you know what that is? that is the 49ers arriving home. this is not the homecoming they were hoping for. but the fans have one morsel bra brags in mind. police were on high alert as fans gathered to watch the game in local bars and restaurants. fans are there waiting to welcome the team back? >> reporter: that's right. the first fans showed up at 8:00. there are dozens of people waiting, signs in hand. they are waiting for the team to arrive here. the 49ers faithful said think wanted the team to know, win or lose, they are loved. they can expect a very warm welcome from these fans who drove from all over the bay area to be here. they say the team deserves to be celebrated for how far they got in the post-season. many blame today's loss on bad calls by the refs. >> i do think territory plays a big part in it. the noise probably does get to their head. i feel like the refs were being a little unfair too. that may be because it's my team and i want to believe that. >> it hurt when we had two key players go out. it affected the players. i know affected us, the fans. but it's all right. we'll get them next year. >> it's just been great. the frozen tundra, come on. it was so cold out thayer. and they made it through. they went to carolina, a lot of people didn't think they were going to make it and they did. they went to seattle. we almost had it. we almost had it. it was just right there. >> reporter: while fans hoped for a different outcome, they say they are truly proud of this team and already looking forward to starting the next season. right now they waiting for the buses to arrive and pull right in here so they can welcome them home. >> they probably have ten to 20 minutes to wait would be my guess. san francisco police were bracing for rowdy fans in the streets win or lose, but perhaps because of the loss, it has been a relatively quiet night so far in san francisco. monty francis is live in the mission district with the fans' reaction. >> reporter: police were hoping for the best and prepared for the worst. they got what they were hoping for. the party just fizzled out and so did the crowds once the game was over. >> niners, baby, yeah! >> reporter: it started with a roar and ended with a womhim pe. thousands of niners fans poured out of the bars and just went home. >> it's great cheering them on this far. >> i'm horrified. i'm shocked. the 49ers have let us down this year because we are on the quest for six. >> reporter: police were out in big numbers in the mission district tonight much like they were last year after 49ers' super bowl loss to the ravens. not far from the mission in lower haight, there was a lot of celebrating, but no problems >> let's go, baby. >> reporter: happy their team is headed for the super bowl, but for the niners' faithful, there's no loss of home pride. >> we're strong. we'll come back, and we'll win. >> reporter: and san francisco mayor ed lee released a statement that reads we would have liked a different outcome, but we are grateful for the team's amazing last season candlestick park this year and will forever be remembered for the thrills and excitement on the field from the first game to the last. police say there were a few arrests. they did say there were no major incidents to report. live in san francisco, monty francis, nbc bay area news. and after the game, 49er players and their head coach talked about the heart breaking loss. >> colin and all our guys, they're great football players. they've got good fight. what more could a coach ask for. and they truly believed it. you know, one drive, one touchdown drive, and we move on. that's what our guys believed would happen. we came up short. >> yeah. you turn the ball over. you don't give your team a opportunity to score. >> anytime you lose it's tough. you know, we all want to win. losing is never easy, especially when you're this close. it's a tough loss, but we'll bounce back. >> tonight's loss could sting well into next season. one of the team's best defensive players was seriously injured and may not be able to play next season. early reports say it appears bowman tore his acl on this play. you can see him grab the ball. but the receiver was then pushed into bowman's left leg. bowman had to be taken off the field in a cart. similar injuries have sidelined some players for more than a year. and tonight some people are criticizing comments made after the game. it was really the key play that ended the 49ers' hope for a trip to the super bowl and in a post game interview, sherman went on a rant against crabtree. >> i'm the best corner in the game. when you try me with a sorry receiver like crabtree, that's the result you going to get. don't you ever talk about me! >> who was talking about you? >> crabtree! don't you open your mouth about the best. >> after the game, michael crabtree had little to say about sherman. but later on twitter he replied and said quote film don't lie. pull up the tape of that game and show me where this guy is the best. >> on a different note, this picture of a very little niners' fan says it all. today, not happy. all right. she's not alone. and even though the one is not looking forward to this, to the super bowl between the seahawks and the broncos. the warm weather is in for a little bit of a change. here's a live look at downtown san francisco and the trans-america building. our meteorologist joins us with more. what do you have? >> we do have some good news. we've been talking about how dry it's been, but as we head through the upcoming week we're going to go through a transitional stage that's going to set the stage for the potential for some rain here as we head for the last full week of january. we're not talking about any showers or any cloud cover for the most part. we will wake up to a fog-free morning tomorrow. it's a double barrel low pressure system that's eventually going to open the storm door. but in the short term of things it will eventually bring the fog back. but tomorrow will be a fog-free morning. it's not until tuesday and wednesday when we talk about the fog being more widespread. and by wednesday we'll talk about a chance for weekend showers. and tonight, people living near a busy rail crossing are