A long night for drivers and firefighters. After a fire shuts down highway 17. Were on a couple minutes late tonight because of the olympic trials here on nbc. Hot weather and fire danger. Heres the latest near los gatos. This fire started late this afternoon, along highway 17 in the redwood estates. A lot of homes nearby. Firefighters will be working through the night and much of tomorrow, securing this area. Really watching for hot spots. Amidst all of this, traffic has been a nightmare. Nbc bay area laura is eight miles from los gatos. Whats the concern this evening . Reporter hot spots are always a concern. But the fire is mostly contained. But no structures are damaged and drivers are starting to get relief. Im near highway 17 and bear creek road. One southbound lane is open and northbound lanes are open. But the southbound closure is south of here. And its expected to stay this way for quite a while. Red and friends were on their way to santa cruz when this happened. A major backup on 17, due to a brush fire. Its bad when theres fires. I think were going to turn a around and go home. Reporter along i17, many had pulled over to wait it out. I was home and had to get escorted the wrong way to get my kids from day care. From there, had no way to get back up. Reporter the fire started about 3 00 this afternoon. The fire spread to about 2 1 2 acres. But a Swift Response on ground and by air quickly stopped its progress. Helicopters dropping water from the nearby lexington reservoir. At 1 time, some 30 structures were threatens. The Community Around where the fire was at, and asked hem to leave if the fire were to spread. In all, 200 firefighters from area departments responded to the scene. One firefighter became sick while battling the blaze. Another suffered minor burns. Theres no problem damage. Thats all it was, its not the end of the world. Again, firefighters will be out here all night and much of tomorrow. One southbound lane of highway 17 remains closed. Firefighters ask you to avoid this area if you can. The good news is, both northbound lanes are open. The morning commute into los gatos should not be affected. Thank you, laura. Lets look at the hot weather and how that impacted firefighters across the area. Temperatures in the 90s. Dry conditions, humidity has made a recofferry. And the wind speeds have backed off. The city Council Voted to ban coal from being handled and stored in oakland. Ian cole is at city hall. A lot of people say this is job growth. Those that were for the coal ban, for the transport, it could have created hundreds of jobs. And the two side clashed in an emotional meeting tonight. Coal was on the stand in a heated trial in oakland city hall. 300 people showed up to speak. The meeting rampup featured dozens of people shouting at each other outside. The issue, whether or not to handle coal in oakland. There was an issue to bring in coal to the terminal and then, ship the coal to asia. But people called for a ban, saying that coal dust could cause respiratory problems for the people that live close to the site. Its exhausting living in west oakland, just to live, let alone to breathe clean air. Reporter those opposed to the ban said that coal would be covered and handled underground. This business is a business that would present thousands of jobs. Its not about coal. Its about really trying to help people. Tonight, the oakland city Council Voted to adopt the ban on coal. We do not need to decide between jobs and the health of our community. The majority of the people spoke for the ban on coal. The group that was preparing to ship the coal out of the site, will likely pursue legal action, as a result of this vote. Thank you, ian. A samesex couple said they were the victims of discrimination of an uber driver during pride weekend. The uber said he couldnt take them because he was out of gas. The couple said the conversation got heated and the driver shouted gay expletives. If youre going to sell a certain image to a certain person, you have to let your drivers so theyre okay with the same strategy that youre using. The Ride Share Company issued a statement saying uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination and we are looking into the incident. A group of men robbed three tourists and little did they know, there were undercover officers across the street. It was lucky the Police Officers happened to be there. And tonight, tourists snapping their pictures and making their way down lombard street, down this crooked, iconic part of lombard street had no idea. Walking in a group and in broad daylight failed to keep these tourists from becoming targets. This is where the crime takes place. Reporter just after 1 00 p. M. Saturday, surveillance captured these men get out of this chrysler and rob three women at gunpoint. The suspects followed them from lombard street. We are looking out for where the criminals are. A call to stop the rash of freeway shootings is calling on goffer brown to issue emergency funding to buy spot shot technology and surveillance cameras to deter or catch people committing the acts. 21 highway shootings have occurred since november, including one on highway 4 in pittsburg. Two suvs belonging to the Oakland Police department burst into flames on the weekend. An officer drove one of the ford interceptors into a pole during a chase. You see there, that suv quickly caught on fire. Less than 24 hours later, this police suv erupted in flames following a crash. Both officers were able to escape. But the fires are prompting oakland to ask the chp for help. We asked for assistance from them, having their traffic investigators assist us with identifying, what caused the fire . How can we prevent this . Investigators will look into a design problem or whether added equipment made those unsafe. Many Police Departments use the ford interceptors. Sheriff deputies served a search warrant for drugs and weapons. They had a drone flying overhead. While this was up, we spotted a suspect fleeing out the back. We were able to follow him and have deputies detain him without incident. The garage had been converted to a small casino. 14 people arrested. Officers were tipped off to the house by neighbors who complained about odd activity going on all day and night. This could be precedentsetting. Airbnb is suing San Francisco, to stop the city on enforcing new rules on rentals. Supervisors are trying to crack down on people to modify their own. They are modifying the law to police websites. The law says airbnb says people must remove people that have not registered with the city. Airbnb is trying to block the rules. A new state budget puts emphasis on helping the poor and giving money to universities. Governor brown signing off on the budget earlier today. The governor says the budget is, quote, solid. And sets aside billions of dollars to prepare for the next recession. A rainy day fund, so to speak. It ends a cap on welfare families with children. Loud cheers outside the Supreme Court after a texas law that put in so many regulations that it was having abortion clinics close down in texas was struck down by the high court. Its the most significant ruling on abortion in 25 years. Justice Anthony Kennedy joined in a 53 vote, saying the texas law poses obstacles without benefit. The law required abortion clinics to meet the say construction standards as surgical center. Other states have similar restrictions, some on hold. Prolife activists say they will go to the drawing board and work on approaches to prevent abortion. The destructive fire continues to burn near bakersfield. Evacuees are being allowed back to their properties to check in. The erskin has leveled 150 homes and charring 145,000 acres. Tonight, it is 45 contained. We have a great heat wave going on. Livermore and other spots that got up to 102 today. But half moon bay, about 40 degrees cooler, with some patchy, low clouds. You can see 82 was the high, in half moon bay, mountain view, and san jose. Having a tough time cooling off. 74 in livermore. Your a. C. May be on until 2 00 in the morning. Probably not going to get a lot of cooling for the inland valleys. Any fog that we see or the sea breeze impact tomorrow among the kos and the bay. 50s to 60s, over for the tri valley for the morning. And holding its ground through wednesday. Temperaturewise, inland valley soaring above 100 degrees through the middle part of the week. One other thing to watch is monsoon moisture. That can trigger lightning strikes in the central and southern sierra. Hopefully with the showers they bring rain in addition to thunder. 90 south of san jose. San francisco, upper 60s to low 70s. The hottest spots tomorrow, concord, and walnut creek, 105 trees. 102 in walnut creek and livermore. And our temperatures are staying hot, at least we think, through wednesday. And relief coming, towards friday and saturday. That high is going to move towards the east. That will allow temperatures to cool by friday and saturday. Thats a healthylooking sea breeze. Temperatures dropping into the 08s. And even the tri valley. Should see the temperatures drop in the mid to upper 80s, away from the upper 90s. Dublin and pleasanton for wednesday.
