Glp h. Welcome back. There are plenty of sky high salaries as you would expect to find them on the payroll of the private companies. Some local city workers are making upwards of 300,000 a year and its money thats coming out of your pocket. Investigative reporter vicki n nnguyen analyzed the data. We looked at data and found a spike in the number of employees taking home huge payouts. The president earns 400,000 a year. Not bad, but not as good as what some city and county workers in california are making. According to new figures more than 100 city and county workers statewide earned more than the president last year. Thats up from 68 in 2011. The biggest paycheck went to an Orthopedic Surgeon who brought home more than 1 million. In the bay area, some of the highest paid workers were a City Attorney in Pleasant Hill who made 465,000, a county administrator in alameda who took home almost 464,000. A fire chief, 461,000. And a fire chief in millbriet, almost 417,000. Anytime theres a highly compensated individual, you have to ask whether or not that person is appropriately compensated. Kathy fong with California Common cause says its not just basalry, bonuses and overtime also say a lot about how your money is being managed. When overtime starts to eck seed your own base pay, then you have to ask whether or not the city is making good judgments. We found many of the top overtime earners were right here in the pay area. And a muni worker earned 146,000 in overtime, along with his 111,000 basalry. One of the biggest payouts was a transit manager being paid more than 200,000, adding to a 98,000 basalry. What it says to me is that these compensation levels are rising and theyre rising unchecked. Citizens are not calling us out. California common sense says examining public salaries is one way to prevent cities from heading towards bankruptcy. If you think back to stockton and vallejo, they werent having these conversations before they declared bankruptcy. Its only after the fact that we tend to wake up and say hey, this new compensation levels are simply unsustainable. For most City Emergency Services are responsible for the lions share of overtime costs. But thats not the case in santa clara. Thats where we found the most overtime was paid to electrical utility workers. A total of 2. 8 million last year. Thats more than the 2. 3 million in overtime paid to police, fire and all other city workers combined. When the overtime exceeds the base pay, some of the consumer advocates we talked to said thats a bit of a red flag. Perhaps the time of this worker is not being managed well. Whats your response to that . Well, having a lot of overtime is certainly not sustainable. This manager says overtime has been high over the past two years because of a boom in development, including the in uh niners stadium. But he says his department is trying to hire more workers to reduce overtime, adding its the rate payer who covers salary costs. I firmly believe that santa clara and Silicon Valley power is doing the best they can to meet the demands of customers and continue to provide safe and reliable power. Meanwhile, government watchdogs say its important for public agencies to balance their promises to workers with fiscal responsibility for taxpayers. And the attention that people are now giving to public compensation is an important one. It allows us to gauge what the public is willing to spend for a good talent.
