tonight not with football but baseball. the oakland a's facing the tigers. a sellout 50,000 strong. we're live in oakland with more on that. kimberly. >> reporter: we just got a count. 48,000 fans here tonight, creating a sea of green and gold inside the oakland coliseum. and many of them life-long fans. >> i watched this whole field be full of water. >> reporter: this napa couple has been a's fans for decades. gerry says she was a season ticket holder before she married her husband, ron. any predictions for the season? >> we're going to win. >> reporter: so this won't be their last home game? >> no. >> we're going all the way. we are. they're going to do it. yes, they are. >> reporter: the couple was here hours ahead of the first pitch to make sure they were first in line to get into the sold-out game. in fact, a lot of people arrived early. the parking lot opened at noon for tailgaters, trying to suck in as much of the postseason sensation as they can. >> it's very exciting. oh, my gosh. our grandchild got us a ticket to come today. a total surprise. >> tremendous. you hear about stuff like this. this is why you come 20 times a your to support your team and hopefully to they live at oakland, kimberly tere. >> that was last year. thanks very much. this is a live picture of the coliseum and you talk about a major league makeover. by this time tomorrow night, these seats will be filled with football fans as the raiders take on the san diego chargers and that means the grounds crew has the herculean job of turning a baseball diamond into a gridiron in about 20 hours. an overhaul that costs about $250,000. the coliseum is the only complex left in the united states which hosts both major league baseball and the nfl. we'll have more on the a's game tonight at 11:00 and more sports later in this newscast. nbc bay area news has just learned that pg&e has agreed to shut off a major pipeline on the peninsula because of concerns that it's not safe. the pipeline is in san carlos and apparently similar to the one that caused that deadly explosion and fire in san bruno. that pipeline runs under britain avenue between 101 and 280, where thousands live. and yesterday a superior court judge ordered pg&e to shut down the line and pg&e just told nbc it will comply and shut down the line on monday. city leaders first brought up the issue after seeing an internal pg&e e-mail that raised concerns about the line's safety, questioning whether the utility could be, quote, sitting on another san bruno situation, unquote. you'll recall that explosion in san bruno in 2010 killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. tonight, a stanford student is facing drunk driving and manslaughter charges after an early-morning head-on collision on highway 101. the chp says it happened in south san francisco about 3:30 this morning when a 2012 infinity, driven by 24-year-old zachary katz was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near sierra point. they were hit by another car. one passenger in the taxi is dead. another suffered major injuries. neither were wearing their seat belts. the taxy driver in serious condition. katz is also hospitalized in serious condition and the chp tells me he is under arrest for felony drunk driving and manslaughter. all southbound lanes for 101 were closed for hours. the house and senate were at work again today but failed to find a way to reopen the federal government. lawmakers in the house, though, did vote on one item, and they voted unanimously. nbc bay area's brian mooar, has the latest. >> reporter: on day five of the government shutdown, a rare moment of bipartisan agreement. house republicans and democrats unanimously voted to pay 800,000 furloughed federal workers, but only after the government shutdown is over. >> well, why wouldn't we do that? >> reporter: senate democrats say they'll support the bill. so will president obama. but they say they will not agree to refighting obama care and want the house gop to pass a clean spending bill. >> democrats are saying they are prepared to pass a republican budget. for two months while negotiations continue. >> reporter: house democrats say they have 200 votes. and enough republican support to end the spending standoff now. >> will you please put your country before your party? >> reporter: but republicans are claiming the impasse on democrats. >> what we are looking at here, again, is an administration, a president, that seems to be unwilling to sit down and talk with us. >> reporter: meanwhile, with congress deadlocked and much of the government on lockdown, tourists who came to see national monuments aren't taking closed for an answer. a few are finding ways to get around the barriers, unlike their members of congress. thanks to a law that shielded the military from the shutdown, the pentagon this week is recalling 300,000 of its 400,000 furloughed workers. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. a call for immigration reform in san jose today. that was the scene at san jose's great oaks park today. part of a national day of action for citizenship. the point, to urge members of congress to approve a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the united states. one community organizer tells us, there is a huge upside to immigration reform. >> when we're allowed immigrants to be able to fully contribute into society, we believe that we're going to see a better economic progress, we're going to see more businesses open up. and we're going to see more trust in the community in general. safer communities. because they're not going to be in fear that families might be separated. >> reporter: today's event, one of nine in california, was sponsored by peko, and that stands for people improving communities through organizing. governor jerry brown summed up today's actions, saying, quote, while washington waffles on immigration, california is forging ahead. with that, he signed eight new laws. they include san francisco assemblyman tom amiano's bill. bound vetoed a similar bill last year, because it did not exempt those convicted of crimes such as child abuse and drug trafficking. those exemptions have since been added. another bill allows lawyers to be licensed and admitted to the california bar, even if they're undocumented residents. coming up next, the latest on the b.a.r.t. negotiation. maybe getting close to a deal. plus, the fugitive, a special operations team tracked down from utah and what they found in his hotel room. and temperatures back into the upper 80s, 90s on the board. 