ride on wall street yesterday, but after being beaten and battered on monday, bargain hunters pushed markets to finish tuesday with impressive gains. nbc's steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: the stock markets were bouncing back the day after the big drop as federal reserve policymakers met in washington and decided against new intervention. the fed will keep interest rates superlow as a stimulus for two more years and not buy more u.s. bonds. >> the fed is out of bullets. anything additional it can do has marginal consequences. >> reporter: hearing a negative economic prediction, the markets dropped. >> thank you for coming out. >> reporter: in iowa tea party republican michele bachmann blamed president obama for the crisis. >> president obama and the politicians have almost doubled the national debt in five years. that's why they're in trouble. >> reporter: democrats slammed the gop solution. much deeper spending cuts. >> you cannot balance the budget of the united states with 9 million to 14 million unemployed people, period. >> reporter: over standard & poor's new york office, a plane flew a banner "thanks for the downgrade. you should all be fired." investors realized the fed move guaranteed two years of easy borrowing could spur business, stocks rocketed up for huge gains. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. elsewhere on the economic front, congress is moving forward with plans to finish its recent debt deal. senate majority leader harry reid's office has announced his pick for a bipartisan congressional supercommittee charged with the task of finding more than $1 trillion in spending cuts by the end of this year. nbc's tracie potts is in washington for us with more on that. tracie, good morning to you. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. he get to pick three and here they are. patty murray of washington state will be the co-chair selected by majority leader harry reid. she was a front-runner for that spot. she's the second democrat on the budget committee and the chair of the senate democrats campaign committee. she's also believed to be one who will strongly make efforts to protect medicare and social security. also on this committee from reid, senator max baucus, he voted against the final plan which wanted to reduce a scaled back medicare and also john kerry has been selected by the democrats by the senate side to participate on this committee. interestingly he did not pick his budget chair, anyone from the gang of six that worked on that deficit reduction package or anyone on the commission who voted yes for the deficit package last year. now, these names are all due on tuesday. we're awaiting the other nine very soon. lynn? >> tracie potts for us in washington. thank you. at a somber ceremony in delaware yesterday. the remains of 30 american service members killed when their helicopter was shot down in afghanistan last weekend arrived back on u.s. soil. president obama traveled to dover air force base to meet the families of the fallen soldiers. the military has opened an investigation into the devastating helicopter crash which led to the single deadliest loss for u.s. forces during the nearly decade-long war in afghanistan. there has been a fourth night of violence in england as riots spread across the country. within london, though, calm has been largely restored with the help of a flood of police officers. the clashes began this weekend over the fatal shooting of a man by police. more than 1100 have been arrested since the riots began. the clashes have resulted in dramatic scenes such as this one. an especially worrisome sight with the country preparing to host the world for the next summer olympic games. here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. rush hour traffic in houston came to a screeching halt following a bizarre collision. officials were left scratching their head after an 18-wheeler's trailer separated from the driver's cab and smashed into an overhead sign. no one was injured in the unusual smash-up, and the cause is still being investigated. it was a movie-like ending for three fishermen stranded off the coast of martha's vineyard. the fishermen had to abandon ship after their boat sprung a leak and quickly sank. with only life jackets and a camera, the men were not only able to survive, but they provided a director's cut of their own rescue. they were picked up by a fishing boat captain who heard their distress call. and, finally, it's that time of year when the hogs take over the black hills of south dakota. the sturgis motorcycle rally is in full swing two days after its official kickoff. it's the 71st year of the event that boasts celebrities, custom-made bikes and hundreds of riders who take part in the week-long 55-mile ride. now for a look at your national and regional weather. here's nbc meteorologist bill karins. he has your weather channel forecast. good morning to you. >> good morning. i can seattle midlife crisis for you on a harley somewhere. >> are you insinuating that i'm near my midlife crisis, bill? your early morning business headlines are straight ahead. plus levi johnston's sister is following in his footsteps in more ways than one. coming up, a former yankee strikes in the box, and a pair of light-hitting heroics you have to see. good morning. welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry. here are some of your top headlines this morning. in yesterday's recall elections in wisconsin, republicans held on to control of the state senate. with six races at stake, the democrats needed take at least three of those races to take power, which they failed to do. the political fight there grew out of republican governor scott walker's successful efforts to adopt legislation stripping most public workers of rights to bargain on labor contracts. in texas a jury has sentenced polygamous leader warren jeffs to life in prison plus 20 years for sexually assaulting two girls he claimed were his spiritual wives. he will not be eligible for parole until he is at least 100. and the tsunami that struck japan in march triggered waves that smashed apart an ice shelf in antarctica some 8,000 miles away. before and after satellite images show icebergs that broke away from the shelf following that quake. and nasa has released video capturing a powerful solar flare that erupted early yesterday. it was the sun's strongest burst in about four years. now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,239 after climbing 429 points yesterday. the s&p jumped 53 points. the nasdaq spiked 124. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei grew 94 points, and in hong kong the hang seng rose 452. as we reported earlier, wall street welcomed what little relief the fed had to offer yesterday, and markets overseas this morning followed suit. asian shares bounced back overnight as investors there drew comfort from the fed's promise of low interest rates through 2013. however, as traders continued to buy up gold, seen as a safer bet, it's clear many are still concerned about how long this relief rally might last. one big reason for that caution? the central bank's sobering language about the u.s. economy, which it expects may stay weak for another two years. likely the reason why the fed also left the door open for more stimulus down the road. investors' initial reaction made for a wild day of trading. treasury prices spiked, briefly dropping the benchmark ten-year yield to its all-time record low. markets seesawed back and forth six times until stocks finally made a steep and steady climb before the closing bell. oil futures also swung higher, thanks in part to a new report showing crude inventory fell the most since june. the day's dramatic swings saw apple briefly surpass exxonmobil as the nation's most valuable company. on the down side, aol's stock lost more than a quarter of its value as investors appeared to lose patience with the company's ongoing transformation. after the bell disney reported quarterly earnings that beat estimates. finally, the notorious hacker known as anonymous that recently attacked the likes of sony, visa and amazon, has set its sights on facebook. in a youtube video anonymous has threatened to destroy the social networking site on november 5th. a bonehead move on the base pads. a walk-off winner for texas. a hitting streak marches on. plus, a big slip-up by the twins at the worst possible moment leads to a painful loss. your early morning sports headlines are straight ahead. thunderstorms are spreading through areas that desperately need the rain in arkansas and also in oklahoma. your forecast is coming up.
