I didnt have a plan when i ran outside the door. A man shot at after confronting thieves trying to steal his truck. Plus, what was the crown prince of norway doing in the bay area . The deal he just made with the governor. And Twin Brothers from the peninsula taking center stage on the voice. I need you to see justin and Jeremy Garcia tell us how theyre balancing hollywood and high school. Good evening. This is nbc bay area news tonight. Im raj mathai. A lot of talk about those protesters. Will they be held accountable . The San Francisco d. A. Is standing by. But first lets get you caught up on some headlines that we are watching. The recount is under way in santa clara and san mateo counties. Thousands of votes are now being retallied for that district 16 congressional race. This is to replace the outgoing congresswoman anna eshoo. Take a look now. The machines were churning. Election workers feeding the counting machines. This is at the Santa Clara County registrar of voters. Its also happening at the San Mateo County registrar of voters. Its a weeklong process to see if a recount could change the outcome of that rare tie for second place. Joe simitian and evan low each got the exact same number of votes in the march primary. Right now, if nothing changes, theyll both advance to the november general and will face the top vote getter, who you just saw there, former san jose mayor sam liccardo. Another headline were watching, a new target today from demonstrators demanding an end to the war in gaza. Theyre making their voiced heard at the google cloud offices in sunnyvale. This is the scene tonight. Google employees protesting project nimbus. Thats a google a. I. And cloud tech service being used by israel. The protesters are demanding that google end the contract with israel. They also want their company to stop what they call harassment, intimidation, and censorship of palestinian and Muslim Google employees. We demand that google execs drop project nimbus now, and we also demand that google protect their arab, muslim, and palestinian workers, who are speaking out against project nimbus and who have been facing harassment, suppression, retaliation at work. Similar sitins and walkouts are also happening at google offices in seattle and new york city. Right now, the protesters are livestreaming actually their takeover, and they say they are prepared to be arrested. Heres the story that a lot of people are still talking about, and a lot of people are still frustrated about. Those protesters arrested for shutting down the Golden Gate Bridge yesterday. Those protesters spent the night in jail, but this evening theyre being released. The District Attorney says she needs more time to figure out her next legal move. Our cameras were actually there as those protesters started being released from the main jail in San Francisco. Theyre actually trying to block our cameras on the public sidewalk here. According to the d. A. , brooke jenkins, shes not formally filing any charges, at least not yet. Instead, shes sending this case back to the chp to gather more evidence. The protest was on the golden gate. It was one of three protests that we covered at length yesterday that disrupted traffic in the bay area for hours. The other two protests were on 880 in oakland. Now, the Golden Gate Bridge protesters were arrested on several misdemeanors and one felony. Today, the chp releasing this video just showing how hard and difficult it was for chp officers to remove the protesters on 880. Demonstrators actually chained themselves to those concretefilled barrels, refusing to let go. Then on the golden gate, they linked themselves together using those pipes right there and cars. A spokesperson for the protesters told us they believe the felony charge of conspiracy is unfair. California Highway Patrol is using to keep them overnight. These type of charges have not happened against the 1980s against protesters. Joining us now, San Francisco District Attorney brooke jenkins. District attorney jenkins, nice to have you back on the program. I know you can sense the frustration from people across the bay area, not just in San Francisco, and not against the peaceful protests but the disruption and the public safety. How are you responding to all of this . I want to assure people that im going to do my job, that my office is going to review the evidence thats presented to us from the california Highway Patrol and file charges that we believe are appropriate for the conduct that happened yesterday. Unfortunately, when you arrest 26 people in a crowded bridge area, we have to make sure that we have the evidence that we need to pinpoint who exactly did what and that we are charging the appropriate people and conduct. Im sure you were watching like all of us were. Do you need more time . We saw almost all the evidence seemingly play out on live tv. We want to collect all the video that we taken, both from official cameras that are on the bridge as well as the mass of videos that were placed online. We have to be able to charge each person with their specific acts, and so when youre talking about 26 people, we have to make sure that we have the specific reports from the chp for each person, and we also need the evidence related to the conspiracy charge, which means that these people had planned this, that there was strategy, that they worked together to plan out the commission of these misdemeanor crimes. And, again, that requires investigation on the part of the Highway Patrol. This brings back a lot of bad memories, eerily similar to last november. You will recall you charged the protesters who shut down the bay bridge. They ended up with, i believe, five hours of community service. Is that enough in your opinion . Look, unfortunately ive learned as a prosecutor over the years that the court, the judges, get to make certain decisions. And in that situation, they had the ability to offer this diversionary disposition to these protesters. Of course all of us have been left feeling as though what happened in that courtroom was not sufficient when you talk about basically a diversion that means dont get arrested for the next three months and go do five hours of community service. That doesnt seem like it will amount to any type of deterrent. But, again, thats the way that the law is set up is that the judge gets to make that type of offer and that decision, and thats what we have to live with. We understand that the judges hold a lot of power here. Is there something, then, you can do differently this time, which ends up in an increased punishment . Is that something you want to pursue . I want to make sure that we do our jobs, yes, to make sure that theres accountability and that hopefully what happens in the system of justice functions as a deterrent to anybody thinking of engaging in this type of dangerous behavior going forward. That doesnt mean im going to manipulate charges. We charge according to the facts and the law, and that will always be the case here in the d. A. s office. This time around, the chp did submit or did book these individuals on a felony conspiracy charge, and we will have that evidence in front of us and make a decision as to whether or not this amounted to felony conduct. If it did, we will charge as such. But we certainly will be advocating in court that we have a system of justice that makes sure that people understand that there is real and meaningful accountability for the things that happened. I think, again, we have trouble with the court understanding