If we go back to 2013, the Xfinity Series. Kyle larson up into the fence. Thats twiactually the engine t had come out of that car. It got caught up in the catch fence. The front end of the car complete lly torn off. So kyle larson up in the air once again in daytona. This time, in the Monster Energy cup series. The result of this, top three. Ricky stenhouse jr. Was involved in the incident. These triovals are not loaded and as they get hit, coming to the start finish line, we see the action as they get hit by other cars, it propels them up into the air, and unlike the back stretch, the front stretch that catch fence is coming out. This is on board with a. J. Allmendinger out of the helmet. You see the 42 off to his right. Goes airborne and thats it. The 47 has passed the accident, and he can just stay wide open. He is clear for that angle. The 42 definitely came up. Once again, what an amazing job by nascar to make sure these cars stay on the ground. They dove straight back down to the ground. And thank goodness. You saw the kyle larson replay from 2013. Heres Austin Dillon from 2015. Same idea. The difference is he climbed multiple cars and you see the damage to the fence, the damage to the car. Now the fence, as violent as that is, and its always awful to see. Remember, the goal of that catch fence is to keep the vehicle inside the race facility. And it did that, and that occasion, huge impact. Huge damage, but its great to see the 42 come back on the ground and stay below the safe barrier. Red flag once again displayed at daytona. Ty dhillillon out in front oe field. A. J. Allmendinger, the top three at daytona with it will be five laps to go when they come back to start finish line. We talk about safety innovation, and its not about soft walls and devices and seats but the body itself. As we spin the car around, it goes up over the roof and that creates the pressure. It lifts the slab up much like an airplane wing. When that thing gets backwards, it creates lift. It opened up and released that pressure and keeps the front of the car down. The roof doesnt have a hole in the roof. Its just like an airplane like you see when an airplane is trying to slow down. The flaps come up, and its like that. With the hood, it lets the air up from underneath the hood. They are designed to make downforce and seal up. What happens is when you take that vehicle thats sealed to the asphalt, and it even breaks the seal a little bit, it instantly turns into an airplane and it wants to fly. It wants to fly like a wing. Nascar had to come up with devices that werent there all the time, but they would deploy in certain situations. Thats what the roof flap and hood flaps do. Another car didnt drive underneath. Had a car driven underneath, there are nothing roof flaps can do at that point. Good thing they came on the racetrack cleanly. Another wild ride for kyle larson at daytona. We have seen you win here at the 400 and at talladega. Without telling your competition whats on your mind, how will you get this race won . I wont be able to do it myself. I have to have somebody help push me a little bit. I wish my old teammate was out here so he could help me a little, but i have to make moves that the car behind me can follow and read what they are doing. The best way that i can and try to make the right moves that will allow him to push me hard because everybody is going to be really aggressive. Im sure well be three wide in these last few laps and well just keep being smart, driving hard and hopefully, well have an opportunity coming off of turn four. I hate that i tore up a lot of cars. I was pretty loose at that point, and i was kind of hanging on, but i was hoping to get clear to the lead, but once the 38 got inside me, i was just trying to leave him room, and kind of the way the air works, i felt like it pushed me out a little bit, and i was too high into ricky, so i caused that one. Up in the air a little bit, and i couldnt really miss him. I was already on the top, and i tboned him, but it happened fast. We had a great car, and we had the lead for a bit, and we were racing hard. Everyone was racing really hard all night, and we got shuffled out. I didnt pick a very good lane. We were working our way back forward, and that happened, and that stinks. I cant thank motor craft enough, and thats the way it goes sometimes. Well go onto kentucky. Thank you, ryan. Lost that track position that got up to the back, and he was working his way back up, but thats the accident he ended up getting in, and now interesting. I mean, nothing would be better for him to end up and breaking the long drought and going to victory lane. What i saw prior to the caution, that 17 car, Ricky Stenhouse jr. , and the speed right there. He has the best car pushing. Can they complete three laps . That will be the question. Pushed him to the side. Im not sure what happened to 11. Not sure what made him go to the left, but just