the teeth. >> you can hear the barrage of gunfire. jessica is off. there is a lot of tension locally and nationally. we just got an update from the dallas police department. it is now 1:00 a.m. in texas, this is the baylor university in texas, one of the police officers just rolled in. thousands of people were actually protesting police brutality, but a peaceful march was interrupted by gunshots. again, those are police officers being taken to the medical center. here is what we know, keep in mind this is all realtime information changing constantly. 11 officers shot, four killed. right now people are in custody, police are still searching for more. in fact at this late hour they're still negotiating with one suspect who is exchanging gunfire with the officer there is in downtown dallas. nbc bay area ian cole has more, ian, this is just the beginning. there are so many questions at this hour. what else did the police chief say? >> the police chief said there were 800 people at the peaceful rally. 100 officers were on roll there when shots were fired. police say two snipers were targeting police officers. you can see crowds of people running from the gunfire. 11 officers were shot, four of those officers have died. three of the officers killed were dallas police officers. one was a dallas transit officer. now the police chief says the snipers shot the officers from an elevated position during the rally. right now it's unclear if any civilians were injured. the police chief just within the last 30 minutes says they are negotiating with one of the suspects in a nearby parking garage and that suspect is armed and hostile. >> the suspect we are negotiating with that has exchanged gunfire with us over the last 45 minutes has told our negotiators that the end is coming. and he is going to hurt and kill more of us. >> reporter: the suspect also saying he has placed bombs throughout the garage in the downtown area. now police believe they have captured a female suspect as well as two other suspects who were chased by car onto the freeway by officers and stopped. they are currently being questioned. the bomb squad also trying to secure a suspicious device they found near one of the suspects. the atf, the fbi are on scene there. we'll continue to follow this breaking news and have an update in ten minutes, raj? >> okay, ian, thank you, so now the questions will continue to pour in. we've done this so many times. what is the motive for the shootings? why did the suspects go about this in this way? more live pictures coming in from dallas. a difficult night for the colleagues and families of the officers. once again, there baylor center where officers were÷óváp brough we've seen a stream of ambulances transporting the officers who were shot. again, four officers have died. now police officials just said their next briefing will come in the morning. we also expect president obama to make a statement as well. this has prompted police departments across the nation to change tactics. we saw the scene in oakland, we'll get back to that tonight. late tonight, san jose, police chief has ordered two officers per patrol car. this is very much a local story. here is the scene in oakland. protesters have shut down 880 near broadway. demonstrators made it onto the freeway and blocked cars. this comes after an evening of peaceful protests in downtown oakland. nbc bay area cheryl herd has more. what is the police response tonight and when do you think 880 will reopen? >> reporter: not sure about that. but there is a party atmosphere going on, on 880, they're dancing, singing, playing drums. it appears they will be there for a while. but here at opd headquarters there is a heavy police presence. police in riot gear protecting police headquarters. now although there is a heavy police presence here the protests leading up to the freeway shutdown, very peaceful. it was the ultimate show of defiance on interstate 880 against the recent killings of two african-american men by police. protesters making a point by stopping traffic on the busy highway. earlier tonight, the protest was centered at frank ogawa plaza. >> i live in a society where i'm expected to act a certain way, if not i could be shot dead. >> reporter: the killing of two african-american men, one in baton rouge, louisiana, the other a thousand miles away in falcon heights, minnesota. >> if i had a son today i would have to worry about him every single day of my life. >> reporter: protesters march from city hall to police headquarters. >> i need to support my black brothers and sisters who are being murdered in this country. >> reporter: a country and cities like oakland taking a stand against the problem no one has been able to solve. >> my mom is worrying about my death. >> every day. >> every day. >> my sister is worried about my death every day. >> so we want to make sure to take this national moment and continue to point to local police and say how are things going to change? >> so raj, to answer your question, we have no idea when the freeway will open. i don't know if you can see but it is still shut down at this hour. i have been