the dangerousness of conduct in other types of cases as well. We need to make sure that we have the voices of the people who were trapped on that bridge heard, people who, you know, again, missed medical appointments, people who had other types of health situations, you know, perhaps come forward and tell their stories so that we can present that to the court. As we wrap it up, just to be clear, the bay bridge last november was all misdemeanor charges, and this time on golden gate yesterday, theres that potential felony charge, is that correct . And that could lead to a stricter punishment . Thats correct. And thats why they were kept in jail for the last 24 hours is because they were booked on felony charges. And so we will be taking a close look at that to see if we have sufficient evidence to actually charge them with a felony going forward. What comes next . Will we know your decision of how youre moving forward in the next few days, or is this going to take a couple of weeks . My hope is that this evidence can be gathered in the next few days and presented to us. We will, of course, be moving expeditiously on this. We do want people to know whats happening, but we also want to make sure that this is a thorough investigation. It Means Nothing to charge people if we dont have the necessary evidence to sustain those charges going forward. And, again, the court has the ability to reduce a felony wobbler to a misdemeanor if they dont feel theres enough in front of them. So we want to make sure that if we do end up charging a felony, that we have sufficient evidence to back that up and to support that in front of the court. And, again, weve urged people who were trapped on the bridge to come forward and give a victim statement to the chp. Youll probably be getting a lot of phone calls in the next 48 hours. District attorney brooke jenkins, we appreciate your time and you explaining this process. You know well be reaching out to you probably on a daily basis. Have a good evening. Yeah. Thank you. What about the protesters arrested on 880 . It will be up to the Alameda County District Attorney. We reached out to pamela prices office. They tell us they have no information to share at this time. We also checked jail records. They show none of the people the chp say they arrested are currently in custody. Governor newsom weighing in on all of this today. I think theres a better way of expressing it than denying people the ability to get to work. Someone in an emergency that cant get to their destination. I dont think thats helpful, and i dont think thats responsible. I think there are better ways of protesting. So, no, i hope we dont see it again, and i do think people need to be held to account for their actions. The governor making those remarks in an event in larkspur today with norways crown prince. A terrifying encounter caught on camera. A man in hayward was shot at after confronting a wouldbe car thief. This happened last week, but we just got the video. The victim, francis jones, tells us he was sleeping when his surveillance cameras alerted him to someone messing with his truck. Bare foot and asleep, he darted out the door to confront the man. Surveillance video shows jones pulling the man out of the truck and holding him by the neck as he yells for his wife to call the cops. Thats when a second suspect fired a single gunshot. Thankfully jones was not hit. Weve lived here for over 20 years. Weve had two cars stolen from the front of our house, and at some point you just get tired of it and you want to stop them. I did not plan to get shot at. I mean he protected what was ours. I cant fault him for that at all. He was trying to protect his family as well. I dont fault him for that at all. I was like next time, take a bat or something with you. Thankfully no one was injured there. Lets bring in nbcs jodi hernandez, who is on the story for us. You spoke with the man and his wife right there. This could have turned out a whole lot different, jodi. Reporter oh, and they realize that. Very, very scary now. The 54yearold man says that he didnt even think. He said basically instincts kicked in, and he got that alert, immediately put on some shorts and darted outside in his bare feet, half awake, and pulled the man from his truck. You can see that video right there. He then put him in a headlock, grabbed his neck, and his thought was, im going to hold them here. He was screaming at his wife to call the police. He was hoping to hold him there until the police got there so they could arrest the man. And he wasnt expecting that second suspect to come out and fire a shot. Luckily, he had the first suspect in front of him. He was almost like a body shield. Its unclear whether that man was shot or not, but the two of them got away in that getaway car. So many of us have these ring cameras and nest cameras where we can see this happening. Yes, instinct does jump in here. What happened to the car thief and the other suspect who fired the gun . Did they get away, and did any get away with the truck . Reporter they didnt get the truck. They jumped into the getaway car and drove away. The police told me they actually found that car, which happened to be a stolen car, just a few blocks away. They ditched the car and took off. Now, police did tell me that they do have some leads. They took fingerprints from the truck and from the stolen car, we believe gathered some evidence, and they say they are working on some leads and hoping to arrest these two. It could have been much worse. Jodi hernandez reporting on this story for us in hayward. Thank you, jodi. Up next, the Partnership Bringing Governor Newsom and the crown prince of norway. They were together in marin county today. Well explain. Plus these guys are good. High School Singing sensations from the peninsula turning heads and chairs on the voice. Theyre going to join us next. Youre wating nbc bay area ch welcome back to nbc bay area news tonight. We had a crown prince in marin county today. California is teaming up with norway to make a difference in climate change. Take a look. This was in larkspur. They signed a memorandum of understanding, promising to Work Together on common goals for climate solutions. They made the announcement at the larkspur ferry terminal, which has one of the worlds first ferries that runs on hydrogen fuel. We recognize we have agency. Were not bystanders in the world, and that the future is in front of us, but its also inside of us decisions, not conditions, that determine that fate and future. Thats been part of our proud past. I believe that norway will find no better partner in the universe for the journey we have ahead. Before they signed off, the group also made a stop at san quentin prison. The governor calls norway an inspiration for californias efforts to criminal justice reform. That includes transforming san quentin into a place of rehabilitation. Heres something making us smile. And the thing thats funny about this one is that i really loved the outcome, but when we were rehearsing for the show, i actually got a little sick for like one of the weeks when we were trying to rehearse. So we got really scared of, like, performing this one, and it was honestly just, like, like we knew knockouts was going to we would have to perform in, like, a couple days or in a couple weeks. Actually my sister was the one who, you know, saw the online auditions. And, you know, we just decided to give it a shot because, you know, weve always watched the voice ever since we were kids.