some reason he went to the left. Look at the 11. We see erik jones sliding. Maybe jamie got hit from behind. You saw him to to the right and then the left. He wasnt turning the wheel like that for no reason. Either he got hit or something happened for sure. Erik jones on pit road. They will try to get him back out. Not a lot of damage to that car. Potentially could be competitive. Just so far back now with just a few laps left. It will be hard to make it up. Rick, you mentioned it. This will be overtime. We have documented that most of these leaders came a wrong time ago. 109 or 107 for fuel. There have been a tremendous amount of yellows, so they should have saved enough fuel. Even though we think they have saved enough fuel, they have to go out and do the work under caution. The guy thats pushing you will pick the guy you think can push you the best, and he is there to take that win from you. David is smart enough to say he says hell help. That doesnt mean he is. With kurt busch now changed into his plain clothes, you got lucky, and it has been crazy from the drop of the green. I was hoping to be closer to the front, and i was low, and we just got clipped. Wrong place at the wrong time. I didnt get the daytona sweep, but looked like 43 clipped us. Im good. The cars are safe, and thank nascar for that. We were really hoping for a daytona sweep, but thats the way it goes. Were all kind of in a funnel, and theres nowhere to go to the low side. I cant go further left because ill rip my splitter off in the grass, and maybe we have more runoff area to escape wrecks. Thank you, kurt. They continue to clean up around the 11 of denny hamlin. And hamlin looked to have had some contact from the 24 of chase elliott. Hamlin was on his inside. Elliott looked like he slammed into him. You see denny was trying to drive back, but then the fire from underneath the hood made him think twice. He dropped the window and jumped out of that car. Under this caution period, 48 pitted from the eighth position. His teammate, kasey kahne also hit pit road. We will go overtime, and we want to take a look at the overtime line on the back stretch. Once they get the green flag, if the leader get to the overtime line, before the caution comes out, the race will be official if a caution comes out after the leader has passed that overtime line. If they dont get to the overtime line and a caution comes out, nascar will try to restart the race and they will do that as many times as they have to to get a green flag finish. Jeff, you brought it up in the xfinity race today that ended under overtime. After the leaders came, the caution came out, and everyone has to think of that as a start finish line. We have seen how aggressive they are, and theres a good chance they can end a point near that line, and they have to be aggressive near one and two. There is adam. A brushfire burning near homes. The. The news starts right now. Im terry mcsweeney. We are on a primetime version of bay area news because of tonights nascar race. Breaking news in the south bay where firefighters are getting a handle on a brushfire burning in an open field near some homes. Chuck coppola arrived on the scene a few minutes ago and he is live right now. Chuck. Reporter we are south of East Ridge Mall in the east side of san jose. Behind me you see some firefighters. A few of them hanging around as the end of this grass fire was put out. It started around 6 p. M. We have picked taken just half an hour ago. It whipped up in a herry. There was a light wind and this brush is six feet tall in many places of the its tinder dry. And many firefighters were out here in a hurry east of 101. If you are looking for streets its near quinnby and capital on the east side. Rigaletto is on the other side. You can see also in the distance perhaps a number of homes surrounding this large brush field. We are also very near an Industrial Park thats also alongside quinnby road. Luckily the winds were favorable for the firefighters. They scraped a fire break and were successful in containing that fire within that area. Not allowing the fire to leap the fire break. So they are now mopping up. They are doing what all good campers should be doing this weekend and during this holiday week, pouring water on the fire and stirring the ashes to make sure everything is out and that it doesnt reignite. As we can see, its very dark now. The sun has set, so too the threat this fire to the nearby homes as well as the Industrial Park. I spoke with a dozen people here who were watching this asked if they had seen any activity in the field beforehand, possibly somebody setting off fireworks. Nobody saw anything but they will become vigilant. This is a warning sign for the Holiday Weekend coming up. Now to our other top story tonight. Within just the past two hours we have Learned Police detained a person of interest in a deadly hit and run. The tragic scene unfoldland about midnight