>> reporter: raj, while many major sports stadiums around the country are located near large airports, the new 49ers stadium in santa clara is somewhat unique. it's located less than three miles away and directly in the final flight path of mineta san jose international airport. but apparently few people explored what that might mean for air traffic controllers and homeland security in the area. that is until we started asking questions. right off the end of runway's 12-r and 12-l, the 49ers beautiful stadium is hard to miss. but according to several sources within the aviation and local emergency management community, it was only once the stadium started rising in the distance did top officials begin exploring the implications of 68,000 fans packed into a stadium located right off the end of two major runways. >> to have communication to even fly near that airport in the first place. >> reporter: willie turner has been flying private airplanes all over the bay area his entire life. he serves as vice president of operations at hiller aviation institute. >> when ever there is a football gym on or a baseball game, or any large gathering of people at a stadium, they put into what they call temporary flight restrictions. and those are tfrs. >> reporter: the faa confirms that a tfr will be in place over santa clara stadium whenever there is a football gym or other big event. but as this video shows, commercial flights literally pivot right over top of the new stadium when landing from the north south on to runways 12-l or 12-r, at mineta san jose. and with tv helicopters, banner planes and the occasional blimp hovering overhead, that could make for crowded skies and a much heavier work load for air traffic control. >> it's the landing -- if they're landing 12, i don't know what they'd do. they'll have to think about that. >> reporter: the trouble is three different aviation sources tell us not a lot of thoughts that gone into that so far. they believe commercial air traffic landing over the new 49ers stadium during a game could significantly raise air traffic controllers' work load and procedures, procedures the faa confirms they are only now beginning to work out. >> commercial aviation gets priority over everything. so they're not going to change that. >> reporter: faa spokesman ian gregor confirms that, saying, quote, we wouldn't allow any activity that interferes with arrivals or departures out of san jose. but the sources we spoke with remain skeptical and concerned. they say local air traffic controllers were not consulted or included in the aviation planning around the stadium. and look at these drawings, which show parts of the new stadium like light towers and antennas exceeding the maximum height originally allowed in this faa study. the faa says those height limits have been studied individually and do not pose any threat to safety. >> but of course, that was a consideration for things like general aviation to ensure that we during game days we would coordinate appropriately. >> santa clara mayor jamie matthews says the city has been planning for many of these issues long before the new stadium was even announced. >> absolutely. that's part of the overall security plan is to ensure that we have appropriate flight path and clearance, and we work very closely with san jose international airport, the faa, and of course with our public safety team. >> now, mayor matthews admits that the security plan for the stadium is still a work in progress. and that all these answers have yet to be finally worked out and finalized. but he does say he is confident they will have the details finalized by the end of this year. raj, jessica? >> very interesting. thank you, steven. if you have a tip for stephen stock or anyone else in our investigative unit, give us a call at 88-996-tips. or send an e-mail directly to the unit at nbcbayarea.com. business is sweet for some small bay area companies who are busier than ever because of the super bowl. the 49ers spirit is baking in san francisco's fillmore bake shop. look at that. it's a chocolate mousse filled chocolate football. 49er macaroons and gold cookies. father and daughter co-owner tell us business has certainly picked up since the team made the football. >> he is making the super bowl football cakes. maddie is doing the red and gold french macaroons. i'm doing sugar cookies right now. we just finished up some niners cupcakes. and that's pretty much as we could get out. >> and everything looks delicious. also look at this. brenda's french soul food says business is booming for foodies looking for a taste of new orleans in san francisco. the restaurant overwhelmed with catering orders from sunday for fans looking for creole comfort. and it's not just die-hard fans stopping by either. >> like the last few years, we always think it's going to slow