((karen castro)) >> police say an ex-couple was fighting over their child when a third person got involved. that's when the confrontation ended in gunfire, leaving neighbors shaken up. ((yanel mercado saw ex-couple fighting: i just heard the loud screaming from the front of our house.)) ((karen castro)) yanel mercado lives across from the woman who police say was fighting over custody with the night. mercado says the argument spilled over to the parking lot. ((yanel mercado saw couple fighting: she was really mad, really upset, really loud and she was asking for her keys back.)) ((karen castro)) mercado recalls hearing the woman go back into her apartment while talking on the phone about the fight she was having with her ex boyfriend. she says she saw the woman go outside once again where they continued to argue... when suddenly another man drove up and got involved. ((yanel mercado saw couple fighting: then i heard the gunshot and i was like, i ((karen castro)) other neighbors also heard a single gunshot. ((cheyenne osburn heard gunshot: even my boyfriend this morning said 'we heard a gunshot last night and somebody lost their life.')) ((karen castro)) metro police say the driver pulled out a small assault rifle from his car before fatally shooting the father... the suspect was last seen taking off in a dark-colored sports car, possibly a dodge challenger. investigators say the ex-couple's child was inside a car at the time of the shooting but was not injured. ((byron bullie saw deadly shooting investigation: it's very shocking because it's like, i got kids too so you know what i me but now, now i know why.)) ((karen castro)) police are not saying if the shooter knows the man and woman... or if he may live at the same apartment complex. as for the ex-couple, neighbors say they have seen them fighting in the past. ((yanel mercado saw couple fighting: i've seen her before arguing with the, with the guy but it wasn't as bad.)) ((karen castro)) >> police say the child present during the shooting is with relatives. last word from investigators, no news now. /// ((dave courvoisier)) thanks, karen. sadly that wasn't the only homicide keeping metro busy last night. they were also called out on report of a shooting at an apartment complex near the intersection of south rainbow boulevard and robindale road. that's where police say a man exited his apartment... telling them he'd shot his son. inside, they found a man in his 20's shot dead. the father was taken into custody and is reportedly cooperating with the investigation. police say no motive is known at this time./// ((christianne klein)) fading away are d strip. >> last night caesars announced it's launching a paid valet and self-parking initiative ala m-g-m. it'll go into effect in phases, beginning late next month... eventually kicking in at eight of its nine las vegas properties. the rio hotel and casino will be the only caesars property you can still park for free. caesars says complimentary valet will still be available for all total rewards loyalty members rated platinum and above./// wynn las vegas and encore -- will also begin imposing fees for valet parking starting mid-december. officials there say self-parking will remain free for now. for a look at prices at the various caesars and wynn properties... head to las vegas now dot com and click on "links we mentioned."/// ((christianne klein)) let's get a quick look at the forecast. ((dave courvoisier)) >> for that, we send it over to tedd florendo... who's live on fremont street. tedd florendo ((( chilly morning temps valley neighborhoods as the freeze warning was lifted this morning. temps outside currently in the 50's and below average in the daytime. overnight lows expected to get cold again but winds stay light thankfully. ................................ ... ............... he'res your hour by hour. chilly conditions through the evening under clear skies. we go from the 50's to the 40's and expect very little wind and little cloud cover. cold by morning again but not enough for a freeze warning. we'll have more on your forecast for this weekend and next week coming up lawmakers are turning to other states that have dealt with this. colorado has been down this road... and most recently... oregon had to work through it. a few of our lawmakers just returned from portland... to find out what they did to keep people out of the black market. ((patrick walker)) come midnight on january first... it will be legal to light up here in nevada -- if you're 21 or older. but unless you're a medical marijuana cardholder... there's no way to legally obtain pot. state senator tick segerblom nt ((st. sen. tick segerblom/(d) las vegas: "they allowed the existing medical dispensaries to sell recreational marijuana and as far as we could tell, there's no reason we couldn't do that in nevada.")) ((patrick walker)) the senator's staff is currently drafting a bill that would temporarily allow recreational sales at medical dispensaries. it would simply require dispensaries