on highway 4 in concord, just east of solano way. The violent crash killing two young children. Their another and an infant are both in the hospital. Tom jenson has the latest on this investigation. Reporter the chp says the silver 2004 infinity crossover was speeding down the solano avenue offramp on highway 4 west in concord when it failed to negotiate the curve and veered off into the adjacent onramp where it struck the Dodge Durango with a san pablo woman and her three kids inside. At full speed, catastrophic damage, and unfortunately arc 5yearold boy and a 10yearold boy were both ejected from the durango. And they died on scene. Reporter the crash so violent the infinity catapulted off the road and landing on top of a fire hydrant at least 180 feet away at the foot of a barbecue restaurant. The young victims mother and 3 month old baby brother were rescued from the durango and rushed to nearby hospitals with major head and neck injuries. Their father finding out minutes later about the unimaginable tragedy and now privately dealing with his own grief. Think of my own family or any other family and its horrific. For the persons first inclination to run, makes it even worse. Reporter witnesses clearly described the suspect who they said ran toward the solana drivein cinema just below the on ramp leaving a trail of blood behind, and evidence inside the infinity that led directly to 35yearold Lemuel Sirvonn Wilson jr. Also just in to our newsroom tonight investigators are asking for help locating a hit and run suspect in napa. Take a look at the woman here that investigators are looking for. Tips from the Community Came in. They help to identify this alleged drive as laura hough. The hit and run happened on thursday night. Thats when police say she was driving her white suv in pictures here when she allegedly struck a pedestrian near redwood road and so lonna avenue. The victim from the crash remains in critical condition. The license plate is 5 tzp 867. Anyone with information is asked to call napa police. A driver was killed after a highspeed chase in daily city this morning. Look at the car and the aftermath here. It crashed on the front of a wallgreens store on mission street. It happened about 4 00 in the morning as a Police Officer tried to pull the try over for speeding. The driver did not stop, kept going. Police then found the wrecked car a few blocks later. The driver was already dead inside the car. Roads were closed for about eight hours to clean up all the debris. So far the drivers name hasnt been released. Illegal fireworks could be to blame for a fire that left six people without a home in san jose. We first reported the fire in our morning show. The fire started about 2 00 this morning, the corner of foxdale drive and Foxdale Court in san jose. Firefighters were able to stop the flames from badly damaging a second home but the first house was destroyed. We have got some reports from neighbors about hearing fireworks and things like that but its still really under investigation. Neighbors say they heard fireworks about an hour before the fire started. Nobody was hurt. An update on the brushfire that was burning in the south bay. Cal fire says the ranch fire near Mount Hamilton is now fully contained. The flames broke out on thursday near grant road in san jose. 85 acres burned. No word on how the fire started but its under investigation. No one was injured. No homes or buildings damaged. It is the saturday before the fourth of july. Now the organizers of the highly touted fire festival finds themselves in even more hot water. A border state to california becomes the latest to legalize Recreational Marijuana. A developing story we are following out of little rock arkansas where police are trying to figure out why a gun ballots erupted in a crowded nightclub early this morning. More than two dozen people were shot. No one was killed. Nbc has details. Reporter it happened in little rocks power ultraloung. One moment people were having a good time listening to music. The next, gunshots, screams, and panic. Clubgoers scrambled to escape any way they could. All units, 81 crime one for a multiple shooting that just occurred. In all police say 25 people were shot. Three others were injured trying to get out. Police say there were several shooters in the gun battle. Some sort of dispute broke out between individuals that were inside. An exchange of gunfire took place. Reporter it happened as a memphis rapper was on stage. Police say the performer has open warrants for gun fegs and assault and want to question him. Weve got to use a hammer. Weve got to use a big hammer on the people who would do violence with guns and hurt people. Reporter authorities believe all victims will survive, including justin pearsons friend. I heard there was an altercation in the club between a group of people and shots got fired and everybody took off running. He got shot in the back running.