calling for action after a girl was hit and killed flight front of her school. she was riding her bike across the track when is she was hit at an intersection in front of del mar high. it's unclear whether there was a guard there when she have was hit. neighbors say what is clear is that something has to change. >> a lot of security, you know, as far as the bar and the railing. kids need to be more aware of how dangerous it is to challenge trains and so north. >> there's a lot of kids in this area. the speeding should be a little bit lesser around here. more crosswalks at the vta because we cross the street. some cars don't want to stop. they get mad and stuff like that. >> grief counselor are set to be on hand when classes resume on tuesday. two men were found shot to death inside a car on 100th avenue. one person drove away from the scene after the shooting. police have not released any suspect description or possible motive at this point. two high school basketball coaches have been fired in the wake of hazing allegations. and a high profile san francisco attorney is now involved in the case. two players on the woodside basketball team were beaten, gagged and duct taped to chairs by teammates during a road trip last month. we could not reach the district superintendent for comment, but he told the chronicle the incident was extremely unfortunate. now chris dolen says he's considering action against the district. he made head lielines recentl l the attorney for jahi mcmath. and strong warnings from the federal health officials. the flu outbreak in america hits a new level. tonight terrorism experts are examining a possible new threat to the upcoming olympic games in russia. the threat comes in the form of a video and a surprise during the games. >> reporter: this video is the last testimony of the calm young men. they documented what they were about to do, step by step and sometime later. those men, according to the video, killed dozens of civilians at a train station in volgograd and on a bus over the new year. they said volgograd was just the first wave. the next attacks will bring, quote, a surprise to the olympics. but why attack during the olympics? an ancient festival of pace? mostly revenge. russia is fighting a low-level war in the caucasus. the republic of dagestan is especially violent, and that's where the suicide bombers said they're from. the winter olympics aren't really the target, russia is. the games are just an opportunity to grab attention and try to harm vladimir putin. officials tell us the olympic park itself will be secure but worry there could be an attack somewhere else. the navy awarded honors to two saylilors killed in duty. they were killed in 2012. the marine corps says their actions and the ensuing firefight allowed others to escape. the navy cross is the highest honor. health officials are urging anyone six months and older who has not yet got and flu shot to get one now. officials are investigating another 50 cases. the centers for disease control now describes the outbreak as epidemic levels. it's not unusual for flu cases to spike in january. but we're told this year's h1n1 strain is infecting and killing an unusually high number of people. paramedics are being forced to wait to bring patients into the er in texas. >> the flu is the worst it's been. i've been a paramedic for 15 years. this is the worst i've seen it in 15 years. >> the cdc says fewer than half of americans usually get a flu shot, but doctors say it's not too late to protect yourself. authorities say three men are in custody in relation to a forest fire. about 1100 firefighters are battling the flames that have burned 2,000 acres so far. about two dozen homes and other structures have been damaged or destroyed as well. but so far, there have only been a few minor injuries. >> the firefighters did a great job. want to thank them for all their hard work and effort. >> very thankful for saving our little community. >> the wild fire is about 80% contained. and right now it is weird these fires going on in the middle of winter. what's going on, anthony? >> we are talking about another week where we are going to be tracking the potential for high fire danger. even though it's not going to be as warm as it was last week, we're still talking about temperatures in the 70s in the inland valleys. right now we're looking at clear skies for the most part. it's 49 degrees in the south bay with traffic moving. we'll wake up with 40 degrees, and by 1:00, already back in the 60s. the bridge all lit up, no fog to speak of. and temperature, again, as we wake up tomorrow morning will be back in the lower 40s in san francisco. near 60s by 1:00. another bright day on the way for tomorrow. and as we head through the upcoming week, the high pressure is going to break down a little bit more each and every day. that will allow for the onshore flow to return and the fog back. for tomorrow, a bright day, really no cloud cover. low 70s for the south bay, for morgan hill over to san jose. the peninsula, you'll see a mix of 60s and 70s. over toward san francisco, a little warmer than where we were today. we're going for 68 in the embarcadero. north bay, east bay and tri valley, we're going to find a mix of 60s and 70s, oakland, 68 degrees tomorrow. livermore at 70 for your daytime high. now the good news, our air quality really does start to improve as we head through the upcoming week. you can see on the seven day forecast from san francisco's perspective, a few clouds as we head through tuesday and wednesday. saturday and sunday, this is where we're going to see the clouds increase and the potential, for yes, maybe some showers. the computer model doing a good job of pinpointing where this is going to go. this is going to be something we're tracking as we head through the upcoming week. of course you can always go to nbcbayarea.com for that forecast. the 49ers are arriving right now at their training facility. we can see the buses arriving. >> reporter: that's right, you can see these buses carrying the team. they're just arriving here at the 49ers' training facility to a boisterous crowd. some of these fans arrived shortly after the game was over. they said they had to be