93 degrees. we are expecting another very warm day for tomorrow and a few showers reintroduce themselves into the forecast. we'll explain after this. with less than a week to go before another potential b.a.r.t. strike, we're getting an update on negotiations and while management and the unions are still $90 million apart on an agreement, there is some progress to report. b.a.r.t. and its unions met today. the cooling off period ends thursday and without a deal, b.a.r.t. employees could strike as early as friday. the unions made a move today, lowering their demand from a raise of almost 7% to 5% per year for three years. b.a.r.t. management is standing by its proposal of an annual 2.5% raise over four years. the two sides have also reached an agreement on a pension plan. a fugitive suspect from utah tonight is behind bars here in the bay area. after investigators say they found drugs, cash and an assault rifle in his possession, 33-year-old jack ewing was arrested yesterday in a fairfield hotel room by a special operations team and the u.s. marshal service. saying how they tracked ewing, and arrested 38-year-old william simpson of las vegas and 33-year-old christine sena from rodeo, booking all three on weapons and drug charges. two people are in the hospital with life-threatening injuries tonight after being hit by two different cars just blocks apart in downtown san jose. police went to the scene around the first incident around midnight at a crosswalk. you can see the crash caused major damage to the front passenger side of the windshield. and then about 30 minutes later, another pedestrian was hit by a car at the corner of south 10th and east williams street. no word on what caused either crash but police say both drivers are in custody. oakland police are searching for a gunman who shot three people, killing one near city hall. police say two officers who were nearby responded to the sounds of gunshots on broadway, about 1:30 this morning. investigators say the three victims were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. a woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. another woman and a man are in serious but stable condition. officers say they are hopeful the shooting was caught on camera. >> having worked this area, knowing that the bus lines run through here, i am aware of there hopefully being some video surveillance cameras. that's something that our homicide oh investigators will look into. >> police say so far they don't have any motive for that shooting. a huge crowd joined the fight today against lou gherig's disease. hundreds showed up at 7:00 athis morning for a walk along the river and through the streets of downtown san jose. it raised funds for als, more commonly known as lou gehrig's disease. it attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. one family told us a loved one recently died of als and that's why they were out today. >> it brought our family close together and if we can support other families going through the same thing, that's what i want to keep doing. >> money raised through today's event goes to treatment and research of als and to support people living with the disease. another beautiful weekend to get outdoors and for some, that meant bluegrass under blue skies for day two of the three-day hardly strictly bluegrass bay area. so if you were one of those folks out there getting your groove on in san francisco, 82 degrees, so beautiful day. even 82 down in santa cruz. 85 in san jose and 89 in santa theresa. 93 in gilroy, our warm spot and plenty of sunshine. warm days are numbered, but check this out. bodega bay up to 82 degrees today. your average high, 74, and it's not often bodega bay gets into the 80s. and tomorrow expecting another very warm day. in fact, tomorrow's high expected near 0 degrees so get out there and enjoy that. we do have showers in the forecast. in fact, tracking that as you can see in our satellite and radar image. these showers making their way up towards canada right now. and eventually this plume of moisture will start to move across the bay area and that's what we're tracking as we head toward the middle part of the week. still tomorrow, dry, warm. but by wednesday, this system will really start to impact our weather in the form of showers. here's the timing on all of this. in fact, monday, we'll see a drop in temperatures from about 4 to 8 degrees cooler from where it will be tomorrow. so that will put many places back into the 70s and 80s. that sets the stage for more fog for tuesday, and even cooler days for tuesday, with temperatures about 2 to 5 degrees cooler. so that will eventually put places like san francisco near 60 degrees, and then as we head towards wednesday, those showers eventually start to push on in here. but you'll notice a range with it, very light. we're talking about trace amounts to maybe a tenth of an inch. so really just enough to get the ground wet. not going to be a whole lot. so for tomorrow, temperatures very warm once again. 