down when the game starts. but when the game starts, all the people who hate football come in, because they are like oh, it won't be crowded. so then we have all our lovers and our haters. >> brenda says if you can't make to it the restaurant before the game, come in afterward. get their jambalaya. she said it's good for a hangover after a big night of celebrating. that who you're ordering the food from for the party you're inviting me? >> our big party. >> for a very, very small group of fans, it will be their 47th trip to the super bowl. that's perfect attendance. >> wow. >> nbc bay area's laurence scott introduces us to a san francisco man who has seen it all. >> and that was one of the controversial calls. >> reporter: larry jacobson of san francisco has been a 49ers season ticketholder for decades, dating back to the team's days at kezar stadium. he is now in new orleans for the gym on sunday, having been to each of the niners' previous super bowls. but the streak doesn't start there. he is part of a very unique club, just one of three paying fans to have attended each and every super bowl. and it all goes back to the first game when the ticket price was $12. and a true love affair with the super bowl began. >> at that time, it was easy to get a ticket, naturally. and i took a date. and she wasn't impressed with either football or with me. so that was the first time. i took a couple of dates to the super bowl over the years. i went to super bowl xi with my wife, and she said okay, no more dating. see ya. >> so he tied the knot and kept going to the super bowl year upon year. the face value of the tickets have increased many times over. but nearly 50 years of memories are well worth it, especially with the niners making their sixth appearance. but it was the team's very first that he holds dearest. >> i have to say xvi was my favorite. it was the first one. it was unexpected that we would get there. and the fact that we were there was miraculous in ways and the fact that we won it was even more miraculous in ways. so yeah, that was the most fun. >> reporter: and you have to wonder, is there a number he is hoping to reach or a cap on the journey that has been predetermined? >> the two men i go with say after l, i don't know if ifft to go anymore. i say that's baloney. when you get to 50 i'll call and say do you want reservations and you're going say yes. i'm just going to keep going until i don't know what i'm doing. >> reporter: so sunday larry and about 73,000 of his closest friends will be checking out the niners and the ravens. we'll be here too. we'll have a full report for you coming up tomorrow from the awards show. and then it's super sunday. laurence scott at the superdome. send it back to you in the studio. >> boy, that is amazing and impressive. >> he would be a good friend to have. larry, if you ever need a wing man or a wing woman. >> if someone drops out, we'll be there. >> let's bring in jeff ranieri, our chief meteorologist. this is a fun weekend, and we're here. >> it's going to be really nice. we are going to get some clouds and then eventually we'll get some sun. right now it is cooling off in the north bay with 45 in novato. 45 in santa rosa. a little warmer in the south bay with 50 in san jose. but the biggest change, these over the past 6 to 12 hours has been the winds. they went from the dry offshore wind to now more of a southerly component. not only going to import cooler weather for the weekend, but look at this, for the first part of the weekend cloud cover moving from from the south. that's going to be shrouding up these the first part of your saturday. let's take you live outside our hd sky camera network. you can see poor air quality towards the bottom of the screen. but if you look straight up tonight, you're going to notice that increased cloud cover. also in san francisco, this isn't pollution at the lower levels. that's actually some stratus. that low-lying fog beginning to move into san francisco. and those city lights shining bright. probably a big night out on the town tonight with a lot of people celebrating hopefully a niners win here as we head throughout sunday. i don't want to jinx it. i'm just saying. we do have the system offshore as we head throughout saturday. it's going to be dry. no rainfall from it. but again, that increase in cloud cover, at least for saturday that looks like the cloudiest day on your weekend. with this onshore flow returning, we'll get some fog at the coastline. temperatures drop into the 50s. and after low to mid-70s today, down in the south bay, you're also going to be dropping here to the 60s for the interior valleys. but here is the other hitch. while temperatures are going to be cooling off, we'll get the cloud cover that air quality is going to stay pretty bad for the central and the east bay. we're not going to have a lot of wind to stir out this poor air quality. it will be the worst, once again in the central and the east bay with a spare the air day in effect. as for the morning hours, you'll also notice it will be warmer in the south bay with the cloud cover overhead. 