here to cheer on their team. they said their team deserves to be celebrated for how far they got. in the last 15 minutes, we've seen more people come here to make sure they were on site to welcome these buses in. the buses will unload here and the players and coaches will then head out and head home, something they're probably looking forward to after this very long day. they are now heading into a covered parking lot, so we won't be able to see them get out of the bus. and we're not sure yet, if they are going to speak to us or even stop to talk to the fans. but of course if they on the first play from scrimmage, but in the fourth quarter, the 49ers kicked themselves, giving up a lead and turning the ball over three times. >> i thought our guys had tremendous fight. i think our guys are great football players. and congratulations to the seattle seahawks who were also in this arena and won the football game and are moving on. >> we just didn't make the plays today. we just got to look at the film and see what we got to do better. >> marshawn lynch's run was longest all season. this pass was the longest allowed by san francisco during these playoffs. >> we still have a great team. we got here and didn't quite pull it off the way we expected to, but, like i said before, you know, we can get excited about next season because of the guys that we have. >> you know, with all the training offseason is for. all the comradery each year, you put in there working, you say you know what, this is the reasoyear. i have no reason to think next year will not be our year. >> reporter: the players know the same team will not return next year. most notably, donte witner and antoine bolden are scheduled to be free agents. bolden says he's not ready to think about mom tried vaseline and hair spray and all that stuff. my hair is just very unruly by nature. >> the soon to be 60 year old is what you might call a velvet hammer. polished and educated with a heavy dose of street kred, a man who once patrolled l.a. during the 1992 riots. >> i worked some of the roughest neighborhoods that you could work and i did it with a great deal of proud and charisma, because they were neighborhoods very similar to where i grew up in. ? and where he grew up? he fled cuba in 1967. >> i have mixed feeling, you know, i think that we are, by and large, we have been successful if you define success in economic terms as a group of people. but i think there's still a lot of frustration. we still carry a lot of baggage about, you know, when we left. >> was there a moment that changed your life when you said hey, i want to get on the good track here? >> for me it was the military. actually what happened was i was working, and i was having a lot of fun surfing. school, obviously, was getting more and more remote. i was missing more and more until i dropped out completely, but i was fortunate enough that you could still get into the military by getting a ged. i got a ged, got into the military. and then it was in the military that i got my high school diploma and started going to college. and my mentors at that point were superior officers that saw in me probably something that i wasn't seeing anymore. >> is there a resentment, have you felt it at all, that former police chief here and now the d.a. that in many ways, the d.a.'s supposed to be a watchdog of the police department, but at one point you were the pleaolic department? >> i think we're beyond that. for people who know me well, i'm one of the harshest critics. for those who knew me well saw this as a really good thing. >> fair or unfair criticism that you're a lawyer, you a're d.a. here, but you've never tried a case. >> some of my opponents brought it up in the election process. there are airlines that have never run a jet, but they can run the airlines. there is distinction. >> would you be happy staying here long term in the bay area? >> i would be extremely happy. my wife and i are very committed to the area. we love the city. this is home for us. >> this is high profile. >> she's a lot smarter than i am, too. >> his wife, local spanish tv anchor. >> we posted the interview on our website. president obama says he thinks marijuana is not as dangerous as alcohol. but the president is not pushing for legalizing pot. in an interview with "the new yorker," the president urged a cautious approach to changing laws. he said he used marijuana when he was young, but he doesn't encourage it, calling it a waste of money and time and not very healthy. and the plans to limit the data gathering abilities of the nsa. the president is asking congress for new rules on how data will be gathered and used. some lawmakers say he didn't do enough, and the former head of the nsa says the president really doesn't want to change much more than perception. >> i believe in going after the bad guys. anreali and i realize this is an entirely different level of bad guys. >> you've got a political problem. i don't mean to trivialize it. he needs consent of the governed. >> meanwhile, the heads of the house and senate intelligence committees suggested today that nsa leaker edward snowden had been working with russian intelligence when he was gathering information. we've heard the warnings for target and neiman marcus customers who were hacked. experts are saying even if you didn't shop at those stores you should take extra steps to protect your credit. you might even consider not using debit cards at all. another option, consider putting a freeze on your credit so no one pretending to be you can apply for a card. and they say to pay close attention to statements. >> you have to pay close attention and make sure every action is one you initiated. >> be careful on checking your credit reports, that can affect your credit score. and keep an eye out for your friends and family. they are always a favorite target. as the bloody civil war of continues on, members of the syrian government are planning to attend a summit. >> reporter: in this destroyed suburb of damascus, these boxes of food may be the difference between life and death. this girl is saving the taste of sugar and milk. people are caught between the two sides of syria's bitter civil war. the food boxes are a