89 in morgan hill. 92 in gilroy. 87 in san jose. off to the east bay, very similar to what we saw for today. walnut creek, 88 and 84 down in this fremont. 8 867 86 in oakland. plenty of sunshine for the raiders game. and 90 in santa rosa. your seven-day forecast, clouds build back in for monday and tuesday and look at the highs for tuesday, 10 to 15 degrees drop. so again, places like san francisco going to be back close to 60. that sets the stage for a few showers for wednesday. so dust those umbrellas off, you need them as we head towards wednesday. otherwise, enjoy the rest of the weekend. diane, perfect weather for you. tomorrow, 90 degrees. hope you can at least enjoy it. go. thanks, anthony. an unusual sight in the san francisco bay today when hundreds of people started jumping off a horn blower yacht into the water. the leap was actually the start of a swim to raise money for two bay area hospitals. can you see them jumping off there? >> i didn't see them. >> the one-and-a-half mile open-water swim took them from the golden gate bridge -- now you can tell -- to christie field. they were hoping to raise $400,000 for cancer research. >> really makes us special as a charity, all of our events support a local beneficiary. so the money raised by all the swimmers today in the water is staying here in their community to fight cancer right here. >> the money raised today goes to cancer research at children's hospital oakland and ucf children's hospital. and we has a blood shortage of o negative and b negative blood. a regular blood drive scheduled for earlier this week at nasa ames research center could have filled the need but it was cancelled. why? because the employees were furloughed. the stanford blood center rep says they hold blood drives five times a year and are critical for local blood supply. we now know what's in a chicken nugget, at least according to one new report. that favorite food of kids everywhere is going under the microscope and doctors don't like what they're seeing. researchers at the university of mississippi tested they're being flown to no-kill shelters hours before being euthanized so we're getting them out just in the nick of time. >> reporter: and the kennels line the runways where volunteer pilots were set for takeoff. >> they're flying along the east coast to florida, north carolina, virginia, d.c., and new jersey. and they're flying them to places where they have homes waiting or homes will be found very quickly. >> absolutely incredible. you can almost be ashamed of it in a way that there are that many in the ditch, on the side of the road, in the woods. homeless, trying to survive. >> reporter: that's how he found nala. now he just wants what's best for her, even if it means a tearful goodbye. >> terrible. i don't like it. but i know that she is going to a good place. and hopefully nala will end up in a family home. >> reporter: and hopefully the other precious cargo will meet their forever families, too. >> the pilots and paws organization has about 3,400 volunteer pilots. they relocate tonight not with football but baseball. the oakland a's facing the tigers. a sellout 50,000 strong. we're live in oakland with more on that. kimberly. >> reporter: we just got a count. 48,000 fans here tonight, creating a sea of green and gold inside the oakland coliseum. and many of them life-long fans. >> i watched this whole field be full of water. >> reporter: this napa couple has been a's fans for decades. gerry says she was a season ticket holder before she married her husband, ron. any predictions for the season? >> we're going to win. >> reporter: so this won't be their last home game? >> no. >> we're going all the way. we are. they're going to do it. yes, they are. >> reporter: the couple was here hours ahead of the first pitch to make sure they were first in line to get into the sold-out game. in fact, a lot of people arrived early. the parking lot opened at noon for tailgaters, trying to suck in as much of the postseason sensation as they can. >> it's very exciting. oh, live at oakland, kimberly tere. >> that was last year. thanks very much. this is a live picture of the coliseum and you talk about a major league makeover. by this time tomorrow night, these seats will be filled with football fans as the raiders take on the san diego chargers and that means the grounds crew has the herculean job of turning a baseball diamond into a gridiron in about 20 hours. an overhaul that costs about $250,000. the coliseum is the only complex left in the united states which hosts both major league baseball and the nfl. we'll have more on the a's game tonight at 11:00 and more sports later in this newscast. nbc bay area news has just learned that pg&e has agreed to shut off a major pipeline on the peninsula because of concerns that it's not safe. the pipeline is in san carlos and apparently similar to the one that caused that deadly explosion and fire in san bruno. that pipeline runs under britain avenue between 101 and 280, where thousands live. and yesterday a superior court judge ordered pg&e to shut down the line and pg&e just told nbc it will comply and shut down the line on monday. city leaders first brought up the issue after seeing an internal pg&e e-mail that raised concerns about the line's safety, questioning whether the utility could be, quote, sitting on another san bruno situation, unquote. you'll recall that explosion in san bruno in 2010 killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. tonight, a stanford student is facing drunk driving and manslaughter charges after an early-morning head-on collision on highway 101. the chp says it happened in south san francisco about 3:30 this morning when a 2012 infinity, driven by 24-year-old zachary