43 in the almaden valley. 43 in los gatos. colder for the north bay. 36 in santa rosa and also expecting 38 in nap pal. as far as your daytime highs go, on saturday will be that hazy sunshine. cloud cover for the morning and by the afternoon, some filtered sunshine. but notice these temperatures. not nearly as warm as it was today. 67 in the almaden valley. 62346 gilroy. 6 in san francisco with 62 in san francisco. now let's take a look at the 49ers forecast here for sunday. we've got it back here for the bay area. if you have a barbecue kicking off here, throughout the game, maybe you're outside, you have a big screen tv going, you're just enjoying it, the most sunshine with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 60s. and the coincidental thing is the forecast in new orleans isn't going to look a lot different from this. so i just left wit the bay area forecast. if you're traveling to new orleans, that's the same kind of weather you're going to expect there. pretty unique, yeah? if i'm a betting man, i'm also a meteorologist, i'd say that we brought some san francisco weather to new orleans. and i'd say we're going to take it home. all right. the seven-day forecast, a chance of rain here by thursday, and also friday. see, i can say that. >> fired up. >> i can say it and not jinx it because it's kind of on a weather guess. >> oh, okay. >> let's go to vegas right now and make the bet. thanks, jeff. just ahead, an online banking crash at b of a. find out what happened next. twitter users are reminding users to change their pass words. that's after hackers got access to a quarter million names. e-mail address and other information too. twitter says the attack is the latest in a series on attacks on large u.s. companies. some har. criticism of bank of america tonight after an online meltdown. 40 million people were locked out of online and mobile banking today. in a tweet, the bank said the outage stemmed from a technical issue. now industry expert says the fact that the company did not have a backup system in place is inexcusable. as of this hour, some customers are still locked out from their online accounts. we're back in a moment from new orleans. stay with us. good evening. i'm dave feldman in new orleans. much has been made of all the jay harbaughs. there is jack, jackie, jim, john. there is another harbaugh, jay harbaugh. not the initial j., his name is jay. and he is jim harbaugh's oldest son. he is coaching in the big game for the ravens, his uncle john. he is an intern with baltimore. so jim harbaugh is not just an opposing coach, he is also an opposing brother and dad. >> and i hear he is doing a phenomenal job, which, again, i'm really proud of. and then this week, you know, it's been tough. i haven't been talking to him or calling him or anything. send him a few texts, letting him know how i feel about him. and i don't want to get him where he -- people are thinking i'm talking to him. but i'm really proud that he is doing -- i've heard he has done a great job. and that means the world. >> he is far better than even anticipated. and i knew he would be great at what he does. the way we look at it, we talk about the philosophical difference, maybe that will tip the scale. maybe that will be our edge, big jay. he is really good. and he is a hard-working guy. >> sergio romo has two world series rings with the giants. and he is cheering for more championships in san francisco. romo sent an egraph, basically, an online autograph to 49ers tight end vernon davis. have a listen to what it said. >> v.d., this is sergio romo from the san francisco giants. congrats on making to it the super bowl. love the passion. can't wait for you to bring back another championship to the bay. go get 'em. good luck. >> and we'll have an hour-long special right here on nbc bay area previewing super bowl xlvii at 9:00 p.m. don't miss that. i'm dave feldman in new orleans. the news continues right after this. a famed watering hole in san francisco has a new home. the gold dust lounge closed several months ago after the owners lost their lease at union square. the bar, however, reopened at fisherman's wharf as an exact replica of the old bar. even better, it opened in time to host a super bowl party on sunday. now i'm torn. catering with brenda's at your place, this party, i don't know. it's going to be tough. >> let's just stick with the chicken wings. >> oh, and happy groundhog day. >> enjoy super bowl sunday. we hope to see you with the championship on monday. >> bye-bye. oh! progress-oh! -oh! -oh! oh! oh! ♪ what do you know?
