ejected, likely to be suspended, a benches' clearing fist fight. >> both teams giving us their side of the story. jean elle joins us with all the drama from the ballpark. >> reporter: giants and national the fans left the ballpark talking about players throwing punches instead of baseballs tonight. a bench-clearing brawl started in the 8th inning after giants' pitcher hunter strickland threw a pitch and it hit nationals player bryce harper in the hip. harper reacted, throwing his helmet and charging the mound. where strickland was ready with fists. the two players got some punches in before a crowd of players from both sides jumped in. it was quite a phytonfight on t field. lots of kids and parents in the memorial day crowd. they say while strickland and harper have a history fighting does not belong in baseball. >> i didn't expect that. it's part of the game. that's what he decided to do. >> when somebody comes at you like that and throws a 90-mile-per-hour fastball where he did, i wasn't happy with it. >> not right. >> they should be able to hold their tempers back and just play baseball. that's what we're here to watch. >> reporter: parents say it's not a good example for the little ones. giants' players struggled to get strickland off the field and into the dugout. officials ejected both strickland and harper from the game and they could also be punished by major league baseball. reporting live in san francisco. jean elle. nbc bay area news. >> this is not just a one off. there is history here. you might remember this. in 2014, in the playoffs, bryce harper homered off hunter strickland twice. strickland wasn't happy as harper stood at home plate. you see it there. just kind of watching his home run. harper saying tonight that that bitterness from strickland still lingers to this day. we posted the raw video of the brawl on the front page of our website. there is a lot to look at. it lasts for several minutes in terms of all the hanging about on the field. you can take a look at it on nbcbayarea.com. police shoot a man in fremont after they say he was waving a pipe and threatening people. the man is now in the hospital. thom jensen is live with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: this was quite a scene according to witnesses. one woman says she saw police officers chase the man through the parking lot. you can see where investigators are right there. this woman was in the white van that you see there. she said that that's where this chase stopped after shoppers flagged down that officer as his patrol car went by and told him about the alleged threats you were talking about. it was just before 4:00 this afternoon. what happened next, she said, was unnerving. she took cellphone video after she says the officer fired three shots hitting the man, who was in his 20s. once in the shoulder and once in the stomach. she says she doesn't know why he fired his gun because even though he had a bar or pipe in his hand he did not seem to be threatening the officer. >> he really didn't mean to shoot him like that, but it's like he just -- all of a sudden he felt the need to stop him. he was stopped. he didn't need to shoot him. >> reporter: the man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. meanwhile fremont police told nbc bay area that the suspect was a threat, he was within just feet of that officer with that bar or pipe in his hand and he refused to drop it. eyewitnesses told us that that suspect was very close, maybe as close as just ten feet away. fremont police told us they will have more details on this as they become available and as this investigation continues. of course, we will have more at 11:00 tonight as well. we're live in fremont, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. a controversial shooting. thanks, thom. police have arrested two people for a home invasion robbery. john covacs and james hall entered a house, demanded money it ransacked it. covaks is an estranged relative of the person who lives in the home. as this memorial day comes to an end it's the long drive home for thousands of people. the roads from southern california and lake tahoe have been full but flowing. here are live cameras in san rafael, emeryville and san jose. the traffic looks smooth. bringing in our meteorologist, rob mann. feels like a morning program. weather and the east, sierra travel impacted by thunderstorms. as the sun sets, we'll lose the intensity of the showers. check out the clouds to the west. we'll see a system on approach that will keep us in this cooler than average pattern. winds picking up during the day tomorrow. could get gusts up to 35 miles per hour on the coast. and there is a chance of showers before temperatures are set to climb country. >> people in attendance were able to meet veterans and tour the ship after the event. at san francisco's pris ideocemetery, today marked the 149th observance of memorial day. in the front row was a couple from santa rosa whose son died in iraq. today he was honored for his service and sacrifice. nbc bay area's mark matthews has the story. >> reporter: a picture of the 21-year-old and at the podium the former ambassador to afghanistan, carl ikenbury. >> he told the crowd that he wanted to tell a personal story of the young man. in doing so he talked about the young man's love for abalone diving with his dad. >> he did his best to schedule his two weeks r & r for april of 2006, the start of the abalone diving season. >> reporter: just weeks before the young santa rosa soldier was scheduled to go home his humvee was blown up by a road-side