((mauricio marin)) there are currently about 600 members of the nevada national guard serving overseas teachers can tell when a student is having trouble at home. but they can't always fix it. luckily, there is a program that picks up on the need, and can fix it... in the home. dave courvoisier shows us how a boys town nevada program is a lifesaver for troubled families. (( )) just write up a referral and send it over to us. teachers aren't prepared to be social workers. they can't go into the homes and help the kids. but we can. we make sure the kids are prepared to come to school and learn and when they're prepared not only are they learning and other siblings are learning but they're not being disruptive in class so all the kids learn. there is no cost to the family when boys town steps in to help , but sometimes, there is reluctance. i think the biggest challenge is like what i just explained is that sometimes the parents are just afraid you know of having someone come into their home and you know r because they think we might call child protective services or you might call immigration on them and have them removed and things like that. but adrian's mom welcomed the chance to learn better parenting, and in doing so give her son the tools to cope. so mom here wanted to help her son and so when we came we just provided skills, resources, and you know support to make her be independent and to make her help him. tomorrow, we'll see how the boys town family counselor works with mother and son to turn things around in the home. ((christianne klein)) on black friday many people will skip the stores and do their shopping online. but it turns out the price you see on your computer may be different from what other people see. brian new explains why: at the exact same time someone else does. you both pick out a gallon of milk - same brand but -- when it's rung up -- the price is different. this would never happen at a grocery store but when shopping online ... ( liz owens / online shopper) "i had no idea .... .. it can happen, i never even thought about it." as a busy mother liz owens does a lot of her shopping on the internet. she was skeptical when we told her the prices she sees .. ( liz owens / online shopper) "on sale for $31." ... are not always what everyone else sees. ( liz owens / online shopper) would always be the same." and so we gave her a list of items. and at the exact same time-- she looked them up on her computer from her home in southlake we had six other people looking them up same items, same website, same time. and most of the time -- everyone's screen showed the same price but not every time. when owens looked up a night's stay at the caribe royale hotel in orlando on travelocity -- her price? ( liz owens / online shopper) "it is $132." but look at this -- we did the phone and the hotel was listed at $119. out of our group -- two saw $132 -- four - $119. in fact - we found several cases of this on travelocity. the travel website says it sometime does offer lower prices for people who use smartphone. we found something similar when we searched rosetta stone's online language software. shopping on a desktop -- the price was $249 on a mobile device -- $189 -- a 60-dollar difference. think that is shocking. we did the search at the exact same time and i got a much higher price." sometimes it was where you logged on from that made a difference when owens priced this ge 7-foot christmas tree on home depot-dot-com with free home delivery anywhere in the u-s--her price was $399 yet our producers - in boston and minneapolis - saw a price of $438. home depot says sometimes it does offer different online customers different prices -- based on where they log-on -- which it computer's ip address. (christo wilson / computer and information scientist) "you as a consumer are just looking at a website you really have no idea why it's showing you what's its showing you." christo wilson and his team of researches at northeastern university tested 16 online retailers and travel sites and found --- on nine of those sites -- customers saw different results and or prices. wilson says when you log onto a website --- companies can see your search history your clicks the type of computer you use even the location where you're logged on from all which can be used to r (christo wilson / computer and information scientist) "this is a real challenge for us and for consumers because companies are always experimenting with different strategies and algorithms. (brian news/cbs news/dallas) so what can you do to figure out if the price you see is the lowest price? there's no perfect solution but here's a start -- when looking for the best deal -- look it up on your desktop and using your mobile phone. if you think shopping in "private" or "incognito" mode is going to hide your information from these companies it doesn't. (brian news/cbs news/dallas) what will is using a virtual private network or v-p-n. you can download some for free 20-dollars a year. ( liz owens / online shopper) "no one just wants to throw away money." after seeing how prices may be different -- owens says she the way she shops online from now on will never be the same. brian new, for cbs news, dallas ((christianne klein)) and we have our 8 on your side gift guide on las vegas now dot com. we cover everything from stocking stuffers... to hard to find.. and the hottest toys./// ((mauricio marin)) it's become a holiday tradition in the valley... who is flipping the switch on and how many years they will be celebrating... next on the valley's news leader.... announcer: you're watching 8 news now at a holiday tradition here in the valley will be celebrating it's 25-th year when it opens tomorrow.. the magical forest. it opens at opportunity village near oakey and torrey pines. the doo-wop group human nature will be there.. and las vegas mayor carolyn the lights. the proceeds from the magical forest go to benefit opportunity village.. which helps people with intellectual disabilities./// ((weather toss)) tedd florendo ((( cooler today for turkey down the colorado river valley. wind advisories there will be allowed to expire on time. sunny skies have innundated the region as winds in the valley are not as high as last night. our temps are seasonal and there's no chance for rain through saturday. changes though by sunday. ...... ............................. ................... temps around the valley in the mid to high 60's for the east part of town where we're lower in elevation. neighborhoods to the west and far north conisiderably cooler in the low 60's as chilly weather still continues up in mount charleston. ................................ ... ..................... regional temps also stayed mild today from mesquite down the colorado river valley to laughlin where we continue to some locales like mesquite and death valley in the 70's today and warmer. cooler with chilly temps expected by morning in the southern great basin. ................................ ... .......................... satellite and radar shows weak high pressure for a few days as a dry southwesterly flow will continue through saturday. notice the big comma shaped pattern up in pacific ocean? that will bring the clouds, cooler weather and showers we're tracking for late we as early as saturday along with wind. ................................ ... .............................. here's the forecast for tonight. dropping to the 40's under clear to mostly clear skies and winds starting to relax down to less than 10 mph. temps should be near average for our overnight hours before warming up tomorrow. sunny skies for your black friday again and we warm up to the mid 60's and seasonal again. ................................ ... ............................. extended forecast calls for clouds and wind by saturday. sunday overcast with passing showers and breezes. week. showers chances end by monday but skies won't clear entirely until tuesday. still looking at 50's though through much of the week in a man's pocket.
