(( )) ((christianne klein)) >> since june this neighborhood has been rocked by several planned explosions as part of an expansion of highland hills.. dozens of residents say their homes have been damaged by the blasts.. from foundations, retaining walls to ceilings, even cracks through stone.. including richard travis' granite counters.. (( richard travis/resident two of them have cracks and the one blast that went off today widened the one crack a lot more : )) (( howard mccarley/resident we were assured throughout all of this that the county would be i to existing houses : did that happen? absolutely not : this is the first time we've seen anybody from the county out there when they're getting ready to do a blast : )) ((christianne klein)) >> several residents have hired a local attorney because of the damage they say they suffered.. and there's another issue that concerns some neighbors.. the third party company monitoring the blasting.. called v-c-e.. (( howard mccarley/resident on the vce website they say their specialty is protecting blasters from damage claims : )) ((christianne klein)) on its homepage it claims to allow those who use its services to defend unwarranted lawsuits with blast damage control, construction documentation, analysis and public relations services. and that its legal video department provides the tools for persuasive legal argument. richard travis says he reached out to wesco, the company doing the blasting... and then received a letter from v-c-e.. (( richard travis/resident they basically told me it's all environmental.. i've lived here for 13 years.. born and raised in las vegas livedin several houses.. never had any kind or in ceilings due to settling )) (( howard mccarley/resident first thing that went through my mind is these are the guys who are supposed to be monitoring the amount of shock that is generated by the blast and the question is whether they're monitoring in my interest or the interest of the blaster.. what do you think? i think it's fairly obvious .. we've had 30 homes that have experiecned some pretty significant damage and the answer we've got from vce is it's all related to climactic ((christianne klein)) >> i reached out to clark county officials.. they told me today's blast measured .2 inches per second which is below the limit. , i also reached out to commissioner susan brager, wesco officials who did not want to comment, and vce. vce has not returned my phone calls. we'll continue to monitor this ongoing situation and bring you any new details as it develops. ((denise valdez)) one person has died as a downtown las vegas-- and while fire crews say the blaze was accidental -- investigators say he should have never been living there in the first place. karen castro has been at the scene all day... and joins us now with what she's learned. ((karen castro)) the electrical fire started in a converted storage room in the backyard. extension cords. the flames we're contained to the small living space thanks for a neighbor's quick response. ((karen castro)) as the residents inside the home woke up and combed through the rubble... no one noticed the man was trapped inside. ((karen castro)) las vegas fire and rescue say the room did not have smoke alarms but luckily the neighbors noticed the fire before it claimed more lives.