katz was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near sierra point. they were hit by another car. one passenger in the taxi is dead. another suffered major injuries. neither were wearing their seat belts. the taxy driver in serious condition. katz is also hospitalized in serious condition and the chp tells me he is under arrest for felony drunk driving and manslaughter. all southbound lanes for 101 were closed for hours. the house and senate were at work again today but failed to find a way to reopen the federal government. lawmakers in the house, though, did vote on one item, and they voted unanimously. nbc bay area's brian mooar, has the latest. >> reporter: on day five of the government shutdown, a rare moment of bipartisan agreement. house republicans and democrats unanimously voted to pay 800,000 furloughed federal workers, but only after the government shutdown is over. >> well, why wouldn't we do that? >> reporter: senate democrats say they'll support the bill. so will president obama. but they say they will not agree to refighting obama care and want the house gop to pass a clean spending bill. >> democrats are saying they are prepared to pass a republican budget. for two months while negotiations continue. >> reporter: house democrats say they have 200 votes. and enough republican support to end the spending standoff now. >> will you please put your country before your party? >> reporter: but republicans are claiming the impasse on democrats. >> what we are looking at here, again, is an administration, a president, that seems to be unwilling to sit down and talk with us. >> reporter: meanwhile, with congress deadlocked and much of the government on lockdown, tourists who came to see national monuments aren't taking closed for an answer. a few are finding ways to get around the barriers, unlike their members of congress. thanks to a law that shielded the military from the shutdown, the pentagon this week is recalling 300,000 of its 400,000 furloughed workers. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. a call for immigration reform in san jose today. that was the scene at san jose's great oaks park today. part of a national day of action for citizenship. the point, to urge members of congress to approve a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the united states. one community organizer tells us, there is a huge upside to immigration reform. >> when we're allowed immigrants to be able to fully contribute into society, we believe that we're going to see a better economic progress, we're going to see more businesses open up. and we're going to see more trust in the community in general. safer communities. because they're not going to be in fear that families might be separated. >> reporter: today's event, one of nine in california, was sponsored by peko, and that stands for people improving communities through organizing. governor jerry brown summed up today's actions, saying, quote, while washington waffles on immigration, california is forging ahead. with that, he signed eight new laws. they include san francisco assemblyman tom amiano's bill. bound vetoed a similar bill last year, because it did not exempt those convicted of crimes such as child abuse and drug trafficking. those exemptions have since been added. another bill allows lawyers to be licensed and admitted to the california bar, even if they're undocumented residents. coming up next, the latest on the b.a.r.t. negotiation. maybe getting close to a deal. plus, the fugitive, a special operations team tracked down from utah and what they found in his hotel room. and temperatures back into the upper 80s, 90s on the board. 93 degrees. we are expecting another very warm day for tomorrow and a few showers reintroduce themselves into the forecast. we'll explain after this. with less than a week to go before another potential b.a.r.t. strike, we're getting an update on negotiations and while management and the unions are still $90 million apart on an agreement, there is some progress to report. b.a.r.t. and its unions met today. the cooling off period ends thursday and without a deal, b.a.r.t. employees could strike as early as friday. the unions made a move today, lowering their demand from a raise of almost 7% to 5% per year for three years. b.a.r.t. management is standing by its proposal of an annual 2.5% raise over four years. the two sides have also reached an agreement on a pension plan. a fugitive suspect from utah tonight is behind bars here in the bay area. after investigators say they found drugs, cash and an assault rifle in his possession, 33-year-old jack ewing was arrested yesterday in a fairfield hotel room by a special operations team and the u.s. marshal service. saying how they tracked ewing, and arrested 38-year-old william simpson of las vegas and 33-year-old christine sena from rodeo, booking all three on weapons and drug charges. two people are in the hospital with life-threatening injuries tonight after being hit by two different cars just blocks apart in downtown san jose. police went to the scene around the first incident around midnight at a crosswalk. you can see the crash caused major damage to the front passenger side of the windshield. and then about 30 minutes later, another pedestrian was hit by a car at the corner of south 10th and east williams street. no word on what caused either crash but police say both drivers are in custody. oakland police are searching for a gunman who shot three people, killing one near city hall. police say two officers who were nearby responded to the sounds of gunshots on broadway, about 1:30 this morning. investigators say the three victims were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. a woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. another