Everything, and thats where ai is now helping. Ill get an email that will tell me that an anomaly has been detected. Ill click on that email. Itll give me an approximate location. The anomaly ai detects is smoke, and once the alert comes in, specialists can move the cameras to zoom in on a possible fire to determine a precise location. The red line is basically the direction that you want to look on the camera. Its detecting smoke in the view of the camera, and that allows us to send resources. Maybe 1 or 2 resources to investigate. Giving firefighters a jump on fires, especially in remote regions where people may not see smoke and report it. Cal fires Research Data specialists are also monitoring weather patterns daily, paying attention to weather patterns, which is instrumental in how a fire a fire can start or grow. This week, lightning was a concern. You can see here where a strike was detected monday near los gatos by assessing weather patterns and how a fire might grow, the data is also helping crews determine the most effective strategies to battle a blaze. Just today, the data was used to help crews battling a small fire near altamont pass, combining boots on the ground and technology in the command center to gain the upper hand. In morgan hill. Marianne favro, nbc, bay area news. Well, with all that said, we are following some breaking news right now. A pair of brush fires in the bay area, the first one in san jose right off 87 near Communications Hill. This is a live look from one of our traffic cams. You can kind of see there. Certainly the smoke on the center of your screen right now. Its not clear if any homes or businesses are being threatened. We know san jose fire arriving on the scene, as are our crews. Again, this is on Communications Hill in san jose, a fire. We also will bring you any updates now as we get them into the newsroom. We have another fire in contra costa county, a 100 acre brush fire. Our sky ranger was overhead. This is between brentwood and antioch, near empire mine and deer valley roads. Cal fire crews are fighting these flames from the air and on the ground. Heres the good news. They have stopped forward progress. So two fires, one near brentwood and the other in san jose right now. And Communications Hill fire chiefs from across the Santa Clara County, across Santa Clara County are warning everyone to avoid illegal fireworks. This 4th of july. The threat of fire is just too high. Heres a live look in san jose. You can see the smoke from that fire that we just told you about. Now. Still eight days to the holiday, but we know the illegal fireworks start going off days before the night of the fourth. Fire leaders are concerned about the risk, particularly during the dry summer months, which we are now. Were in high fire season and we know the heat wave is coming right in time for 4th of july week, which is next week. Jeff and we are expecting the fire danger to unfortunately increase as we head throughout next week. Now, when it comes to fire danger overall, there is something known as the fire triangle. You may have heard of that, but you really need three specific things to be lining up to get that rapid spread of wildfires. First thing is the weather. Next week were talking about some very hot temperatures, low humidity, and possibly some wind topography. We always have that that hilly terrain makes it really hard to battle fires. And of course the fuels weve had three strong years in a row of rainfall season, so theres a lot out there to burn. Even with all of our fire mitigation at our homes, the wild areas just continue to get thicker. When we get those high winds with strong rain season. So lets go ahead and take it into the weather pattern. What im seeing in by next monday, tuesday and wednesday. So next week, High Pressure builds in, moves the storm track way to the north and we get hot 100 moving in. On top of that, it looks like we could get a little bit of wind right now out of the north 15 to 25. This could bring us a red flag fire warning to start off next week. Temperatures. Let me show it to you. Here in livermore. Were in the 80s to 90s right into sunday. The next monday, tuesday, wednesday were in the low 100. So a three day event here for us to start next week. And then it would kind of stay high, but at least drop off a little bit and then up towards saint helena. Look at this also monday, tuesday wednesday were in the low one hundredths. And then we drop down to some mid and also upper 90. So that high heat next week certainly increasing the fire danger. I want to kind of finish it out with this. And this is a look at a fire danger rating scale, the same one that firefighters use. And right now its 45 which is considered a low to moderate. But next week were talking about 100, which is considered to be in that high category. Well have more looks at our Weather Forecast and whats ahead for tomorrow. Ill be back with that in about ten minutes. Okay. Well talk to you then. Thank you jeff. So obviously that means with what jeff just told you, that you dont want to be using fireworks. There are safe, sanctioned fireworks displays that are planned throughout the bay area. That is a much better option. We put together a list of all the local fireworks show, head to our website nbcbayarea. Com. Slash 4th of