to charge the additional local and state taxes... somewhere between 15-20 percent... to non-medical cardholders. segerblom says time is criticial... because the state is missing out on revenue. oregon... for example... is collecting 4 million dollars a month. ((st. think, given our tourist economy, we could double that, so we're looking at close to $100 million in just taxes that we're losing.")) ((patrick walker)) colorado was the first state in the u-s to legalize recreational marijuana. they faced similar problems in the year-plus between voters legalizing pot... and recreational sales beginning. ((adam orens/founding partner, marijuana policy group: "you had a combination of not a lot of stores open, and record demand, it's a pretty simple supply-and-demand equation you had, that saw very, very high prices and the black market was still around.")) ((r started... the state's top regulator estimates legal sales cut sharply into illegal street transactions. ((andrew freedman/director of marijuana coordination, state of colorado: "there was roughly a billion dollars inside the licensed market (in sales), and so logic would tell us that's a billion dollars taken out of black market sales.")) ((dave courvoisier)) >> other steps include banning immigration authorites from southern nevada school campuses... providing policies to ensure no changes are made to title ix... and offering counseling to students in need./// ((christianne klein)) city leaders in oakland are doing everything they can to keep the raiders in california... ... and out of vegas. their latest effort, straight ahead./// ((dave courvoisier)) and the death toll rises... as mother nature unleashes a southeast. a look at some of the destruction left by wildfires and tornados, next on 8 news now at 5, the valley's news leader./// this is 8 news now at five.")) the largest wildfires to hit tennessee in a century are now to blame for at least seven deaths... the destruction of hundreds of homes and buildings... and dozens of injuries. the flames forced the evacuation of more than 14-thousand people from the great smoky mountains tourist city of gatlinburg. more than 400 emergency workers from multiple departments are working on extinguishing the flames and clearing debris -- many of them at it since monday night. there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnell... in the form of rain that's expected to fall throughout the night in the area.// meanwhile, folks in other parts of tennessee and alabama are dealing with a natural disaster of their own. severe weather that struck early this morning has claimed the lives of at least five people there. dozens more have been hospitalized. officials say a tornado ripped through the town of rosalie, alabama early this morning. the tornado was to blame for three of the deaths... and the destruction of power lines and mobile homes -- everything in its path of nearly a mile and a half. two people also were killed by severe weather in tennessee... just southeast of where those here in the valley: our first freeze warning of the season overnight. ((christianne klein)) >> but that hasn't stopped city officials and boosters from trying to put together a deal to keep the nfl franchise in california. sports director chris maathuis joins us with more on the push to keep the raiders in oakland. ((chris maathuis)) city and county leaders are looking for a the latest efforts to finance a stadium in oakland were discussed behind closed doors on tuesday. they feel they have the funds to convince the raiders to stay in his investement group met with city and county leaders it was revealed that lott's group will come up with 5-to-6 hundred million... the city will contribute 200 million, but not toward construction of a stadium but in upgrading the infrastruture and apparently the nfl would pitch in 200 million. one key requirement in this plan is city leaders don't want any public money to be used... everybody involved in oakland is saying this sends a message to the nfl. (( )) noel gallo/city council:' "long overe 10years - we are finally there ...." " so what' does finally there .....really mean ???? "do you have a good feeling ? good hope ? absolutely -- i'm ready to vote for it and move on " gregory jones/forevber oakland; ""all arrows are pointing toward oakland the way the nfl wants a deal done here ... they have high respect for ronnie lotts investment team . ((chris maathuis)) even if the money is there... a few more issues facing oakland leaders and fundraisers... out.. and the city is still paying off a 95 million dollar price tag to the exsisting stadium for luring the raiders away from l-a in the 90's ((chris maathuis)) those efforts in oakland might be falling on deaf ears... las vegas already has the money committed and owner mark davis has made it clear he wants to move his team to las vegas. the las vegas stadium authority board is holding its first meeting on monday over on the unlv campus. the city leaders in oakland are meeting on december 7th.