woman and a man are in serious but stable condition. officers say they are hopeful the shooting was caught on camera. >> having worked this area, knowing that the bus lines run through here, i am aware of there hopefully being some video surveillance cameras. that's something that our homicide oh investigators will look into. >> police say so far they don't have any motive for that shooting. a huge crowd joined the fight today against lou gherig's disease. hundreds showed up at 7:00 athis morning for a walk along the river and through the streets of downtown san jose. it raised funds for als, more commonly known as lou gehrig's disease. it attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. one family told us a loved one recently died of als and that's why they were out today. >> it brought our family close together and if we can support other families going through the same thing, that's what i want to keep doing. >> money raised through today's event goes to treatment and research of als and to support people living with the disease. another beautiful weekend to get outdoors and for some, that meant bluegrass under blue skies for day two of the three-day hardly strictly bluegrass bay area. so if you were one of those folks out there getting your groove on in san francisco, 82 degrees, so beautiful day. even 82 down in santa cruz. 85 in san jose and 89 in santa theresa. 93 in gilroy, our warm spot and plenty of sunshine. warm days are numbered, but check this out. bodega bay up to 82 degrees today. your average high, 74, and it's not often bodega bay gets into the 80s. and tomorrow expecting another very warm day. in fact, tomorrow's high expected near 0 degrees so get out there and enjoy that. we do have showers in the forecast. in fact, tracking that as you can see in our satellite and radar image. these showers making their way up towards canada right now. and eventually this plume of moisture will start to move across the bay area and that's what we're tracking as we head toward the middle part of the week. still tomorrow, dry, warm. but by wednesday, this system will really start to impact our weather in the form of showers. here's the timing on all of this. in fact, monday, we'll see a drop in temperatures from about 4 to 8 degrees cooler from where it will be tomorrow. so that will put many places back into the 70s and 80s. that sets the stage for more fog for tuesday, and even cooler days for tuesday, with temperatures about 2 to 5 degrees cooler. so that will eventually put places like san francisco near 60 degrees, and then as we head towards wednesday, those showers eventually start to push on in here. but you'll notice a range with it, very light. we're talking about trace amounts to maybe a tenth of an inch. so really just go. thanks, anthony. an unusual sight in the san francisco bay today when hundreds of people started jumping off a horn blower yacht into the water. the leap was actually the start of a swim to raise money for two bay area hospitals. can you see them jumping off there? >> i didn't see them. >> the one-and-a-half mile open-water swim took them from the golden gate bridge -- now you can tell -- to christie field. they were hoping to raise $400,000 for cancer research. >> really makes us special as a charity, all of our events support a local beneficiary. so the money raised by all the swimmers today in the water is staying here in their community to fight cancer right here. >> the money raised today goes to cancer research at children's hospital oakland and ucf children's hospital. and we going to show you a new smartphone case with a shocking new feat the shutdown of the federal government is impacting something here in the bay area that you might not expect. the stanford blood center has a blood shortage of o negative and b negative blood. a regular blood drive scheduled for earlier this week at nasa ames research center could have filled the need but it was cancelled. why? because the employees were furloughed. the stanford blood center rep says they hold blood drives five times a year and are critical for local blood supply. we now know what's in a chicken nugget, at least according to one new report. that favorite food of kids everywhere is going under the microscope and doctors don't like what they're seeing. researchers at the university of mississippi tested chicken nuggets from two unnamed fast food restaurants. they found the nuggets were only 50% or less breast or thigh meat. the balance was a mix of fat, blood vessels, nerves, cartilage and bone. >> yuk. >> the -- i was waiting for that. the doctors say that's not chick he meat, it's chicken byproduct. they just want the public to be aware. everything that tastes good isn't necessarily good for they're being flown to no-kill shelters hours before being euthanized so we're getting them out just in the nick of time. >> reporter: and the kennels line the runways where volunteer pilots were set for takeoff. >> they're flying along the east coast to florida, north carolina, virginia, d.c., and new jersey. and they're flying them to places where they have homes waiting or homes will be found very quickly. >> absolutely incredible. you can almost be ashamed of it in a way that there are that many in the ditch, on the side of the road, in the woods. homeless, trying to survive. >> reporter: that's how he found nala. now he just wants what's best for her, even if it means a tearful goodbye. >> terrible. i don't like it. but i know that she is going to a good place. and hopefully nala will end up in a family home. >> reporter: and hopefully the other precious cargo will meet their forever families, too. >> the pilots and paws organization has about 3,400 volunteer pilots. they relocate
