And tell us, youre going to respond to us in spanish, but tell us what it makes you feel like to play with this group of men who have a history behind this band. [ speaking spanish ] and you have been you were on my show when you were in san jose about 15 years ago. I recognize a couple of you who were also on that show. People come and go, is that right, from this mariachi . What is that like when you lose someone but then you gain someone in return . The people who stay here for a long, long time, 20, 40, 50 years. So, when we need a new member, need a new musician, theres a casting, which we hear the music, the violin or the singer. So, it is changing several times for expecting a new musician. If you want a new violinist, how many people are in line to become that violinist with mariachi vargas . Well, do you want to try . Its a long line. Yes, so many people are waiting for a place over here. What is it that made you say i want to be a part of them . Um [ clearing throat ] [ laughter ] what you say . What you say . [ speaking spanish ] i want to be a part of them. [ speaking spanish ] there are 13 of you guys . Are there fights when youre on the plane, on the bus traveling . What happens on the bus . No, no fighting. Laughing. We are singing, because we live together, were separate. Right, separate but together. Were performing together, were traveling together. Sometimes theres a little bit of stress, but we are laughing all the time. Is it a brotherhood . Sometimes. [ laughter ] in the traveling, does it get tiring when youre traveling . You were in southern california, now youre in northern california. You might be going back to mexico. Does that get tiring for you . [ speaking spanish ] [ speaking spanish ] and youve played all over the world. Whats your favorite place . Is it cache creek . Whats your favorite place . Well, mariachi is known to all the world. We feel great playing in japan, in usa and Czech Republic and spain, europe, south america. Mariachi vargas belongs to all the world. So, even if they dont understand the music in the Czech Republic or in japan, if they dont know the words, they still come to see you across the world . Yeah, yeah. When we were performing in Czech Republic in the theater, the people come from around europe, spain, turkey, germany, france, around the world they come to see mariachi vargas sing with the orchestra over there. So, what is your when you talk about mexican music, or mexican food, theres mexican food all over mexico. When you come to the united states, is it the same kind of food, or do you taste a difference . We like chinese food. Yeah, yeah, thats right. We like chinese food. This afternoon we went to a chinese food restaurant. So, when youre eating a taco at the tacaria in mexico and here, does it taste the same . Yeah, but we want to taste different food. When the crowd, when you see them cheering and clapping and applauding, does that make you sing better, play better . [ speaking spanish ] [ speaking spanish ] what is it that has kept the mariachi together for more than 100 years . I mean, i know that its not the same guys that were there 100 years ago, but what is it that keeps your brand, mariachi vargas, what keeps this going for generations, three, four generations . Wow. I think the tradition and the music, a long, long time mariachi vargas playing every time, so people likes ranchera, people like sones, people like boleros, so many, many things that people like to come to see every time, every year, to the same place, like this casino. Its great for us. And you play the harp . Yes. And when you play the harp, is there one specific song that you like more like cas cavale . Yes, thats right. Its hard when i play solo. People clapping and standing ovation and its very great for me that people like that, the music and mariachi music. Mariachi vargas is going to be playing for us here on comunidad del valle in just a bit. Theyre also going to be coming to san jose on june 28th, so youll want to make sure that you lock that into your calendars with yolanda landreo and what not. People might think [ speaking spanish ] [ speaking spanish ] so, you worked with the same artistic director for a long time. What is it like to transition to a new director with mariachi . So, different style, i think so. Martinez was a great arrangement, what a great person, what a great musician, so he was an attachment for a long time, so we are expecting new arrangements, new music for us, so were expecting the response of the people for us i think will be a great response about the music because it is a great way of music, musician, too.