july. Our other big headlines tonight. A lot of problems continue to happen in oakland. The issue with mayor sheng thao and also the budget, the city was already facing a nearly 200 million budget deficit. Now the city council is being warned they may need to find an additional 63 million if the sale of the Oakland Coliseum site doesnt happen fast enough. The sale of the citys half of the coliseum, it was supposed to be wrapped up by september, or the city would need to make deeper cuts. That means the city council is now set to consider two options. The first is the budget proposed by the mayor several weeks ago, which includes cuts but protects Public Safety and Critical Service jobs. However, it will include contingency cuts if the coliseum sale misses that september deadline. The second option leaves out the coliseum altogether and instead includes deeper cuts into the Oakland Police department and fire station brownouts. Oaklands Firefighters Union says those potential cuts would be catastrophic. The only safe budget is one that keeps all of our firehouses open. Our members are already responding to over 100,000 calls a year, and were at a Tipping Point where were almost unable to meet the volume of work we have with our current resources. And should we start closing firehouses or reduce our resources by any amount . That would be catastrophic for the safety of the citizens of oakland and also for our members. This is a delicate time for everyone in oakland, especially with the ongoing scandal involving mayor sheng thao after the fbi raids of last week. Now, a city spokesperson says these alternate proposal or the alternate proposal was created at the request of the council. Well, a shooting inside a popular east bay Movie Theater happened just after midnight at the century theaters in union city. Police say someone opened fire during a fight. One man was hit, but police say he is expected to survive. Theyve also released no specifics on a suspect, but are asking anyone was in that theater at the time of the shooting to please contact them. Okay. A south Bay Community college says it is getting overrun by potentially fraudulent applications, and now its fighting back by putting more than a third of all of its applications on hold until they review them. Nbc bay areas alyssa goard explains how this is impacting students. Im grateful for my Financial Aid, for sure, Deanza College student kyree cotton says Financial Aid makes his application possible. But now, leaders at the foothill deanza Community College district are keeping a closer eye on those applying the influx of fraudulent students started coming in during the pandemic because everything was kind of online, danzas Financial Aid director says. Community colleges who dont have as strict of enrollment requirements are hit the hardest. Admissions leaders dont know exactly how these fake applications are generated. This student tells us one of her professors had more than 70 students enroll within the first week. Almost all of those students had dropped, except for the 15 that were actually human. As the trend continues, the college is creating filters to flag potential fraud. The Community College district says that this spring it received 26,000 applications for admission, and of those, 10,000 were put on hold. A few real students do find their aid on hold as a result. Maybe i pull back money on 100 students, and if i get two students in there that are real students, im really sorry that i took your money back, but i can fix it. But i still stopped 98 people from getting money. That is, its taxpayer dollars, effectively. Thats crazy. I hope my account isnt on hold right now. Students say this Applications Trend is shocking and worrisome. One more hurdle they dont need. Its taking up space for students who are actually here and who actually want to be here in cupertino. Alyssa goard, nbc bay area news. Well, today, Community Leaders came together to celebrate the reopening of the malta clinic in oakland. The clinic provides no cost medical care to people without insurance. Its been shut down for the last six months for good reason, because they expanded. Clinic leaders say that the expansion allows them to see twice the number of patients. The clinic estimates. Its helped more than 50,000 people over the last 16 years. All right, lets talk the olympics now. Its almost here. The Paris Olympics are now just 30 days away. The excitement is building. Of course, for the athletes and the fans and for our own jessica, whos already making lists of what shes taking with her to france. 