(video from blue origin: 0:21-1:38)the historic landing was completed by private spaceflight company blue origin, funded and lead by amazon founder jeff bezos. this is a game changer in making spaceflight more affordable, because rockets only get used once and are discarded. the rocket, named ""new shepard"" launched from west texas on monday at 11:21 a.m. central time. it traveled at 3.72 times the speed of sound, with the crew capsule separating at the edge of space. blue origin created this animation to show the eventual goal of having tourists float weightless for a few minutes to see the planet below. but of course there were no humans aboard this test flight. the capsule then dropped down back to earth, with parachutes breaking the fall. that whole trip for the capsule was just 11 minutes from take off to landing. as for the rocket, as it decended, it re-ignited at about 5-thousand feet to slow down, and began to stablize about 50 feet from the ground, landing at just under 5 miles an hour.this isn't the first attempt - blue origin did have a test flight in april that failed to land. bezos said in an interview with cbs that the tests will continue for the next couple of years. and he doesn't know how much they'll charge for a ride on this rocket, but maybe they'll have a price a year from now.(video from spacex: 1:38-1:58)elon musk and his company space x also are working to build a reusable rocket, but so far it hasn't been able to land successfully on a platform at sea. although it's important to note that space x is trying something much more difficult with it's falcon 9 booster. it flies cargo shipments into space and back, which requires much much more energy and thrust. blue origin's suborbital flight is not as complicated.""now while bezos celebrates the rocket landing, questions are swirling over amazon's password security. amazon has force-reset the passwords to an unknown number of accounts, indicating that passwords may have been compromised. this was discovered by our sister site, zdnet. some readers reported getting emails from amazon about their account passwords being reset. and this is not a fake phishing message -- the notice was also found when they went on amazon dot com. amazon is warning that passowrd could have been exposed to an outside group, but it has no reason to believe that anyone actually has stolen the passwords. so amazon is doing this out of caution. amazon has not answered any questions or made a public comment about it as of this report. cut: you can protect yourself by enabling two-step authentication on your amazon account, it's essentially putting a second password on your account. when logging on from a new computer, you have to also enter in a number code texted to your cellphone to prove it's really you.""that's it for this tech news update, and there's more at cnet.com. from our studios in new york, i'm bridget carey. 3 3 once again highs will be in the mid 40s today, but we may see a slight chance for drizzle after noon that will get the ball rolling for what looks like a messy thanksgiving day.a wintry mix is the best way to describe thursday morning switching to all snow by mid day. expect 1-2" of wintry precipitation. look for temperatures to hang very near freezing through the end of the weekend, with sunday into monday.3 3 we'll take a look at your news and weather to go coming up after the break...you're 3 it's now (time) as we take a look outside (le mars) on the (icon ag & turf) cam. 3 3 here's a look at your weather to go ... 3 3 3 here's a look at your news to go ... 3 3 tensions are high right now 3 tensions are high right now in chicago... after a night of unrest... set off by a police - involved shooting a year ago. protesters fought with police into the early morning... after graphic video of something that happened in 20 - 14 was released. it shows officer jason van dyke shooting 17 - year - old laquan mcdonald sixteen times. the veteran officer... who was charged with murder yesterday morning... is still in jail.president obama is vowing to keep americans safe from terrorism as millions of people hit the roads and the skies for the thanksgiving holiday. after a meeting with france's president tuesday... president obama pledged to intensify the effort to destroy isis. he'll meet with members of his national security team *today* to talk about homeland security.and now plans for russia to join an international coalition to fight the terror group are up in the air. russia is vowing serious consequences after turkey shot down a russian war plane tuesday... russia's president vladimir putin insists the plane was in syrian airspace... but turkey says the aircraft strayed into *its* airspace. 3 and be sure to check out siouxland news dot com all day at work and home for the latest news, weather and sports.