bomb. >> he was a rough and tumble little boy who grew up to love adventure. >> reporter: his parents found out a month ago that the ambassador wanted to publicly honor their son. >> to have words spoken by people who have served and served in country and then just to have the citizens here to honor, it's meaningful. >> the fact that he is a retired general, army general. made it that much more special. >> reporter: his parents told me how proud they were of their son. as they did, you could begin to see how much his death has cost them. >> as tough as it has been, what we do we do for him. >> reporter: today the country pays its respects to service members who have died. looking out at all of the grave stones, i am green national cemetery. volunteers placed flags on the 113,000 graves. an elderly man fights back, fending off and detaining a woman attacking his wife. it happened at the couple's san jose home. marianne favro is at the main jail in san jose where the suspect was taken. >> reporter: the elderly man told us when he saw his wife bleeding in their back porch he sprang into action, determined to catch the suspect. when the 77-year-old went to work in the garden of her san jose home, a woman believed to be a transient sneaked up from behind and started attacking her with a stick. >> she hit two times my head. and i go, oh my god, she hit my head. she tried to just hit me. and i run from her. >> reporter: the aftermath of the attack is still on christina's blood spattered back door. >> i heard the scream of my wife. when i come out, see what happening, and then i see my wife is bloody. her head bloody. >> reporter: when her husband heard his wife scream, he ran outside to help. he could tell christina was okay so he set his sights on the attacker. >> she tried bite me. >> reporter: he says the woman was especially strong. >> oh, like tiger! >> reporter: yousef channelled his own inner tiger, grabbing and holding her leg as the brawl moved to the front of the house and onto the road. he said he tried to get neighbors to help. >> a lot of people was there. i asked the people, please, i am tired to hold her. somebody help me, but nobody helped me. >> reporter: sheriff's deputies arrested 50-year-old ranu singh for assault with a deadly weapon. attempted burglary, elder abuse and a probation violation. in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. a deadly shooting this morning in vacaville. police say an officer followed a stolen honda out of davis. the chase then ended on the nut tree road overpass. the officer killed the driver in the shootout. no word if any body camera was being used or will be released. ten people looking for a new place to live after a house fire sparked this morning in a rural area. the fire left at least ten people displaced. some live in other homes on the property. a gas leak also caused neighbors to evacuate. it's unclear how the fire started. fortunately no one was hurt. the grand opening weekend didn't go as planned. many people are still concerned about the new water park in dublin. investigators were on sight today for hours after a boy flew off one of the high-speed slides on saturday. the latest from the wave water park. >> reporter: for this family, this memorial day means family fun time at the wave. >> we have been wanting to go here ever since they showed it online that it's going to be open. we wanted to check it out. >> reporter: also at the park today, a safety inspection team including cal osha gathered around the emerald plunge water slide. in video that's now gone viral. it captures the moment a 10-year-old boy accelerated down the three story slide. as he reached the flat section his body washed over the side wall before skidding across the concrete below. >> it was kind of scary as a parent. >> reporter: the park is owned and operated by the city of dublin. city leaders say the slide passed a state inspection last friday. a statement from the manufacturer, white water, reads in part, we are thankful the 10-year-old involved in the accident walked away without serious injury. we are working closely with the team at wave, and both of their high-speed slides have been shut down pending a full investigation from the white water team. park goers we talked to are mindful of the accident but not scared off. they're ready for the slides to reopen. >> i think i might think about it, but i mean, you only live once. why not. >> i will be aware of how to position my body. >> reporter: anna will let her kids give it a try. >> i am sure they already have people check it out, make sure everything is good to go. one of the biggest rock acts on the planet had the plug coast. and that coupled with the ocean temperatures, which are obviously quite chilly this time of year, low 50s offshore. it's the ocean air-conditioning that we like to talk about which keeps our temperatures down. it's great news for air quality from the coast to across all interior locations. good air quality will continue over the next 24 hours. look at this sunset view. taking shape and are moving in again tonight, which could bring a chance of mist and drizzle. