putin calling the republican presidential candidate donald trump bright and talented. >> that's what should be happening. >> martin shkreli, who hiked the price of a drug 5,000%, released on bail. >> pleading not guilty of securities fraud. >> lebron james accidentally slammed into jason day's wife. >> "star wars: the force awakens" set to break box office records. >> i laughed, i cried, i screamed at the screen. >> all that. >> he drops it in the bucket. >> touchdown st. louis. >> in what could be the rams' final home game in st. louis, it's a victory. >> and all of that matters. >> president obama will join bear grylls during a trip to >> this seems to be bear's main claim to fame, that he drinks his own urine. you know. >> he bought the only wu-tang clan album and he's not even going to break it. >> the drug company ceo has been arrested. >> because the wu-tang clan ain't nothing to [ bleep ] with. >> announcer: this morning's "eye opener" is presented by toyota. let's go places. welcome to "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is off. kristine johnson of our new york station wcbs is with us. federal agents investigating the san bernardino attacks now believe a former neighbor of the killers was also a would-be terrorist. enrique marquez was a long time friend of syed rizwan farook. he bought the rifles used in the massacre. marquez is in a california jail this morning, facing a >> officials say marquez plotted with farook to attack a freeway and a community college. carter evans is outside the inland regional center where farook and his wife killed 14 people. carter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president obama will meet with the families of the victims of the san bernardino massacre tonight. now, marquez is not accused of participating in that attack. but prosecutors say he did hatch plans for other mass shootings with his long time friend and neighbor. after ten days of questioning by the fbi, enrique marquez arrived at a federal courthouse, appearing to face charges that he plotted terror attacks with syed rizwan farook and unlawfully purchased the rifles farook and his wife used in the san bernardino massacre. federal agents say marquez admitted to planning an attack with farook at riverside community college in 2011. according to the criminal complaint, the plot targeted the because they wanted to maximize casualties. they also planned a rush hour attack on busy state route 91 in riverside. farook would throw pipe bombs, then move among the parked cars, shooting his rifle. marquez would watch for approaching emergency responders, making it his priority to shoot law enforcement officers. investigators say farook introduced marquez to islam and exposed him to radical ideology around 2007. marquez started watching videos produced by the terrorist organization al shabaab and reading al qaeda's "inspire" magazine. marquez says he began distancing himself from farook after 2012 but his recent social media post expressed troubling signs. less than one month before the shooting he wrote on facebook, "no one really knows me. i lead multiple lives and i investigators are studying a 911 call marquez made hours after the deadly rampage in san bernardino, telling the dispatcher, "my neighbor, he did the san bernardino shooting, the [ expletive ] reduced my gun in the shooting." the fbi says marquez stopped plotting with farook after another terror attack was foiled here in southern california in 2012. now, marquez is also accused of participating in a sham marriage with a member of farook's extended family so she could obtain citizenship. >> thanks, carter. new developments in the investigation of the paris terror attacks. isis terrorists used encrypted appearances. this is the determination of investigators. the encryption allowed the killers to keep their communications and plots secret. i spoke with apple's ceo tim cook about encryption. to the attacks but cook has since told us that apple has not changed its position. in the government they say it's like you have a search warrant but you can't unlock the trunk. >> here's the situation. on your smartphone today, on your iphone, there is likely health information. there's financial information. there are intimate conversations with your family or your co-workers. there's probably business secrets. and you should have the ability to protect it. and the only way we know how to do that is to encrypt it. why is that? "the los angeles times" reports that disney land is disney world had to shut down last year during christmas. >> anna, thanks. the democratic party is blocking bernie sanders's campaign from using voter files, the database to read confidential voter information from hillary clinton's campaign. nancy cordes is in washington with a look at the implications. nancy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i spoke to the sanders campaign a sort time ago. they confirmed their data director has been fired and they're looking into the possibility that others on the campaign accessed the data as well. now, this involves the democratic database that contains valuable demographic information about voters in all 50 states. but on