9:20 p.m. eastern time. the train derailed in a dimly lit area. rescue crews were scrambling, having to use flashlights in what ended up being a level three mass casualty incident. a call went out for surrounding helicopters to help with the rescue efforts by shining spot lights on the area. we also know six people are in critical condition. there were 243 people on board the train, five of whom were amtrak employees. msnbc's adam reiss is live in philadelphia with us this morning. adam, what is the scene looking like this morning where you are? >> reporter: betty, good morning to you. mayor nutter of philadelphia says they can't be sure everyone is accounted for. they sent in search dogs and firemen with hydraulics jaws of life to rip open the metal of the trains to see if in fact, there are people inside. the train left philadelphia's 30th street station last night, got here about 9:28. that's when it derailed. all seven cars off the tracks, three of them completely. the mayor described it as a complete devastation. passengers describing the inside of the car, luggage thrown about, people thrown about as the car flipped over onto its side. firefighters say many were able to self-evacuate and get away from the scene safely. what happens next we expect to see ntsb on site. they are behind me looking at wreckage trying to analyze what happened. fbi and federal railroad association will be here on site. they will test data recorders to see how fast was train was going, the conductor and see what his state of mind was. they will do toxicology tests as well. >> this was taken by nbc producer janel richards just moments after it all happened. >> here. go, go, go. >> can i just get out? >> help me. darkness and confusion. one witness spoke to our philadelphia affiliate wcau about what it was like. >> we were sitting there and it just -- we saw it go like that. you could feel it off the tracks and then we rolled and rolled and the next thing i knew we were pushing out the emergency exit, and i was outside and there were people screaming and bleeding and we helped them out and they're okay now. >> victims were carried away in droves. outside train cars scattered off the tracks, some upside down, some on their sides, one nearly split in two. the tracks, mangled and bent. here is our affiliate helicopter reporter described it from above. >> this one here appears to be the most heavily damaged, completely off the tracks here. right now you can see some of the other train cars in this area and you just see how this one just completely went off the rail. you see right here this is that front of the train there. that would be the engine car, and what we pointed out a few minutes ago is how far it went off the rails and really so far separated from the rest of the cars that it came to this point here and jumped the rails and just ripped them off the railroad ties and bent the entire rail. philadelphia mayor michael nutter describing just how horrific the scene is. >> full response, fire, police, department of homeland security, septa, amtrak and the state police have talked to governor wolf and his chief of staff. they're very concerned about this incident, giving their full cooperation and support. all agencies actively engaged and involved. i've been down on the tracks, on the scene with my staff. it is an absolute disastrous mess. never seen anything like this in my life, and most personnel will say that as well. going to give you updated information. we want our families -- this was a northbound train from washington, d.c. to new york city. many of these folks do not live in philadelphia. >> amtrak released this statement just hours ago saying, quote, we are deeply saddened by the loss of life from amtrak northeast regional train 188 that derailed north of philadelphia tuesday evening. we ask the news media to be respectful of our customers, employees and their families. this morning amtrak is telling customers there will be service between washington and philadelphia, harrisburg and philly, then new york and boston. there will be no amtrak service between new york and philly. it's probably a good idea to check with amtrak before traveling for the next few days. just moments ago we learned from temple university hospital that a sixth person had died from their injuries. now it is time to take a look at the weather and here is nbc meteorologist bill karins with us this morning. good morning bill. >> good morning. philadelphia had to do the cleanup, recovery weather over the next few days does look good. it was a high in the 90s, heat kink extreme heat wave does make the tracks what were but doesn't look like that's the case. it was only 80. they will do from 61 to 70 this afternoon. troublesome weather overnight continues in texas. houston had about four inches of rain overnight. flash flood warnings there. more rain is heading up from west texas toward dallas-ft. worth area and oklahoma city. another one to three inches if possible and maybe minor flooding. also welcome precipitation to the west. this is very welcome, of course and very nushlunusual this time of year. usually don't get that in mai. this blue area snow not a lot of rain but we will get some. on the satellite and radar not a lot of highlights to be seen. you can see a little spin-off the coast and that will eventually cause precipitation. again, not a huge storm but enough that they get justington. some leftover in washington state today. temperatures will be in the 60s. so no big
