a giants game, of course. an arrest at a party. he is considered a person of interest in the death of his girlfriend yvette martinez. he is now being held in county jail. one of the two women found dead in a crime spree in hercules is pleading no contest in an explosives confession. they found explosives in his vallejo home when they were investigating his wife's murder. he said he had access to them as part of his job and is not involved in bomb making. he is alsoen not a suspect in h wife's death. >> this was probably a great white. they are not very common in california. >> not common, but in this case deadly to body surfer lucas ransom. the 19-year-old died within moments of being bitten and dragged under water by a shark off the santa barbara coast. an experienced surfer, ransom was about 100 yards offshore when the shark bit into his leg, ripping it off of its pelvis. former senior lifeguard turned sheriff's deputy jeff rupert says he couldn't believe his ears after hearing his former olympic swimmer friend ransom was killed by a shark. >> i couldn't believe it, especially someone i used to work with. he was always in the water, whether it was water polo, lifeguarding, teaching swimming lessons, going to the beach. he loved the water. >> jeff proudly displays a newspaper photo from 2007 with lucas ransom in the middle and fellow lifeguard. the trio were hailed as heroes for saving a three-year-old who almost drowned in a swimming pool. >> everyone did an amazing job that day. they didn't panic at all and it worked very well. >> in high school, lucas ransom was a standout, fondly remembered by friends. >> he was a great athlete and one of the most talented players i got to play with water polo. >> people loved him. he loved everybody. >> jeff rupert admits he hadn't seen lucas lately but prefers to remember him as the happy-go-lucky kid in this staff photo and not the victim of a freak accident. >> he was a great person and he touched a lot of lives while he was here. >> i'm beverly white, nbc bay area news. >> tonight we're learning the last words that ransom said to his surfing buddy when he was dragged down was, help me, dude. his friend did manage to take him to shore where, unfortunately, ransom died. still ahead at 11:00, patients faced with a deadly choice. at what cost would you go without your prescription medication?