30 days mondu. Its almost time for me to start packing. But before i say au revoir to the bay area, i want to take you to one of the most Majestic Places in france where my favorite sport will take place eventing. Now. While most of the competitions are in venues near the heart of paris, 20 miles southeast of the city sits the famed chateau de versailles. And its there that stamina, strength and beauty will be on full display now. Originally built as a simple hunting lodge, the palace of versailles was once the epicenter of french royalty in its modern incarnation. Some 27,000 visitors walked through its famed hall of mirrors every single day, imagining the opulent reign of louis xvi and his extravagant bride, marie antoinette. Le jardin de versailles boasts some 2000 acres with sumptuous fountains and villas, and it is here, in the heart of the gardens, that an Outdoor Arena will showcase two disciplines dressage and jumping. And then along the one mile long grand canal, you will see Cross Country with riders and horses scaling fences and galloping through streams and ponds. It is heart stopping to watch. Think of eventing as an equestrian triathlon that combines precision training, an Obstacle Course and then show jumping. All of it. The same rider, same horse. It is one of the most dangerous olympic sports, and its the only sport where men and women compete against each other, and where riders of all ages can go for gold. The one thing it is not is for the faint of heart. Fantastique. No, ive got to figure out what what youre saying. Jessica, let me let me google that. Say fantastique. Up next, there are more than just teammates. Were going to introduce you to the twins, taking a break from their 9 to 5 jobs in accounting to follow their Olympic Dreams in badminton. Stay with us and as we count down to the olympics, we check in with some local badminton stars who are already headed to paris. Theyve made team usa. This team may have competitors seeing double. Heres nbc bay areas joe rosato jr. In team sports, its important to find a compatible teammate, someone who anticipates your next move, understands your lows and highs. In the world of badminton, itd be hard to find closer teammates. When cory and annie hsu, we are like, considered, i guess pretty close. For the record, annie is the older sister. Im actually two minutes older. Badminton has been their racket since they were kids. We started the sport when we were eight years old, i think picked it up, like, kind of recreationally. At first. It became less recreational as they won tournaments and brought home medals. I dont think that ever really hit us like, oh, were good. Were always like kind of aiming for like the next level higher. Its just kind of like a passion, like something we were both really excited about. Theres a synergy when the sisters line up on the same side of the court. Or maybe youd call it a twin energy because we were together like 24 7, it made our bond, like, even closer. And i think that reflects when we play, like on the court. But when the sisters headed off to college at uc berkeley, they made the tough decision to lay down their rackets during the pandemic. We completely stopped for like around 3 to 4 years, not touched a single racket for years, flew by the sisters got jobs as accountants, but there was no accounting for the draw of the court. They took a leave of absence from their jobs and set their compass for the olympics. When we first, like, picked up a racket again coming back, i was like super happy. We decided that it would be best to just put like 110 of our effort and time onto, like chasing this olympic dream. They ended up qualifying for the Olympic Games and now are headed to paris in the doubles competition. Very hard to see someone that can come back after you quit. 3 or 4 years and not touching your racket at all. Our first dream was to get into the olympics. Their second dream may surprise you because its not necessarily about winning medals. A next one might be like to try to promote the sport and grow the sport in the united states, because its not that well known right now. The key to the sisters Olympic Dreams is babe Badminton Club in milpitas. This has basically been our home for like the last 14 years. As for whether their wonder twin powers give them a leg up at the games, very hard for their opponents to say, hey, which one is not that good today, the sisters are excited about the chance to go to paris and to take part in the opening ceremony, and maybe even come home with matching medals. Joe rosato jr, nbc, bay area news. So fun. Okay, another biggie were counting down to paris, as you know. Now join me for a special olympic show focusing on the new olympic sport of breaking. You know, like breakdancing, art meets athletics is talented bboys and bgirls. Thats what they call them from all around the country and all around the world are heading to paris. Were walking you through the moves you want. Were not going to miss that. Thats even. Look were even trying it ourselves. You can join. Yes, you can join us on nbc bay area. Your favorite streaming platform. Its going to air sunday night at 8 p. M. Jonathan needs some work there. Yeah, well, i mean, you know, with our my aching bones and body, i cant do that stuff. I dont think any of us can. Yeah it looks pretty challenging. And that badminton, its not like your backyard badminton. No. Thats like legit. And theyre like accountants. They have to tell their boss. Oh, can we take a leave of absence . Were going to the olympics. Wow. I think thats a good excuse, though, to take a leave of absence. Right. Going to the olympics . Yes. Take it away, jeff. And our Weather Forecast back here at home. It has been warm today. Weve been tracking some fire activity here. The fire that broke out earlier today out near brentwood. I want to start off with that and show you whats happening with the conditions. We have learned. Of course, the firefighters have stopped forward progress, but we know a lot of you are still probably smelling