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy skies. through the altamont pass. low clouds and a little bit of drizzle for the morning with temperatures in the 40s to low 50s. heading towards the afternoon, below average temperatures continue probably for the next two days. upper 60s to low 70s around downtown san jose. maybe a chance of mid 70s south of downtown. that might be pushing it for the santa clara valley tomorrow. tri-valley temperatures low 70s, mid 70s around conquerecord. in the 50s for most of the coastline and low 60s into san francisco and north bay temperatures in the 70s. we have this cool pattern going. and another system will come in as we head through tomorrow afternoon. mostly cloudy skies to finish off your tuesday. and then wednesday morning very briefly from about 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 we'll see a system come through that might try to bring out a stray shower or two. by noon on wednesday, skies clear. as the system exits. high pressure builds in, leading to the warmup approaching the weekend. the last three days of the holiday weekend, sort of the unofficial start to summer. next weekend, things are about to change. san francisco heading into the 70s. valley temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s, could be almost 20 degrees warmer by the weekend. cool and windy over the next now reaction. zillow talking with nbc bay area about its zestimates. now the center of a lawsuit. service. at "cypess lawn memorial park in colma." ♪ so many moving tributes on this holiday. this is the 19th annual memorial day service at the cypress lawn memorial park in colma. the loved ones of the veterans who gave up their lives gathered to honor them. >> hopefully calls to mind to people who the people were who made this country what it is so that they can have the life-styles that they have because these people were willing to put their lives on the line to do this. >> brand-new flags are both placed at the grave sights and presented did surviving family members. it is the go-to website if you're looking to sell or buy a house. zillow is under fire specifically its zestimates. we told you about the lawsuit last week claiming zestimates are unreliable and illegal. today the business and tech reporter scott budman got zillow's side. >> reporter: the housing market is red-hot here in the bay area. and most home sellers like brian deemers will admit to checking zillow to get an idea of what his house is supposed to be worth. but brian says zillow undervalues his home. >> oh, it thinks the tear-"the rundown" the street is worth the same as a beautiful house here. >> reporter: zillow's estimates are drawing fire. real estates say they offer overvalue homes. >> it's frustrating because people think my house is worth a million dollars and i pull the comps and it's worth $900,000. >> reporter: the class action lawsuit filed against zillow claims its estimates violate consumer protection laws, calling the zestimates illegal appraisals, criticizing the company for posting the estimates without getting consent from homeowners. the company disputes the charge. >> listing agents put opinions on homes. buying agents put opinions on homes. so does zillow. we think more opinions creates more transparency and more information for consumers. >> reporter: brian, meanwhile, says he tried the online estimate but will stick with an agent to help to sell his house. >> i think zillow underestimates the whole neighborhood. >> reporter: they think your house is worth less than what it might be. >> absolutely. >> reporter: zillow announced a $1 million prize to anyone who can come up with an anglgorithmo better measure the value of houses. they say the contest has nothing to do with the lawsuit. a green light for uber and lyft in texas. the state scrapped a law to get those companies back on the streets. you might recall last year uber and lyft stopped operating in austin, texas, because the city voted to fingerprint drivers. today the governor of texas signed a new law that only requires yearly background checks. one of the most respected sports journalists ever has passed away. frank deford. spent 50 years writing and providing commentary on npr died today. he died after being part of npr for 40 years. in 2013 president obama presented him with the national humanities medal. he was the first sports writer to receive the honor. deford was 78 years old. the memorial day holiday turned deadly in the east bay. details of the probably already home for the weekend. >> it has been a deadly holiday in the east bay. two people killed and five others critically injured. >> a large truck crashed through an intersection, flipping to a stop. nbc bay area's thom jensen spoke to a man who was there when it happened. >> reporter: this is the aftermath of accident that alameda pd says happened right after 8:00 this morning. a high speed crash on a normally calm street. >> there are always people who cross in the street. it's hardly ever speeding. >> reporter: tiffany couldn't believe what happened when she came to see a movie down the street with her kids. >> two people died. >> reporter: details are scarce, but alameda pd says this extended cab truck with seven people inside was speeding westbound on park street when it hit this van, damaging the front end and injuring the woman driving it. she is in the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries but the truck rolled numerous times down park street before resting right-side up, a tire hundreds of feet down the road. a woman inside the truck pronounced dead at the scene, a man dead a short time later at a nearby hospital. five more people in the truck in area hospitals, critically injured. shocking news to the man who manages an antique store right next to where the truck finally landed. >> the police agent was right behind us. so cars are aware that they have to, you know, drive 25 miles an hour because the police, they're really strict. >> reporter: like visitors to the shops. phillip lopez says