talking to oakland police and they're really not saying much, just going about their business and trying to keep the calm. it has been calm out here. we have not heard of anything happening only that freeway shut down. now protesters say tonight that they want change, the people here are peaceful. but right now they're making a point on that freeway. it is still shut down. reporting live for oakland, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. and it's been more than two hours like this. traffic is backed up. protesters say there is not much active involvement from the oakland police department. so this goes in line with what cheryl is saying. this is a tactical move not to engage and to keep the protests peaceful. right there in downtown oakland, the freeway is a mess. if you can avoid it. this is really what sparked the nationwide protests tonight. two deadly police shootings. a woman in minnesota yesterday live streamed on facebook the final moments of her fiancee's life after police shot and killed him inside of their car. on this video she tells police that castile had just told the police he had a license to carry the weapon and that he had the weapon on him. she says he was reaching for his id when the officer then instructed him and shot him. two days ago, an officer shot a man outside a convenience store. a second cell phone shows the officer shooting the man in the chest. the justice department is now investigating. our digital team and entire news room are watching the entire developments not only in oakland but also in dallas, we're updating our push alert and will keep you updated on what is happening in dallas. we're also following breaking news on the peninsula in palo alto. police are investigating a suspicious death on creak side drive near the montessori school. jean elle has more from a lot of information neighbors. >> reporter: well, raj, there are police officers here from several different areas. take a look, this is still a very active scene. officers are assisting in what they call a suspicious death investigation. police say they found an adult resident dead inside and called police. something inside the home is leading police to call this is a suspicious death. they will not say how the person died or what makes it suspicious, but officers are expected to be here for hours collecting evidence. neighbors say it is a quiet neighborhood and at this point no one is sure who is dead. >> the preliminary very initial investigation leads us to believe there are suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. we're not prepared to say at this point if it was a suicide or homicide. >> seems that nobody knows the people who were living here. so we're a little curious who was involved. i think that is really what is on everybody's mind. >> neighbors are now turning in for the night feeling uneasy, not knowing how a neighbor died. police are trying to reassure people here saying they are not searching for a suspect and people are not in danger. so not a lot of concrete information from palo alto police at this point. but a large police presence as they're investigating what they call a suspicious death. reporting live in palo alto, jean elle, nbc bay area news. and good evening, i'm meteorologist jeff ranieri, an unusual july, we're tracking who has the best chance of wet weather in the forecast. we have been dealing with this for over ten years and how would you like to live next to this house? >> the sights and smells that have neighbors fed up with this home in the south bay. and we continue to follow our breaking news in dallas. 11 officers shot in a sniper attack, four police officers are dead. and in oakland, protesters have shut down 880 in both directions at broadway. it has been like this for two hours now. we'll be right back in two minutes. traffic is still at standstilon these are lives piure of e gridlock... traffic is still at a standstill at 880 and broadway. this is in oakland, you can see the cars barely moving there. these are live pictures of the grid lock all because of the protests over the deadly shootings in minnesota and baton rouge. this has been going on for a couple of hours now. police are not actively engaging, trying to keep this all peaceful. no word on when 880 will open again. and back to dallas, police are hunting for more suspects after two snipers it is believed shot 11 officers. now four of those officers were killed. right now at least three suspects were in custody, but police believe that more people are involved. ian cole is joining us, ian i know you have been tracking it realtime. they say they're actively involved with the suspects. >> reporter: yeah, raj, he is not cooperating clearly. they're exchanging gunfire inside the parking garage. they believe that he is one of the people responsible for the shootings tonight. crowds of people running from the gunfire. 