♪ oh, baby, want to get with you and take your picture ♪ good morning. i'm dara brown. we begin with breaking news. meteorologists are calling it the historic image that will be studied for years to come. twin tornadoes side-by-side creating a massive path of destruction. two people are confirmed dead, and at least 16 people critically injured. pilgrim, nebraska's residents are now digging out of the rubble. >> really incredibly strong tornado with another secondary tornado, like i said, wrapping around it. >> there's two of them. one back over here and one coming right at us. >> one county commissioner says more than half the town is gone. absolutely gone. that is where we find nbc's jay gray this morning. jay, can you tell us what the latest is? >> good morning, dara. the sun coming up and really revealing the overwhelming devastation. a snapped phone and power poles like this one scattered about. look behind you. you can see some of the debris here. what's left of an suv there. we step over one of the utility poles. again, they're scattered all over the place. there's not a lot left in the path of the storm, but what is, everything just covered in mud right now. part of what so many here have called an almost surreal attack from mother nature. >> reporter: at first glance it almost seems like science fiction. twin tornados side-by-side in eastern nebraska destroying everything in their path. the devastation is all too real. >> the village of pilger is what we would say the majority is really just destroyed. >> reporter: at least two people are dead. los to two dozen injured. that's when the twister ripped aincorporate a small farming community of less than 400. >> it's just unbelievable. you're just kind of in a state of shock because you can't believe that it can be gone so fast. >> reporter: buildings, homes, anything that was in the way of the tornado has been levelled. much of it tossed for miles. the rest simply gone. >> it's total devastation. our hearts goes out to these folks. we'll do everything in our power locally and on the state level and i'm sure also on the federal level to get them back. >> reporter: though it's hard to know exactly where to start right now in a place where so much, so many lives have been left in ruins. >> just complete devastation here. look, the governor has declared a state of emergency. he plans to visit this battered area sometime later today. that is the latest from pilger, nebraska. dara, back to you. >> jay, thanks for that report. the united states has urgently deployed several military personnel to iraq. they arrived in iraq. president obama told congress monday that number could climb to 275. they will provide extra security for the u.s. embassy in baghdad. the announcement comes after islamic militants seized a key northern iraqi town in their advance towards the capital. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel reports from baghdad. >> reporter: these iraqi soldiers, prisoners of isis in a video not verified by nbc news are being forced to swear allegiance to the al qaeda off-shoot that overran their position. one refuses and is executed. the others agreed, but they, too, were later found dead. they are getting stronger. joined by supporters of saddam hussein and sunni tribal leaders. in mosul they march together on their way to hang an iraqi soldier. this weekend the militants released pictures of dozens of iraqi soldiers being led to their deaths. the iraqi army is now fighting back with air strikes, but the insurgents have their sights on baghdad. if they can't get to it, they may try to send in suicide bombers instead. as evening came, even fewer people were out in the city of seven million bracing for a new round of sectarian war. perhaps the worst this country has ever seen. >> reporter: iraq could be facing a difficult period ahead. the government will likely try to retake the cities that have been taken by isis. militant groups. that means bombing civilian areas, using aircraft to drive the militants from large population centers, and that could get very bloody, when you have the shiite city attacking sunni cities. sunnis responding with attacks of their own here in baghdad. this could be the start of a very long fight. richard engel, nbc news, baghdad. some said it couldn't be done, but the u.s. team beat ghana in a thriller of a game. >> great start here. he scores. incredibly, within seconds. >> clint dempsey scoring just 32 seconds in. the fastest goal in u.s. world cup history, and sixth fastest goal overall. questions next week over the scandal involving thousands of missing emails. the tax agency will need to explain how it lost two years worth of emails from former irs official lois lernor. she's at the center of the allegation of allegations the agency unfairly targeted conservative groups taking tax exemption. the irs says a computer glitch erased the correspondents. they said they acted in good faith in their search for the emails. house republicans demanded the irs release all emails lerner sent to the obama administration. they accused the agency on acting on instruction from washington. into the town of pilger with the two tornadoes exiting the town after they devastated the area. what just an image that will just last forever. something we'll probably never ever see again. two tornadoes that close together. when you look at the physics of it, you don't know that could even happen. it wasn't just nebraska. iowa was hit hard, and even some areas of minnesota, and even wisconsin too. we've had numerous other areas with a lot of damage to clean up. today we have 44 million people at risk and more severe storms. we will see, unfortunately, a couple more tornadoes. we also still have our high fire danger through much of the four corner region with gusty winds and low relative humidity. a little bit of rain this morning diving down through the seattle puget sound. let's look at portland a little later. fwrab that umbrella. cooler today than last week, and seattle with clouds. it will keep any the 60s. we'll talk about the storm over the northwest and where it's