he never sees anyone drive that fast here. >> park street is usually -- a lot of cars, a lot of people. so this is very rare. >> that was thom jensen reporting. an 82-year-old man heard his wife's cries for help and sprang in action, chasing down a suspected burglar who beat his wife. the 77-year-old says a woman attacked her from behind with a stick in the back patio of her san jose home. >> i see somebody hit me, and i go, oh my god. second time she goes two times, one after another one. she doesn't give me the chance to get up. >> when her husband, yousef, heard his wife scream he ran after the woman. holding her down until sheriff's deputies arrived. they arrested the woman for attempted burglary, elder abuse and a probation violation. christina is back home recovering. as we showed you earlier, the giants lost to the nationals this morning making the arrest of a 23-year-old detained in suspicion of committing terrorist activities, bringing the total number to 14. police combed nearly 13,000 hours of closed circuit television footage searching for clues. they have obtained about 630 pieces of evidence as they try to close in on the suspected network behind salman abedi, the 22-year-old manchester attacker. new reports are circulating suggesting mi-5 had been tipped off with warnings about abedi in the past. we are now learning that mi-5 is launching its own internal review to see whether any sorts of warning signs may have been missed. >> it's right that mi-5 looks to see what the facts are. they shouldn't rush to make any sort of conclusions at this stage. >> reporter: i want to briefly draw your hopefully no gators. >> here maybe the weather was too chilly for some as we had temperatures on the coast not exactly beach weather for this unofficial start to summer. temperatures in the 50s for most of the day on the coast. you notice san francisco now with some low clouds starting to fill back in off to the north there of downtown. 55 degrees. check out dublin. this is one of the spots that should see highs in the upper 70s this time of year, or at least mid 60s at this hour. but it's only 56 degrees. so the same temperature roughly in san francisco out around the tri-valley. and the temperature trend around livermore tomorrow doesn't inspire any hint of warming ahead. high temperatures averaging about 77 degrees this time of year. we're expecting numbers close to 70 for tomorrow afternoon. san jose, partly cloudy skies, 59 degrees. looking at a relatively cool day for tomorrow with highs around downtown near 71 degrees. so, on top of that, we'll have increasing clouds and the winds picking up as we head through the afternoon tomorrow. now, notice the wind speeds. towards concord and fairfield, 20 to 28 miles per hour. that's helping to bring in the cool air off the ocean with ocean temperatures in the low 50s, knocking down the inland highs about 5 to 10 degrees below average for this time of year. it's good news for air quality. the winds still ongoing tomorrow. good air quality from the coast around the inner bay. no spare the air day tomorrow. we could have drizzle in the morning along the coast and peninsula where the highway 17 commute from santa cruz into the south bay. tri-valley too. 7:00, in the cloudy skies. temperatures upper 40s, to low 50s to start the day. high temperatures tomorrow for most spots inland 5 to 8 degrees below average. notice as you head to the east bay. concord towards antioch, highs in the mid 70s. low 70s. north to oakland, peninsula temperatures again in the 60s. palo alto 72 degrees. 58 in half moon bay. low 60s in downtown san francisco. 50s around ocean beach. you see the north bay with highs in the mid 70s. point reyes 62 degrees. one of the changes we'll see tomorrow. wind speeds picking up from 1:00 to 10:00 tomorrow night clouds filling in. these are not just low clouds but a weather system that will move in late tomorrow night and wednesday that may try to wring out a few isolated showers early on wednesday morning. so we'll watch this closely for maybe 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. wednesday morning. mostly cloudy skies, a few isolated showers. as early as lunchtime on wednesday the skies clear, and from there the stage will be set for a warmup for the second half of the week. rainfall projections, if that, maybe just heavy drizzle at times. you can see some of the target areas, the coast, peninsula, hills, and around the east bay. could get a little wet roads for tuesday night into early wednesday. as the system clears, we'll see our temperatures staying cool through tuesday. you will notice inland spots having a tough time getting close to 70 degrees. wednesday, as skies clear in the afternoon. temperatures trying to come up with mid 70s in the forecast for wednesday. as the system moves out, the system that will bring a slight chance of showers early wednesday morning, high pressure takes hold as we head into the first weekend of june, we'll see temperatures climbing at least 10 to 15 degrees. most noticeably so for the inland valleys towards the end of the seven-day forecast. after the blustery and windy weather, morning drizzle next two mornings. temperatures climbing into the 70s just in time for next weekend. bigger change for the inland temperatures to the mid to upper 80s. saturday, sunday, into the beginning of next week. so much better for pool-side to a 3-0 lead. nashville battled back, tying the game here in the third period. however, pittsburgh scored the game winner, with just under four minutes remaining. the penguins take game one of the