11 officers were shot, four have died. the police were shot from an elevated position during the rally. now the police chief in the last 45 minutes said they were negotiating with the suspect who we were just talking about in a near parking garage. the suspect has claimed he has put bombs in the garage and in areas in downtown dallas. also at that police conference, the dallas mayor making a comment. >> to say that the police officers put their lives on the line every day is no hyperbole, ladies and gentlemen, it is a reality. we as a city, we as a country, must come together and lock arms and heal the wounds that we all feel from time to time. >> the city reeling as other officers continue to try and do their work. hunting down those suspects right now. there is one female suspect in custody, two suspects were chased by a car onto the freeway by officers and stopped. and as you see all of the patrol cars there, trying to secure the downtown. people in dallas are expected to head into work on the friday morning in just a few hours. but dallas police trying to secure the downtown of that parking garage and make sure that it is safe. they don't know that right now so we'll continue to update this story as we get new information, raj? >> okay, the question stands, why did the gunmen do this? you can stay with us for the latest in both dallas and oakland. we're sending out push alerts and dealing out other platforms. and federal agents now jo joining the investigation of that massive fire in emeryville, which destroyed over 100 apartments under construction. we learned the feds are exploring the possibility that renegade fireworks sparked the flames, happening just after fourth of july. the developer hopes to rebuild his property though in the next nine months. tonight the crews are spraying for west nile virus. crews are spraying this area, highlighted here roughly centered around guadalupe parkway and west capitol expressway. okay, to take you outside, a live look at the shark tank in san jose. that has been transported to gymnastic city, usa, they kicked off the pre competition fan fest today. the fans flocking to the south bay for a chance to meet the olympians as well as olympic hopefuls to get a spot to rio. >> i would go to my favorite. >> very nice, we'll see you in 2020 perhaps. gymnastic city will be opened to everyone throughout the weekend. no tickets needed. so the actual competition begins tomorrow but we have a look at it tonight. here is nbc bay area michelle roberts. gabby douglas admits the pressure is very intense, tomorrow she has a shot at her dream. today she practiced alongside her friends who were also competing for one of five spots on team usa. >> coaches were focused. and the athletes? >> it feels like we're flying. >> reporter: rio is expected to be the major competition for simone, who won the last four championships. >> we're trying to keep the legacy. >> reporter: a legacy that nicole hernandez is trying to be a part of. >> they have a lot of experience, i hope to fit in with them as well. >> reporter: she will be decided by nicole care akarolyi. they're a sold out crowd at the sap center. michelle roberts, nbc bay area news. >> they are the stars, we're just 29 days away from the opening ceremony. of course all the coverage exclusively on nbc bay area. we're sending our own jessica aguirre to rio monitoring the olympics. we're doing good. the forecast is certainly a little bit unusual for this time of year, though, you can see back here behind me we are tracking rainfall entering oregon, also getting close to california. we'll have the full track on who has the best chance of getting that in a moment. want to take you outside to the morning forecast. you will see the fall coming back from the peninsula, east bay, also san francisco, with areas of patchy drizzle. temperatures in the low 50s, probably the sunniest start at least the best chance of that happening right across the south bay. as we get a look at the micro climate forecast, this will put morgan hill at 80 degrees, san jose looking good at 79. and san francisco, a cool 63. north bay, east bay, tri-valley, immigra great day for danville. and walnut creek hotter, just not going to be strong enough to keep your temperatures way down. so you will see 80. the main thing cooling down our temperatures lately is this unusual dip in the jet stream. this is something we more likely should see in march, not in july. pushing all the way down to northern california. and the typical area of hot high pressure is way off towards the south. now associated with this area of low pressure, rainfall, a cold front, moving into california. no chance of rainfall in the bay area, i know a lot of you would like to get something here, despite the fact we're typically dry. of course the drought is in place. the best chance of getting any activity would be in crescent city. heading to northern california? watch out for the wet weather. otherwise for the bay area it stays dry with a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures gradually warm up by saturday and also sunday. not going to get too hot. temperatures continue to stay in the upper 70s to also low atsz. of course we're tracking more of this any time at nbc bay area.com. up next, an eyesore, neighbors complain about a home on their street. so what is the city doing about it?
