((dave courvoisier)) >> a valley neighborhood is fighting against noise, dust, and what they call an alarming smell from an asphalt plant and gravel pit right across the street from their homes. tonight, they're voicing concerns that it could get even worse. mauricio marin is live from the wells cargo site to explain a proposed expansion. mauricio? >> this asphalt plant and gravel pit that wells cargo operates has been here since the 1960's. neighbors say they were told it would be shutting down at the time they bought their homes. well that doesn't appear to be the case. in fact---the company is working to get county permission to create a bigger silo for more work in the area. and residents say what's already here is creating an air quality nightmare. just a few hundred feet away from the wells cargo asphalt plant. he says the dust created by the plant is problematic. ((steve williamson/resident: "you can see the trucks as they go by. they carry a plume of dust right down the road with them. it's terrible." )) ((mauricio marin)) clark county commissioner susan brager held a meeting thursday night to hear from constituents about the issue. and has looked at the plan wells cargo has put forth to the county. (( susan brager/clark county commissioner: "they are asking to be expanded. they are already on the other side of the street they just are asking tx things they've already been doing and would continue to do.")) ((mauricio marin)) the biggest part of the expansion that worries neighbors is an 87 foot structure of silos and conveyors. williamson says he calls the county air quality department when the dust becomes too much for him....but it can take some time for authorities to check out the problem. ((steve williamson/resident: "you get a plume coming out of the pits. it'll linger for a while then go away. if they come out in two hours they're not going to see a thing." )) ((mauricio marin)) (( susan brager/clark county commissioner: "i don't make any decisions before i get on the first floor of the government building because i think that somebody might bring up something that i might not have heard." )) ((mauricio marin)) williamson hopes the commission rejects the expansion. ((mauricio marin)) >> wells cargo issued a statement about the location that has been operating since 1963...in part saying...
