morning sports.making the state playoffs as an *unranked* team is all about defying the odds and playing better than the so called experts expect. and while that's a coole story, nothat we're down to 12 teams among 6 classes playing in this week's championship games, they've all lost, well, except akron- westfield. behind the huge development of class "a"'s leading number one passer cal eskra, the westerners have become the greatest show on turf lately. eskra became just the 8th quarterback in state history to throw for over 500 yards in a game. and in their seimfinal win over mount ayr he set a new state playoff record. taking a break from receiving his national honor society recognition tonight, both eskra and head coach eric walkingstick say playing without a ranking next to their name suits them just fine.cal eskra, a-w qb: "i like that a lot. i like being the derdog. i like being the tete tha's laying low. and just kind of surprising everybody. not many people choose us to really win most of the games we're winning right now. i think that's really what motivates us very well"eric walkingstick, a-w head coach "we dream big we work hard. it's the way we should win our lives. we should sit there and go out and no matter where we are in life we should sit there and battle and do things right and work hard. and that's what my kids have done. they've worked hard, they didn't listen to people who said they couldn't and that's why they're in the situation they're in right now. theyv'e rked hard." eskra: i iean the e am is just peaking at the right time. offense, defense, specal teams, everybody is just doing their jobs. we're staying diligent with everything we're doing and everything is just falling together here at the pefect time."those were some amazing words to live by from coach. in fact he was at the nhs ceremony to give a speech to those kids. many are on this football team. coach says he takes pride in developing these kids as a family and there's no more obvious example than his record- setting quarterback.coach: "well first is his intelligence. he does a great job of listening and learning and understanding coverages. that's probably the primary. the other thing is the kid doesn't t n with regular blood. he's g g ice water inin his veins. he doesn't get shook. he doesn't get scared or nervous. he executes to perfection."eskra: "i mean great offensive line up front for me to buy me some time. great receivers making plays every game. and i think that just makes my job pretty easy." coach: 's thrown for over 3600 yards, he's ran for over 1500 yards. he's acumulated over 50 touchdowns. he's definitely a scoring machine and he's a dual threat quarterback to say the least. it's been fun working with him. and the great thing is we have him back for another year."you can watch akron- westfield go for the title just like all the football state championship games on our sister station kpth fox 44. this one starts at 1:30 on
