos trying to get an idea of what might have caused that gas to ignite. We tried to reach out to the restaurant, they dont want to speak on camera. One employee just told us she was k shoed. The owner, already on the scheduled flight back from a trip in new york city. Hes coming straight here from the airport to survey the damage. The restaurant had been closed for the holiday, was supposed to be reopening this wednesday. Just days short of what would have been its 13th anniversary. I say would have, its still going to be here, its not zroid. Just severely damaged. It happened just after 3 00 this morning at an apartment complex near brookedale avenue. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses say the man killed was in his 20s and was the father of two young children. No word on any arrest. Happening now, a silver alert is in effect for a missing woman from san leandro. Esther velequez was last seen last night driving to the airport. Concern because she was in the early states of dementia and may be disoriented. A major earthquake jolted southern mexico this morning killing at least three people and damaging dozens of homings. The 6. 9 magnitude quake hit near the guatemala border. Two died in their homes from collapsed walls in guatemala. Another man died in a mexican state. It created landslides that toppled utility poles. Power outages are also being reported. And just into our newsroom in the last 30 minutes, another plane carrying undocumented immigrant women and children who are from Central America landed in san diego. They deplaned and boarded three buses. It is unclear where they are headed now. But since last week, protesters have been blocking buses headed to an Immigration Center in murrieta in riverside county. They ended up turning around and going to an Immigration Office in san diego and to a processing station. These immigrants were flown here from an overflowing Immigration Holding Center in texas in anticipation of deportation. Thousands of children and families have arrived at the texas border in recent months fleeing violence in places like guatemala, el salvador, and honduras. A Court Victory for immigrant rights advocates. Blocking arizonas policy of denying drivers licenses to young immigrants. Those immigrants have obtained work permits and have avoided deportation under the Obama Administration policy. Supporter of the immigrants argue they were being harmed by unequal treatment and the Appeals Court agreed. Firefighters say the wildfire that has already charred 6400 acres has fuel to continue to grow significantly. Thats because the area has not burned for at least two decades. Fire started on the fourth of july near the Monticello Dam and is only 35 contained. Crews are working with dangerous hills, brittle brush, and extreme weather. Yesterday temperatures in the area reached 102 degrees. One firefighter was hurt when the bulldozer he was driving flipped. Condition unknown. About 40 homes were evacuated and highway 128 was closed as flames got close. But the danger has now passed for now. The evacuations were lifted. Nearby campgrounds, however, are still closed. Three bay area crews have joined in that firefight. They all sent 17 firefighters total to solano counties over the weekend. Most of the crews fighting that fire had just come from another wildfire in napa county. That fire started on tuesday and has now burned 4300 acres. Hundreds of homes were evacuated, but everyone is now back home and the fire is 90 contained. Two homes and seven small outbuildings were destroyed. One of the homes, though, was vacant. There is still more than 300 firefighters monitoring the perimeter and putting out hot spots. San jose Police Investigating the store where a man bought an illegal firework that blew off one of his hands. The injury happened on the fourth of july near castle park as ortiz and his family were celebrating the fourth. Family members say ortiz was lighting the explosive when it exploded prematurely. It was described as a professional grade firework. He had to have his right hand amputated. Lost Three Fingers on his left. People with small children and small pets are being warned to be extra watchful after two Mountain Lions sightings in less than a week. The First Sighting happened last tuesday. The second over the weekend in the san matteo highlands area. It is believed to be the same Mountain Lion. Also over the weekend, someone found the carcass of a deer believed to have been dinner for that big cat. Animal control took the carcass away. Took the fawn away. There was a baby who was, i dont know, a month old or so. Took her away to take care of her. A Mountain Lion was caught lurking near an Apartment Building and a collar revealed the cat had been hiding behind some bushes watching quite a few pedestrians and bicyclists for hours, but of course did not make contact. The project believes Mountain Lions are coming closer to where we live looking for water. The b. A. R. T. Extension could be delayed because of a spat. They planned to build a trench over the next eight months but that would mean closing the road. And the city denied their work permit. Told them to find a better way of doing this.
