People watch the helicopters fortify the fire breaks this afternoon. Saying the smoke from the fire is affecting them. In the morning, heavy, thick smoke. Hard to breathe. Reporter the imposters have struck again. This time in hillsborough, late this afternoon. A man in south hillsboro, answered a strange phone call from someone claiming to be a d. E. A. Agent. And trying to extort money out of the victim. Reporter it wasnt a d. E. A. Agent. It was an imposter. They told the victim they ordered a Prescription Drug over the internet and that its a violation of the law. The victim had purchased the Prescription Drug online. But during the call, a red flag. At that point, the person on the phone was trying to set up some method of payment. Whether it be credit card or wire transfer. And the resident ended the phone call and called us. Reporter she buys Prescription Drugs online. She had no idea the scam was going on. We rely on technology for greater access. And were getting to a point where we have to think about how do we make it a safer transaction. Reporter Hillsborough Police say the victim in this case was lucky. No money was lost. But a couple of months ago, someone in San Mateo County was scammed to the tune of 14,000. While the d. E. A. Is trying to figure out if hackers are getting personal information from drug sites, Hillsborough Police say under no circumstance will someone from Law Enforcement ask you for money over the phone. They say this particular scam can throw people off at first. There is that small bit of real information that the callers providing the victim. In the initial stages of the phone call, the victim drops their guard a little bit. They may have made purchases over the internet. Reporter impersonating a federal agent is a violation of federal law. You get a phone call of one posing as one and asking money, refuse the call and call police. You can call the number of the d. E. Someone posing as an Animal Service officer, looking for snakes. A con man tricked a woman going into her backyard, while an accomplice stole her cash and jewelry. City Animal Service employees drive official city vehicles, carry photo i. D. S and arent looking for snakes in the community. A similar scam was reported in union city. A new move intended to keep kids safe and parents at ease. Governor brown required background checks for volunteer coaches. Its intended to make a background check policy. The goal is to help kids from sexual abusive or violent coaches. The California Assembly passed the bill unanimously. Eight years in prison. Thats the sentence for a san mateo child psychologist who pled no contest to molesting boys. He sat shackled in a wheelchair, while victims read impact statements. One said, youre disgusting. Prosecutors say he molested the boys during counseling sessions back in the 90s. The styrofoam takeout boxes may be gone at san jose restaurants. City leaders will consider banning styrofoam containers. The containers are harmful to the environment and that Something Else can be used instead.
