new tesla model three. of course the unveiling came with lots of fanfare after years of anticipation, the world got its first glance at tesla's next big thing. we have reaction to tonight's highly anticipated unveiling. a lot of people plunked down a thousand dollars without even seeing it. what was the reaction when they finally saw it? >> this has been tesla's closely guarded secret. up until now people hadn't even seen the model three. >> elon musk pulled back the kurt on on the model he hopes will make it mainstream. >> i liked the lines on it. it's got a much different look than the previous models. >> i like that car. >> the model 3 will cost but $35,000 before government incentives. ets less than half the price of previous tesla models. >> i'm glad they finally made an affordable ones. >> i think it's outstanding looking for $35,000. electric car. i think that's a good deal. >> earlier today the promise of an affordable electric car had hundreds of people lined up to reserve one of their own. some even camping out overnight to pay a thousand bucks for a car they hadn't even seen. after the big unveil, many say it was worth it. what do you think? >> it looks awesome. i can't wait to see it in person. >> according to elong musk, the company has already received more than 115,000 preorders for the car. the model 3 doesn't go on sale until late next year. closer to production. >> acceptance week isn't getting an approval from everyone. an online petition says the middle school is putting an overemphasis on lesbian, gay and transgender issues. details on a curricular plan that some say goes too far. >> reporter: tonight it's the parents who are pushing back. they've started an online petition, even threatening a walkout if changes aren't made. more than 500 people have signed a change.org petition against a week of lessons coming up at wind mere ranch middle school that focus on tolerance for the lbgq community. some parents don't want a full week devoted to the topic. one parent wrote "there is a time for everything in life. i don't think middle school is the right time to expose kids to all this stuff." another commented "this is a discriminatory action fully biased in support of a particular group and not taking into account the views of our community." and a statement said "the idea came from the school's students leadership students who wanted to gain acceptance." we posted the school district's full statement on our web site. those many of the parents were active online, none of them wanted to talk to us on camera, at least those who we reached out to. however, the school district will hold a meeting with those parents tomorrow on this issue. reporting live tonight, ian cull, nbc bay area news. >> the state is releasing this sex offender tomorrow in petaluma. he did serve his sentence. his criminal history shows he's targeted girls and women anywhere from 13 to 50. officers say they will notify the public where hopner is placed once he checks in. >> and jean elle is live. >> the attorney says the text messages the police department uncovered are racist, but he said his client received them, he didn't send them. he saidis chient should have done more to stop them. >> he knew the officer who was involved and knew that the officer was married to an african-american woman, who had african-american children and because of that, he sort of felt assured that he was not dealing with someone who was racist. >> kelly brass is representing one of the four san francisco police officers involved in a racist, homophobic text message scandal. he said his client is not racist but should have done more to stop the offensive communications. >> he responded to one of the texts by saying you have to stop doing this. he said if i didn't know who you were married to, i would think you were a racist. with you that is not the same thing as going through an official protocol of discipline. the discovery came in the midst of another high-profile racist text scandal involving 14 san francisco officers. the chief says in the li case, he immediately suspended the four officers involved. >> since that time two of those officers have left the department the one of the officers is jason li. he's now criminally charged as of tuesday with six misdemeanor counts of misuse of a computer and a fourth officer is pending before the commission on charges up to and including termination. >> district attorney george gasgon said he learned about the charges last night. >> with a review under way, the chief sent a letter tonight detailing communications with the d.a.'s office, denying this is a new discovery while the politics play out. >> it brings up serious concerns. >> sergeant yolanda williams said the second scandal points to a larger problem within the department. >> a responsibility to assure we know what is going on so we are not caught off guard. >> reporter: the police department is weighing in saying the racist activity is appalling and does not reflect the department. >> a tornado hitting mississippi, one of several twisters that touched down in the southern region of the u.s. lots of debris but amazingly, no major damage and no injuries. the same system dropped a cyclone in northern alabama ripping through trees and power lines. emergency crews are seeing some damages to homes there. they're saying roofs and porches were blown off. no one was hurt. >> $3.5 million to repair a sinkhole. the sinkhole opened up on march 13th and crews have been working to fix it but the weather and other delays have gotten in the way. inspectors were able to get a clear view of the problem this week. the repairs, much more extensive and costly than anyone expected. >> a proposal to build condos