headed south on old highway 75. just a athe chase reached the north side of salix... the truck lled and ejected the driver... who died at the scene. his identity has *not* yet been released. the crash forced the sheriff's office to close that road for nearly two hours. larry>> it's a legal decision that's caught a lot of people off guard...and angered many... including the victim's family. a judge has reduced the sentenced for an orange city women who was sent to prison for the death of a child who was i i her caca. rochelle sapp was sentenced to 100- years in n ison... after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment resulting in death in t death of 3- year- old autumn elgersma. she got 50- years for each count... which were to be served *consecutively*... or one- after- the- other. the judge in the case changed sapp's 50- year prison terms to be served *concurrently*... or at the *same time*. we reached out to autumn's mother...who tells us, she's in disbelief. jen elgersma autumn's mother honer)>> "it was a complete punch in the gut and it came totally unexpected. i had no idea that was something thathe judge could even do. so when we found about the cut and the sentence, we were shocked. i don't know how else to describe it." in his order... judge edward jacobson says he reconsidered the sentence by his own oice... noting that t pp had no prior r rord and had been a model prisoner. iowa law allows judges to reconsider a sentence within one year of sentencing. the change means sapp will be eligible for parole in roughly 35 years... instead of the 70 she was previously looking at. larry>> a siouxland mother could spend the next 25 years in prison... following the death of her infant son last year. that sentence for rebekah williamsmsmccarthy comes afterer plea hearing tuesdayayfternoon. the 25- year- old mother of 3 was facing charges of child neglect and child endangerment before pleading guilty to child endangerment resulting in bodily harm. as part of the plea bargain... williams- mccarthy was sentenced to 25 years in prison those charges came after her 2- month- old son leonard died last williams was sentenced last month in t ts case. he also pleaded guilty to child endangerment resulting in bodily harm... and also received a 25- year sentence. williams- mccarthy was facing up to 85 years in prison if convicted at trial. under this 25 year sentence... she could serve less than half of that time depending on good behavior. larry>> an akron, iowa man is facing charges of sexual abuse and possession of child pornography. according to the plymoututcounty sheriff's office... the arrest of 56- yeaea old wilhelm van hofsteder of akron comes after a three- month investigation. the initial complaint was made to akron police on july 9th... alleging possible sexual abuse of a 12- year- old boy. four days later... police say they searched the home in akron and found images of children wearing little or no clothing and committing sexual acts. van hofsteder is charged with 1 count of 3rd degree sexual abuse anan6 counts of possessisi of child pornography. he's being held in the plymouth county jail on 20- thousand dollars bond. larry>> land owners fighting a proposed pipeline through northwest iowa have lost a legal challenge. but they say the battle will continue. in a hearing at cherokee earlier this month... three landowners challenged whether the iowa utilities board has the power to gnt eminent domain to the company that wants to build the dakota access oil pipeline. the pipeline would stretch fromm the bakken oil fields in north dakota... through south dakota... and it would also run from lyon coenty in northwest iowa all the way to southeast iowa. judge carl peterson dismissed the lawsuit... ruling the landowners have to exhaust the administrative remedies required... before they can sue a state agency. the judge *did not* rule whether dakota access is eligible for eminent domain. the state utilities board is holding g blic hearings on thehe pipeline... then will make a decision on whether to grant eminent domain. larry>> a recent supreme court ruling is putting a financial crunch on the sioux city school district. and it looks like local property taxpayers will have to make up the difference. the court's ruling basically means sioux citians who work out of the state have been illegally double - taxed... because they were forced to pay a surtax that schools. that means the district stands to lose about 282 - thousand dollars. the district's chief financial officer says the *hit* isn't as bad as they thought. but they'll have to look at ways to replace that money. "we will have to adjust either our property tax asking or the amount of surtax that we levy to compensate. those are adjustments that we typically make annually anyway." sioux city is one of the hardest- hit out of about 280 iowa districts impacted by the ruling. affected taxpayers can file for a refund on the past three years of sta income taxes. the average refund is expected to be about 200 dollars. larry>> an iowa high school football *legend* returned to his alma mater this afternoon. cushing g tive kelly goodburnn won a state title as the quarterback of eastwood high school in 1978... before winning a super bowl as the punter for the washington redskins in correctionville and the current river valley high to present the school with a gold, autographed football from the n- f- l. goodburn... who kicked an 86 yard punt that's still a state record... says the redskins' 37- 24 victory over buffalo in super bowl 26 6 s the highlight of his carere. "i love sports, but farming is my favorite thing by far. it's what i grew up with. my dad pushes it a lot. it's just what i live by. i love it. it just makes me happy. it's what i love to do." jaclcl driscoll reporting>> the youngest of three chililen on a familylyarm of about 2500 acres, deden is slated to take ings "he's involved in harvest right now, so he goes to schl all day, goes to football practice, then he goes home and he's out on the combine or driving truck." jaclyn driscoll reporting>> but boy who stands over six feet tall, found his soft spot... working with younger students. dayleen liakos teacher>> "devin just has this knack to put the kids at ease. he can tease them without going over the line and keeping them in control still. they love going to him and asking questions. they look up to him. he's a good role model. devin soll student>> "my future's not going to be with kids, but they seem to like me and that's good. i like that, to spend some time with them." jaclyn driscoll reporting>> giving credit, in large part, to his family devin soll student>> "my brother is a big role model in my life. he's always pushing me in sports and academics.s.y father pushes me with farming to be the best i can. and of course my mother, making all those great meals. she pushes me the most when it comes to academics." jaclyn driscoll reporting>> devin is also grateful for the staff at pender public school. devin soll student>> "i'm very thankful. the people around me, the teachers, i'm glad that they'd nominate me. it means a lot to me. it's kind of special. i don't know, it means i'm doing something right in my life." larry>> devin plans on aending college to receive a degree in agriculture. then, returning back home to his family farm. if you'd like to nominate a student, you can do that on our website siouxland news dot com by clicking on the "above and beyond" banner. larry>> a northwest iowa college is trying to attract students to its manufacturing program. northwest iowa community college in sheldononeld its second nual manufacturing d d event tuesday... showing off its production welding, advanced welding technology, engineering design and design technology programs. students taking partot tours of the campus' facilities... presentations from companies who hire program graduates and displays of those companies' products. tuesday's event drew a little more than 100 area students interested in learnini more about that program. larry>> and the next day in sheldon... students at northwest iowa community college tried to set a world record. as part of the college's homecoming celebration called, "days of thunder"... students, faculty, staff, family members and friends gathered to try and break the guinness book of world records for the longest line of selfies. there was an official "phone"... the selfies needed to be taken no more than 60 seconds apart... o selfies. the wod record stands at 531. unfortunatel they came up just a little short... with 445 people taking part in the record - breaking attempt. larry>> when it comes to dieting... most people know they need to avoid fats or carbs... but not much about how much protein they need. coming up after the break in tonight's hehethwatch... we'll hear from a memey medical center dietitian n out what to eat... and how to cook it... to make your body needs. larry>> people try to cut the fat out of their diets... but are they getting enough protein?