gesture, allowed through by the syrian government at country's warring factions get ready to meet in switzerland later this week. today russia's news agency quoted him saying if we wanted him to surrender we would have surrendered from the start. this issue is not under discussion. though syrian tv later described his quote as inaccurate. whatever he did or did not say, it's clear the gulf between the two sides preparing to meet is huge. >> both side, including their backers in haiti. how they are using their voices. and it's a story that makes us bay area proud. coming up next. in january of 2010, the news cycle was dominated by a single event, but now four years later, you might not remember what it was, it was the devastating 7.0 earthquake in haiti. and since then, attention has drifted to other crises in the world, but not so for some girls in the bay area. >> reporter: deep in the hills, there's a home that's been labeled the greenest in america. perhaps it's no surprise then that in such an extraordinary structure you will find three extraordinary sisters. ♪ >> the holly girls, kylie, devin and piper have recently formed their own rock band. they call themselves zeuster. it is however what they've been doing for years now that makes them stand out. you could say these three have been humanitarians almost as long as they've been human. >> well. >> well. >> you go ahead. >> we were kind of born into a family that likes to help people. >> reporter: their impact can be seen online with a website they developed called earth savers for kids. their impact can be seen in the community. but their latest endeavor is by far their most distant and most ambitious. in 2010, a magnitude 7 earthquake devastated haiti. the country, the poorest in the western hemisphere was in difficult straits before the quake, so it is little surprise four years later there is still much to be done. and while much of the world's attention has moved on to other causes the girls are still dealing with this one. >> they are dealing with years of poverty on top of the devastation of the earthquake. >> reporter: they have pledged to raise $250,000 through the sales of a record they have released on their own record label of course. invitation to dream is a collection of lullabyes sung by devin. the money will go to help build an orphan and for the children of haiti. they have already raised $10,000 toward their goal. the girls manage to do all this and still find time for school, sports, even woodworking. they say they realize even at this young age they've been blessed to have so much. and the giving back, they assure everyone, is just beginning. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. all right. we have our micro climate forecast. and i feel very unworthy after watching that. >> you never know where they can take off. look at us. diane and us, following our dreams, right? let's talk about your forecast right now. we're in the 30s and 40s for the most part. but the thing you're going to find here across every meicro climate zone is that we are clear. the afternoon highs will warm very, very quickly, back to near 70 degrees in san francisco and in the lower 70s for the inland valleys. you'll notice waking up with clear skies, temperatures in the mid-60s by noon. lower 70s by 5:00. by the drive home, close to 70 degrees. san francisco, year to start, but the temperature will really spike at lunchtime. and the ocean breeze starts to kick in. and that will cool things down. mid-60s for the lunchtime and for the drive home, in the mid-60s to near 70 degrees. high pressure is in control, but this thing is actually starting to weaken as each and every day this week it's starting to break down. by tuesday we'll start to see more of a stratus form as we head through the morning hours each and every day. but for tomorrow, fog free. tuesday, that's when the fog really starts to build in and hug the area bridges. that's the day you'll have to use caution on some of the area roadways. and then by wednesday i think we will have a better chance of what may be hideaded our way in the form of rainshowers. this is probably the most rain that we've actually seen, the computer model pick up on all yearlong. if this continues to hold together as we head through sunday and monday of next week, this could be some of the most rain that we've seen all yearlong. and of course, you can see the averages stand very tall at least for where we should be. we usually average 4 inches in january and february. and we've only got .01 of an inch this year. hope is not lost. we could get some rain in the next couple weeks as we move into february, we could shrink that deficit. >> let's hope so. coming up next, a documentary maid hede here in ty area is up for an award. and we've only got .01 of an we now know who will join jimmy teenager. >> i kicked him in the forehead. >> and left him for dead on the street. >> reporter: 25 years off the attack, their paths crossed and they embarked on a long journey of forgiveness. that needed to be told. >> one of our big goals was to get it out there for educational purposes, for institutions, schools, museums. >> reporter: "facing fear" was shot in los angeles, but everything else was done in berkley. tom christopher is the co-producer and editor of the film. >> how do you talk about forgiveness? how do you show a film about forgiveness without making it something that's not a very interesting movie? >> reporter: it caught the eye of the academy. and who knows? it could end up a winner. >> it's a bay area film, and we're happy that we can take a bay area film down l.a. for the oscars. and coming up, dozens of whales have been rescued. some very good news tonight for about two dozen pilot whales that were briefly stranded near naples, florida. biologists tagged the whales and pushed them out back to the sea. >> they're not moving much. and seem to be distressed a little bit in their swimming pattern, so just very not normal for this area. >> a lot of concern. biologists are trying to determine what caused the group to become stranded. but, again, most of the whales have now hided back out to sea. and thanks for of whatting nbc bay area news. we're going to