wednesday, a software glitch at the company that manages the database exposed private campaign data to all users on the system. and during that time, about a half an hour, the sanders campaign confirms their data director discovered the flaw and was able to access clinton's voter files. in a statement this morning, the sanders campaign says, "after discussion with the dnc it staffers accessed modelling data from another campaign. that behavior is unacceptable and that staffer was immediately fired." the dnc says it has suspended the sanders campaign's access to the database. gayle? how does that make you feel? >> i feel optimistic, because this give us me a chance and us really are. >> american muslims come from 77 different countries, speak over a hundred different languages and dialects. the media. and largely the narrative is something of isis or someone else. that's not our religion. that's not our narrative. i think it's time for us to take that back. >> i also think it's important not to ignore the fact that all this painful conversation is not necessarily positive, even though it is an opportunity, oftentimes there are manifestations of violence in this rhetoric. >> how is it painful? >> it's a my faith, representative of part of who i am. to see that it's been so >> i put a callout to muslim parents across the country not to watch the republican debate, because subjecting our children to hear the hateful stereotyping is actually something that is psychologically impacting. >> don't you want the kids to know the challenges they face? >> i don't want my children to be subjected to racism andville i ification of my faith. >> how many of you are physically afraid? >> there's been an increase of hate crimes that have been reported as well as in the united kingdom there's been a 300% increase in hate crimes. >> do you understand why people are afraid? >> i absolutely understand to a certain degree why people are afraid. we can't hide behind the fact that americans right now, non-muslim-americans, do feel afraid. not because of the fact that because somebody looks different. we're not chanting death to america, okay? we don't have bombs in our hands, okay? we're just being ourselves. and this is a narrative that's missing right now. >> i'm proud to be a muslim. i'm proud to be an american. and no one's going to take that away from me. >> so i've got to ask you guys, how did you feel when you first learned that the murderer in san bernardino held your faith? >> every time there's some kind of an attack or crime in this country, i'm literally praying, and i'm sure everyone else here is literally praying it's not a muslim. and when it is, i know exactly what's going to happen. >> the people that committed those heinous crimes, they were not members of my faith. i want that to be very clear. >> therecy cycy cyis a problem. too many american muslims have committed violence. and their interpretation is such that this is in the name of so i don't think we can, you there's been too many of these incidents. >> are you muslim first or american first? >> i am an american muslim. i can be both at the same time. i don't choose one over the other. i am both simultaneously. >> there are so many other issues besides our religion. this is not a muslim-only issue. i'm an american. we are americans here. and we have so many facets to our identity. we cannot be characterized in this neat little box. >> repeating that this is un-american, that it's un-american to be hateful toward a group of people, is historically inaccurate, as difficult as that is for me to say. we have targeted, we have discriminated against. we've had internment camps of groups before. history. future. >> frank, this is an important debate, a very important conversation that has to be taking place in america in this time. what was in a sense the essence of what you saw and heard here? >> very deep frustration that nobody is listening to them, that they are the focus of debates, that they are the focus of all sorts of conversations. many of them negative. and that they don't have a voice, that they're being attacked by the leading presidential candidates and no one is hearing their response. they were so grateful to be gathered in that room to have the chance to speak out. by the way, charlie, there's going to be a much longer clip of this on cbsn. you can go to the web and see ten minutes of this, because we left out so much. the anger towards donald trump, the fear that they have walking in the streets every day. these are voices that aren't heard. >> do they speak to the responsibility of muslims to get engaged in this conversation? >> they do, but they also speak -- and i kept trying to ask them that, and they spoke to the responsibility of the media and of society not to label them and not to discriminate against the name of a religion that they would argue isn't practicing, that they're committing crimes that these people end up getting blamed for. they talk about the discrimination. and it is very dramatic. for me it was very emotional. i was trying to be diplomatic. but i'm going to admit something. i did not push as much as i normally do in these sessions. >> why?
