"support siouxland soldiers"... also wants to say "thank you" to wendys for donating the chili... and to pizza ranch for providing the chicken noodle soup. 3 3 speaking of veterans... fifty veterans from the vietnam war were honored for their part in an award - winning series of reports by the sioux city journal called "vietnam: service with honor." for the last three months pictures of the veterans and some of their stories have strong encounter center. this gave the veterans a chance to talk about their service to the country and to get a "thank you" for all they did. the veterans were also able to catch up with old friends... and people who visited the exhibit learned more about the sacrifices those vets made. 3 a man from siouxland has died in a colorado avalanche. longtime le mars native ron (bray - bander) brabander lost his life friday while riding his snowbike... it's an off - road motorcycle converted into a vehicle with skis. it's the first snow - bike death in colorado... only the second - ever in the country. siouxland news reporter jaclyn driscoll talked with some of (bray - bander)'s brabander's friends and former co - workers who say he died doing what he loved. 3 a go-getter a lover of the outdoors and a bit of a daredevil ron brabander is remembered by many throughout sioux city. "everybody remembers him as a person with a great smile, happy all the time, always willing to help anybody and everybody no matter what it was." "ron lived for being outside and a great snowfall, so i guess if he had to go, it was a great way for him to go." a former gateway and dakota pc warehouse employee, brabander enjoyed working with electronics. "he was very mechanically inclined and could fix a lot of those things, but electronics as well. so, he was a jack of all trades."brabander took care of his parents until they passed away. he then retired at the end of 2014 to live out his passion for the outdoors in colorado. "every time he could get away from here and go to colorado he did it. he drove a lot of hours for just a quick weekend, but he loved being outdoors with all his different toys. whether it was motorcycle, 4-wheeler, snowmobile, whatever it was, he had a lot of those kind of toys and a lot of friends with similar toys." just one week before his death, 3 brabander emailed his sioux city friends boasting of his newly assembled snowbike and, what he calls, some "spooky situations" he got himself into while riding. despite the tragic circumstance, brabander 3 so far there's no word on when his funeral service will be... but family is planning a celebration of life for ron (bray - bander) brabander on the 4th of july... on top of one of his favorite mountains in colorado. 3 one sioux city middle school is hoping to make the transition from elementary school easier for fifth graders.25 fifth grade students from liberty... loess hills... crescent park... and lincoln elementary were named "student ambassadors"... spending the day at west middle school and learning how their school days would go once they become sixth graders in august. 3 "it's a great opportunity for these kids to be leaders of their class they were chosen to come up here to west middle school out of 350 kids and that's a pretty awesome thing these kids to get and to be able to go back and answer all the questions for their wouldn't get answered when they come up here in the spring with 350 kids is really vital for them to be successful for when they get up here to west middle 3 school. "the learning experience was pretty exciting for two of the students... 3 "its awesomei think its fun.//i get to see everyone, i get to meet new people. and you have different classes so it not just like the same thing and you get to pick classes you want. "the "student ambassadors" return to their classrooms now... to share what they learned with the rest of this year's 5th graders. 3 and *second grade* students at lincoln elementary are sharing their family histories.the students created a project looking at each of their family's history... and set up a museum to display what they learned. to set it up... they interviewed their family members and included an "artifact" important to someone in their family. 3 "we have talked about all of their ancestors have probably migrated into the united states at some point in time. they are pretty amazed that possible they could be related to someone that was one of the first settlers 3 those projects went on display yesterday at lincoln elementary school on the north side. 3 it's not un - common for dogs to be used as therapy animals... but at a veterans home in salt lake city... they do things a *little* differently.meet charlie the red kangaroo. for about a year charlie has served as a therapy animal at the william e - christoffersen veterans home. he's also taken trips to special education classes and hospice care facilities. the red kangaroo is only about a year old... but it won't be long before he's full grown.charlie could eventually be more than five - "support siouxland soldiers"... also wants to say "thank you" to wendys for donating the chili... and to pizza ranch for providing the chicken noodle soup. 3 3 speaking of veterans... fifty veterans from the vietnam war were honored for their part in an award - winning series of reports by the sioux city journal called "vietnam: service with honor." for the last three months pictures of the veterans and some of their stories have been on display at the betty strong encounter center. this gave the veterans a chance to talk about their service to the country and to get a "thank you" for all they did. the veterans were also friends... and people who visited the exhibit learned more about the sacrifices those vets made. 3 one sioux city middle school is hoping to make the transition from elementary school easier for fifth graders.25 fifth grade students from liberty... loess hills... crescent park... and lincoln elementary were named "student ambassadors"... spending the day at west middle school and learning how their school days would go once they become sixth graders in august. 3 "it's a great opportunity for these kids to be leaders of their class they were chosen to come up here to west middle school out of 350 kids and that's a pretty awesome thing these kids to get and to be able to go back and answer all the questions for their classmates that they probably wouldn't get answered when they come up here in the spring with 350 kids is really vital for them to be successful for when they get up here to west middle school.
