mission. >> it comes as the mayor announced she is expanding a program to help combat crime. will it be enough? >> reporter: it has been a struggle for san francisco to improve its image and reality as a safe place to live and visit and this latest crime highlights what some say is a greater need for crime prevention. san francisco police say three suspects assaulted and injured a 79-year-old asian woman as she got off of a bus saturday afternoon. one of the many attacks in the city, some say they were targeted because of their nationality. >> at this time we do not know if this was a hate crime. >> reporter: no evidence right now but this points to another troubling trend. they are seeing more suspects. they believe the three suspects in the latest attack or just 12 years old. thmayor today said the city will expand the community ambassador program from 250-400. they are men and women placed in key areas around the city, they can communicate with officers. >> it is about working together to make san francisco a safer place for all of us. >> reporter: the vice president of the council of district merchants says he noticed a improvement since the program started. >> so far it is a step in the right direction. >> reporter: albert says in the long run the city needs to fill a huge number of officer bacon seats to fully address the crime problem. >> absolutely. >> reporter: they are having a tough time attracting new officers even though it offers more than 100 grand per year in pay and benefits. >> we have academy classes that are training as we speak. they have not been as robust or as large as in the past. >> reporter: the city could vote on a new measure very soon to increase officer pay even more in hopes of attracting more recruits to fill some of those 600 vacancies. nbc bay area news. no gun shops in redwood city for now. tonight city council members voted for a temporary ban on new gun stores. the city does not have gun shops now but at least two retailers applied to open one including one close to roosevelt elementary. that had parents upset. the city council created a ordinance that would stop any stores from opening. it could last 45 days but could be extended for up to two years. tonight police say they identified the woman who whose burning body was found on a hiking trail. she was 25 years old. investigators arrested two people of interest in relation to her death. her body was discovered burning in a small fire burning on a trail. >> it has been three weeks since a teenager was hit and killed on a freeway. this happened october 3 in the alan rock area. 16-year-old danielle lopez was hit in the southbound lanes of 680 near jackson street. she appeared to be running into traffic. they are asking for tips from anyone that may no what happened before she was hit. a woman was killed today after being hit by a car just before 11 am. two women were walking in the area when a man driving a car hit the women in his several other cars. one of the women died, the other was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. supervisor gordon says the driver was speeding and ran a stop sign at the intersection. >> it is mistreating that the number of draft traffic citations has gone down dramatically the last several years. it has been a increase of unsafe driving in the city. the driver of the car was also taken to the hospital. his injuries are not life- threatening. now to a story that made national headlines. a mercedes buried on the grounds of a estate but why? what we know tonight is that they ruled out that human remains were found inside that car. >> there is no indication that
