those who remain here are standing in support of a team that has caused skepticism in the past, but not this year. vlasic, a shot. knocked down in front. picked up by crosby. lobbed down the ice. and the pittsburgh penguins have won the stanley cup! they are mobbing matt murray. he's keeled over from the acac. the extras that have been a part of the practices come leaping out on to the ice enjoying all of the secelebrating around the net. there are only six minutes members of this team that have ever won the stanley cup before. it is so new to the rest. out of the playoffs on december the 12th, the hottest team in the nhl from around christmastime to the end, including this. but the chant of the home crowd is for their team. they are proud. >> eddie: the tradition that was first traced by historians to 1904 before the nhl even existed. the ceremonial handshake. the sharks wait patiently, hoping that they would be the ones with smiles this time. not so, but for the first time they reach the finals. normally, it is the capittain w leads the line. that would be sidney crosby. again, the sharks are waiting and crosby moves his way to center. and the first to greet him will be the captain of the sharks, joe pavelski. >> pierre: and we'll just watch. evgeni malkin. another of the marquis names and his ex teammate, paul martin there. how hard they battle. and what a contrast, how quickly it can melt. despite the disappointment, there is this tradition that you honor. >> eddie: it was an uphill battle for the san jose sharks pretty much all series long. the penguins, the better the team for the majority of the series. martin jones gave them an opportunity to get here for a game six, but the penguins just much quicker. and the team that founs found a way for the second straight stanley cup for the pittsburgh penguins. there is phil kessel coming over and that big trade in the off season with the toronto maple leafs not being the guy, being one of the guys and had a tremendous end to the regular season and a tremendous playoff. and for the second time, doc, the pittsburgh penguins change coaches during the season, as they did in '09. they win the stanley cup. mike sullivan takes over this year. >> pierre: both goalies were impressive. we pointed out martin jones because he had to face so much more. the coaches worked their way through the line, and they are last. we will have the presentation of the conn smythe trophy momentarily. named for the long time coach, gm and president of the maple leafs. that's why there's a dominant leaf on it. 44 different players have received it, including five from the losing side. the sharks salute their fans as they depart. sidney crosby with pierre mcguire. >> pierre: thank you very much, doc. in the top of the national hockey league now, what's the view like? >> it's nice. it wasn't easy getting here, you know, especially the way things started out. the first half wasn't easy and i think everyone just stuck together, kept going and found some momentum there in march and just, you know, continued to keep it going. >> pierre: talk about those triales and tribulations, sidney. because it was not easy for this group. in december, you were not even a playoff team. >> yeah. i think we all felt like we had better, as a group and individually, as well. like i said, we just stuck together, we tried to keep fighting and, you know, slowly kind of turn things around in the second half. >> pierre: can you speak about the influence mike sullivan has had on this group. >> yeah. i think he just held everyone accountable. you know, giving different guys different opportunities, different roles. . it's up to guys to do something with it, too. you see some of the young guys coming in, and the role that they played for us. but everybody, everyone has a part in this. and, you know, it feels really good to win your last game of the season. >> pierre: tu talk about matt murray being the genter and your buddy, marc-andre fleury not playing and how hard that was for marc-andre? >> yeah. i'm sure it's not easy. he does a great job being a good teammate and everything you could expect from flower. i think all three goalies, they just stuck together. they knew that, you know, whoever was in there was doing a good job and, you know, kept that way, that means we were winning. they handled it really well. >> pierre: congratulations, sidney. have a great summer. >> thanks. appreciate it. >> pierre: doc. >> mike: the episodes in life that last so many years in memory are often measured in fleeting minutes as they happen. we've been less than ten minutes from the final horn, but these moments, these guys will remember for a lifetime. and especially when they get to hold the stanley cup the one that draws all the attention and is the reason for all this battling and the penguins blocking 33 shots tonight, allowing only two shots in the third period, is the stanley cup. keepers of the
