And when it came time to plan his funeral, the nebraska line of duty Death Response Team took care of the entire ceremony. April 16, 2015 started as a normal day for the zalmes. It was just a normal day. Normal day, it was a thursday. But a familys life would be changed forever. It just changed in an instant. Andy zalme, a father of three boys, a husband of 18 years, and a volunteer firefighter, left on a service call for a car fire to never return. Being woken up by the dakota city fire chief in the middle of the night was the last thing his wife expected. He came in and i had just gone to bed. So he came in and he was yelling my name, he was in the kitchen. I thought it was andy. I thought andy just got home from his meeting so i didnt know what there and he said we have 3 to go. We have to go. and i said, why . and he said, andy went down. He collapsed. The call went out. There were some other fireman there that helped, right on scene. They worked on andy and called the helicopter. Paramedics got there very quickly. We got him to the hospital. Unfortunately, we couldnt do anything more. Everybody did the best they could and did everything for andy, but it wasnt enough. After losing his life in the line of duty, andys family and department were left with the challenging task of laying him to rest. It was with the help of the nebraska line of duty Death Response Team that andy was honored for his service. Its amazing. It didnt matter what the family needed, bobbie and the boys, they would be there. Even if it was just for hugs. They were there. I was kind of in a daze, ill be honest with you. But they did so much. I think they did things that i didnt even realize that they did. We had the final say and bobbie had the final say, but they sat in the corner and did not take any credit. But after the final taps were played, after andy found his final place to rest his memory lives on. Both bobbie and chief rasmussen say the nebraska line of duty Death Response Team is still an important part of their lives. And although it was under tragic circumstances, they are glad to have found such wonderful new friends. 3 if you missed part one of this series on that special response team. Or who are serving their country. 3 siouxland News Reporter Jaclyn Driscoll was there. 3 with the veterans bridge as the perfect backdrop, iaff and active duty military who still currently serve their community as firefighers. Collectively, on our membership currently serving we have about 25 percent are veterans. We have about five of them who are still in the military in some capacity and collectively about 300 years worth of service. Fulfilling their service to our country, to now risking their lives for our community. Its just another extention of the closeknit brotherhood only they can understand. Nobody understands the concept of brotherhood quite like firefighters and veterans do. Its an alliance, its a friendship, its relying on one another. Weve all experienced that in some form or another with serving in the military and we get to live it every day too on our job. With the military it was always a brotherhood, when i was deployed or in germany away from your family or friends, so you got really close. Then, in the firestation were away from our families for 24 hours so its really close and its guess. Whether they currently wear the uniform, or wore it decades ago, veterans have given the highest of form service to our nationit was nice to recognize people who have service in the military, especially those who no longer wear the uniform. As well as those returning to a similar calling. By risking their lives everyday as firefighters. As firefighters weve been called to serve and weve served our country. A kind gesture, but a gesture that some are still getting used to. 3 its great right now because when we came home we were not welcomed home. Until a few years ago, nobody said thank you to me until about three years ago. 3 although so many of the veterans were eager to show their appreciation. Temperatures got very close to 60 again today. But with a strong cold front coming in, big changes are expected. We will start with a little bit of rain as the front kicks in. Through the day look for moderate to heavy rain and even a few tstorms, but the biggest story i think is going to be the winds, which at time wednesday afternoon into the evening could gust up to 60mph at times. We will continue to see rain into the early evening, and at that time we will be seeing temperatures cooling off pretty quickly and that could lead to a few snowflakes mixing in with the rains. Little to no accumulation is expected as ground temperatures will still be too warm. For thursday and friday, look for mostly sunny skies but the winds will stay pretty strong, and the temperatures pretty cool.