that smoke. The flames got really close to a subdivision out here. Theres brentwood proper and then the fire starting just off to the west, and this thing just really raced right towards the subdivision here, right around presidio drive. Also Saint Andrews drive. So Anyone Around this, it was all too close for you now theyll still be watching hot spots tonight. We could get gusts up to about 25 right now. 86 humidity of 22. Well see a repeat performance here on that weather as we head through tomorrow. Again, this happening near empire mine road and deer valley road now, we also brought you some breaking news earlier in this show on another fire out in Communications Hill in the south bay, san jose area. Were working to learn more information on that. I can tell you winds tonight would be ten to about 20mph. Again, well have more updates on that one as well as needed. Okay. When it comes to our weather here, as we head through tomorrow, well see High Pressure to the north, but keeping the storm track away. But the good thing for us is that fog at the coastline, thats whats going to save us from some hot 90 to 1 hundredths. A second thing thats going to work in conjunction with that fog is a cool front sweeping across. Now, this one is dry, but its just a reinforcing thing here to just stop that heat where it is at least for now. Well talk about some one hundredths eventually. Back in the 7day forecast here in just a little bit. But lets roll it into tomorrow morning. Fog back at the coast and also near the bay to start. And then we see that clear back for that afternoon sunshine. Morning temperatures coming in like this. I have it down to 55 in the tri valley peninsula, 54 and will stay with those 50s here for the east bay, San Francisco and the north bay. As we roll through tomorrow afternoon, look for 80s inland 70s near the bay and 50s to 60s right here at the coastline, under those mostly sunny skies, then beyond this next monday, tuesday and wednesday, hot one, hundreds coming back with this area, High Pressure could get into some wind out of the north, ten to about 25mph. So we may be talking about red flag fire warnings early next week. As far as it goes here in San Francisco. Looking good for that pride parade on sunday, 1030 in the morning. Well get a little bit of morning fog, afternoon sun and 69. And for the inland valleys, were looking all good all the way through sunday. And then early next week that that heat is with us 92 and 100 and 101. Yeah three day event for us right now. So were were going to be in it early next week right into 4th of july. Thank you jeff. Up next a sweep of arrests for an entire chapter of the hells angels in california. Well tell you what led to the arrest and exactly where. Say what and then they ransacked the place happened around 3 00 in the morning in the richmond. Thieves drove a vehicle through the front door before a group of nearly dozen people robbed the place. You can see the photos in the video shared with us. You can see the car being towed away by police. Store owner says Police Arrived within minutes and confronted an estimated ten people, who then took off in three different cars. No word yet if police were able to make any arrests, but the store owner, who would not speak to us on camera, says the break in did about 50,000 worth of damage to the store and unfortunately he is uninsured because of a prior break in. Its not his fault that he is deemed uninsurable by an insurance company, right . I mean, Insurance Companies look, and they do their analysis and here on geary boulevard and other merchant corridors, clement street, back in january, we had six businesses get broken into overnight. Now marjan flower is a neighbor in the area. Shes running to replace current District Supervisor connie chan. She says crime has been a major concern in the district over the last few years. We were told the supervisor, connie chan, was unavailable for comment, but a spokesperson says shes been pushing the Mayors Office to deploy more officers into the richmond district. New at six. The entire bakersfield chapter of the hells angels biker gang was arrested. It was all part of a kidnaping, robbery and assault investigation. The Kern County Sheriffs Department Says six active members were arrested yesterday, including its president and vice president. Investigators seized 25 guns and ammunition. The Justice Department designates the hells angels, founded after world war two, in Southern California as an outlaw motorcycle gang and criminal enterprise. The people who supplied matthew perry, the actor, with ketamine before his death may soon face charges. Perry, who was known as Chandler Bing on friends, died at his home last year. Medical Examiners Office later said he died from a combination of drowning and the effects of ketamine. Perry reportedly was receiving ketamine infusion therapy to treat his depression and anxiety, but the coroner ruled that the level of ketamine found in his body after his death was unusually high, a source familiar with the investigation tells nbc the case could ultimately result in charges against numerous people. All right. Up next with 30 days remaining until the opening ceremony, how does the goat get ready . I think shes ready all the time. Were going to check in with simone biles.