on the property of the claremont hotel. plans were unveiled in berkeley. the parking lot will be transformed into a grand entrance with 45 new condos. the architect with pay homage to the hotel's history. the hotel sits just above the hayward fault line. if the proposal is accepted, construction wouldn't take place until 2018. >> green energy that may not be so green after all. i'm of millions of your dollars is now the focus of cutbacks recommended to state regulators. >> vicky nguyen. >> the state collects money from your pg & e bill to help fund new technologies. no company has benefited more than sunnyvale based blue energy but that cash line could be drying you. fuel cells like these made by bloom technology typically run on natural gas to produce energy, touted as a cleaner alternative to the traditional power grid, bloom's technology has benefited from $400 million in incentives but in a report published last last year, staff found electric fuel cells that run on natural gas pollute too much and are not worth further investment. the message confirms what we pointed out on our broadcast last year. >> we should not be having our money to prop up polluting technologies. >> the s-chip program has provided more than $1 billion in incentives to so-called green technologies. bloom energy received the lion's share of rate payers' subsidies. it is now recommended that funding no longer be provided for natural gas electric fuel cells. >> i'm really pleased that the staff at the public utilities commission took a close look at the evidence. >> marcel is an energy attorney for turn. >> turn strongly supports eliminating fuel cells that use natural gas and funding only clean distributed generations. >> reporter: the technologies that benefit from public incentives are supposed to cut carbon commissions but fuel cell technology fails to make the requirement that the cpuc approved last fall and say they failed by a small margin to be cleaner than the grid. >> reporter: the investigative unit first exposed in 2014 that bloom boxes were not much cleaner than california's grid, which already uses renewable power sources like wind and water. they were producing more -- >> the company declined an interview request to discuss the current proposal. the company continued the propos proposal. the company claims their latest technology has improved. >> these type of incentive programs are the foundation for the future. >> janice lynn's group represents companies that have recently started getting more s-chip funds. >> we live here and we have children that are going to grow up here. we want california to be as clean and affordable and livable as possible. >> in addition to electric fuel cells, the commission staff also recommends cutting funding to natural gas powered microtush binhs but in the meantime half of this year's program funds already have been given to companies that qualify under the old rules. . the commission has not said when it will decide whether to adopt the new rules. >> governor brown is set to sign a bill making the minimum wage $15 an hour. he's expected to sign the bill monday in los angeles. it was approved today by the state legislature. $15 will be the minimum wage but not until 2022. it will slowly increase from that amount going from $10 to $1.50 an hour on january 1st of next year. businesses with 25 or fewer employees will have an extra year to comply. >> the warriors are not only setting the bar for excellence on the court, the organization is doing the same off the court. north bay, san francisco 50, peninsula 47 and for the south bay 48. we'll have fog rolling in to san francisco and a few patchy areas of clouds for the south bay as well. high pressure offshore. that's been with us for the past several days. it's going to stay here for friday, saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday, even into wednesday of next week. that's going to keep for the most part a lot of the storm activity away and it's going to keep those temperatures up. let take another look at what we can expect. you're going to see on this particular graphic for san jose, we'll get our warmest saturday into sunday, most immediately with 73 and 74 respectively. a little built cooler on monday and check out this jump in temperatures up to 80 degrees by next wednesday. the thing about the heat is we're not expecting any kind of dry offshore winds so if you live at the coastline, can you expect rather cool weather at least through monday. once we hit next wednesday, we'll see temperatures go up but it not going to be in the 80s. you'll be at 74. let's take to you that microclimate forecast as we head throughout friday. we have the cooler weather in san francisco, 63 in the financial district and sunny skies. heading to the marina, toward the golden gate bridge. it's going to feel chilly when that wind picks up. for the south bay, low 70s all around. san jose 72 and sunny. morgan hill expecting 71. for the north bay, east bay and for the tri-valley, we have fantastic weather up in the wine country. if you're going there, have fun. 71 degrees tomorrow. back in the mill valley, 78 in the east bay, 8 degrees warmer with 73 degrees. 74 in the south bay, 73 on sunday, san francisco stays in the 60s and for the tri-valley, we'll have low 70s. this will be even better at least for me if we could get some rainfall and it looks like eventually we'll see the chance of that returning, just a slight chance for the north bay on monday, a spotty shower. but better potential of rainfall by april the 12th and the 13th. we're going to keep monitoring this and we'll have updates in the coming days. >> up next, a killer pain killer. a warning about a kill that's being liepged to
